BOWE LOOKING FORWARD TO MSG DEBUT

Saturday 29 June 2002

Brooklyn's Riddick Bowe has spoken today of his excitement over his upcoming Madison Square Garden professional debut on the 8th of July.

"Fought there a few times as an amateur," said Bowe from his Brooklyn training headquarters. "But this'll be somethin' entirely different. I can't wait. Fightin' at the home of our federation in the main event ... it doesn't get any better than that."

The #5 seed in the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's World Championship tournament has scored 3rd round KO victories in his last two bouts and revealed that he's eager to extend that streak when he steps into the ring against England's Joe Bugner.

"Would be kinda cool to score three third round KOs in a row," said Bowe, smiling. "If the opportunity comes up, I won't miss it. But I'll have to give Bugner a lot of respect. The dude has some serious power and even though he's struggled in some of his fights, I'll have to be on my guard."

Victory against Bugner will secure Bowe (5-0-0(3)) a birth in the second stage of the World Championship tournament, although that's something that, by his own admission, he's almost taken for granted.

"Knowing the talent I have, I'd have to be pretty unsure of myself to be even questioning whether or not I'll progress," Bowe said. "I mean, come on! Ain't a single guy amongst the top seeds who should be worried about that."

He paused, then added with a laugh, "Except maybe Jack Sharkey, I guess. That dude's in serious trouble. All kiddin' aside though, why would I question that? Getting to the second stage is just, you know ... it's only the beginning. No offense to some of the guys in the tourney, but I don't really see it starting until stage two. All this stuff happenin' now, that's just an appetiser, man."

It's true that Riddick Bowe and all of the top seeds in the World Championship tournament are expected to - and really should - progress to the tournament's second stage. Whether they should be displaying the type of confidence that Bowe has is another thing, entirely. Like the man said, he'll have to be on his guard come July 8...

Looks like a solid series of fightcards but I care most about the last two. A pair of great main events as well as a good Elmer Ray scrap so make for a fun couple evenings of boxing action.

I'm really looking forward to bringing them all to everyone. These cards will be the first to really feature fights between guys who have a good chance of making stage two. Personally, I'm really looking forward to Langford/Sharkey, Young/Patterson and Tunney/Shavers. I also have this strange feeling about the Ray vs Mann fight. Don't know why, but I'm thinking it won't be as easy for Elmer as it appears. I think that me thinking this shows how absorbed I am by the game.

VINCENNES JETS INTO VEGAS
FOR MANDALAY BAY FIGHT CARD

Sunday 30 June 2002

Heavyweight Boxing Federation president Michael Vincennes has flown into Las Vegas this afternoon in advance of tomorrow night's HBF fight card at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

"It's nice to be back," said Vincennes, who surprisingly hasn't paid a visit to "Sin City" since a federation fight card involving Gene Tunney back on January 12. "I'm really hoping we can put a good show on for everyone."

Tomorrow's fight card is the first in the vitally important series six of the federation's World Championship and 1st Defense tournaments with the main event featuring California's Sam McVey and Michigan native Tony Tucker in a bout with huge significance.

"They all know the implications of tomorrow," said Vincennes. "It's amazing what a difference each result will make for each man's chances of progressing. I'm excited to see what happens."

The situation in Group Eight of the World Championship tournament is far from resolved and as Vincennes said, it is amazing what a difference each possible result will make. If McVey improves to 6-0 by defeating Tucker, he'll clinch top spot in the group along with passage to the tournament's second stage. This result, coupled with a victory for Zora Folley over South Africa's Johnny Arthur in the Co-Feature, would have Tucker and Folley fighting for second place when they clash in series seven.

Swap around the results and things get very interesting. Victories for Tucker and Arthur would have the group standings looking like this going into the seventh and final series of stage one:

Tucker 5-1
McVey 5-1
Arthur 4-0-2

It would make the final bout of series seven between McVey and Arthur a fascinating one, where it would be win or miss out entirely. McVey has been quoted in recent days as saying he feels confident that he'll be able to defeat Tucker, despite the Michigan native's seven inch height advantage.

"I don't think that'll come into it," said McVey. "What he has to look out for is my workrate and my aggression. I don't think he'll be able to handle either of them."

Without a doubt, tomorrow night's event is shaping up to be an exciting one and the results will go a long way towards determining who will and won't progress to stage two of the World Championship tournament...

FIRST PAST THE POST:
MCVEY DEFEATS TUCKER TO
QUALIFY FOR SECOND STAGE

Monday 1 July 2002

California's Sam McVey has become the first fighter to qualify for the second stage of the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's World Championship tournament after scoring a six round unanimous decision victory over Tony Tucker tonight at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Although he tasted the canvas for the first time in his professional career, McVey was too busy and too aggressive for his Michigan-born opponent and took the verdict by scores of 57-56, 59-55 and 57-56. It was a fight that didn't quite live up to expectations, with Tucker unable to make the most of a seven inch height and reach advantage and paying the price for an inability to execute at key moments.

In an entrance straight out of Hollywood, McVey had made his way to the ring accompanied by what has become a considerable entourage, his girlfriend Claudette James leading the procession in an eye-popping, curve-enhancing dress that left little to the imagination. Amongst McVey's group were fellow Californian boxers Ken Norton, James Toney and Roberto Garcia and, to the surprise of everyone in the house, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Shaquille O'Neal. The laid back, west coast hip hop classic "The Formula" by The D.O.C. reverberated through the arena speakers.

In the minutes before their arrival, the chant of "USC! USC! USC!" was strong amongst parts of the crowd supporting McVey. It's the term that he had bestowed upon his clique during an interview earlier in the week.

"We've got the Florida Alliance, so what should we call you guys?" the interviewer had asked.

McVey had responded with, "Well, we're just a bunch of united south Cali brothers, so I guess you could call us USC."

(continuation)

As he has done in his last two bouts, McVey showed his love for his hometown Los Angeles Lakers with a robe of gold with purple and white trim along with similar trunks and purple boots.

It was quite a sight to see Tony Tucker towering seven inches taller and intensely staring down at McVey in the moments before the bell, sweat bubbled across his forehead. McVey took it all in stride, though, smiling and talking to the Michigan native, looking like a ball of contained energy ready to explode. A wave of excitement passed over the crowd as the first of what will be a month of huge fights for the HBF finally got underway.

Tucker actually had the better of round one, but not by much. He used his jab to keep McVey at bay but didn't show a lot of aggression. The Californian was sizing him up, giving him a lot of feints and coming at Tucker, who was perfectly happy to backpedal behing that stiff left. Things changed rather quickly in the second as McVey was able to get inside and score with a number of powerful shots to the body and head, proving that his strength has improved in the time since his January debut. His head movement was frustrating Tucker, leading to him missing with many of the defensive jabs he offered.

The third was very much like the opener, although in this case McVey had more success. It looked quite apparent that Tucker's gameplan wasn't working particularly well, as McVey kept coming at him, his impressive ability to slip inside and outside of Tucker's shots bringing appreciative applause from the audience. McVey returned to his corner with a confident grin, but it would be temporarily removed when he found himself down on one knee midway through the fourth round, a stinging Tucker bodyshot putting him there. In a comical scene, McVey showed a fake pained expression, rubbing his side before looking at Tucker, smiling, and pushing himself to his feet at the count of eight. Tucker should have been all over him but failed to follow up, going back into his shell behind that left jab.

The Michigan native's opportunity had well and truly vanished when, during the fifth round, McVey illustrated who was in control in emphatic style. According to punch stats, he landed 38 of the 74 punches he threw in the round, with Tucker failing to land a single shot of his own. The crowd was on their feet as McVey ripped into his tiring opponent, lefts and rights jolting the bigger man, colliding violently with his ribcage and sending sweat flying as if coming from a slingshot. The "USC!" chant started up again in force and as McVey returned to his corner at the end of the round, he pumped his fist and implored the crowd to make it louder, a spring in his step.

Tucker showed more aggression in the sixth than in any other round of the fight, but McVey was just as willing and his resolute frame of mind drove him to a superior effort. The crowd came to their feet in appreciation as the final seconds ticked away, clearly more in admiration for McVey's impressive showing than Tucker's cautious one. Even so, the scorecards indicated that the fight was level on two of them going into the final round. If Tucker had been able to dig deeper in even one of the earlier rounds or in the last round, he might have been able to steal a victory.

The punch counts seemed to indicate a dominant McVey win, although much of the discrepancy came about because of the Californian's efforts in rounds two and five:

McVey 135/312 (43.3%)
Tucker 77/290 (26.6%)

At first engulfed by his entourage, McVey was eventually interviewed after the verdict.

"I feel like he wasn't aggressive enough," he said, wiping his face with a towel. "His strategy really relied heavily on the jab and once I solved that he didn't have anything to fall back on. That surprised me a lot. It turned out just like I said, though. He couldn't handle my aggression or my workrate."

ESPN's Bill Farris mentioned the the scorecards and how close McVey actually was to a defeat.

"Well, that can happen when you throw a knockdown into the mix," he said. "He caught me with a good bodyshot, took my breath away for a few seconds. But even after that, he couldn't consolidate. Couldn't put me back on my heels."

Farris asked what McVey's attitude would be for his series seven bout against Johnny Arthur, now that he'd secured a stage two birth.

"Won't be any different at all," McVey answered. "The result might not matter as far as whether I progress or not, but that don't mean I ain't gonna give 100%. I'm proud that I've made it to 6-0 and I intend to get to 7-0."

Soon after, McVey and the rest of "USC" had departed the ring, carried back to the dressing room by that same chant resounding through the Mandalay Bay arena...

***

In the evening's Co-Feature, Arizona's Zora Folley kept his chances of progressing to the second stage of the tournament alive with a 2nd round TKO of South Africa's Johnny Arthur. To the disappointment of the audience, the fight ended abruptly just nineteen seconds into the round after Folley caught his opponent with a booming right hand that staggered Arthur and opened a sickening, deep cut below his left eye. It didn't take long for both referee Dick Young and the ringside doctor to wave off the contest, awarding a TKO victory to Folley.

Having been himself TKO'd in round two by Sam McVey in his last bout, Folley was glad to see the tables turned but he tempered his celebrations somewhat, aware of his distraught South African opponent on the other side of the ring.

"It's good to win again," said Folley, whose last victory came against Lem Franklin back on the 11th of February. "But I feel for Johnny. This was a huge fight for both of us and it has to be tough to lose it like this."

Round one had been an even affair with both men showing a willingness to stand and trade shots, much to the audience's delight. It made the sudden ending all the more disappointing.

Even though Arthur and Folley both share the same 3-1-2 record, Folley is now in the box seat due to this win and the fact that he fights Tony Tucker in series seven. A look at the group standings shows that the only way Arthur can progress to stage two is if the Tucker/Folley bout ends in a draw and the South African then defeats top seed Sam McVey when he fights him in the main event that will follow. It goes without saying that the odds of that happening are very long...

1st: Sam McVey 6-0-0(1)
2nd: Tony Tucker 4-2-0(1)

3rd: Zora Folley 3-1-2(1)
4th: Johnny Arthur 3-1-2

(Coming up: The Mandalay Bay undercard)

Good wins for McVey and Folley, both had to have been favored but still it's good that they took care of business. So who do you favor to win the Tucker/Folley match next round KC.

It's a very tough one to pick, although I think it would be cool if Zora won it. He got robbed in one of his early fights which was scored as a draw and then got blitzed by McVey. For him to overcome that and progress to stage two would be a great story.

If it happens, it would also make Tucker, having missed out after winning his first four bouts, really determined to redeem himself in the American tournament. It still amazes me how close he was to defeating Johnny Arthur, a win that would have secured both he and McVey's passage to stage two with still two series of bouts to go in stage one.

It's cruel for Johnny Arthur that by defeating Tucker he kept his own and Folley's chances of progressing alive and now Folley has beaten him to all but end Arthur's chances. That's what's so great about these types of tournaments: the consequences that certain results have...

THE MANDALAY BAY UNDERCARD

Australia's Frank Slavin and Venezuela's Jose Luis Garcia have almost certainly guaranteed that their series seven clash will decide who finishes in second place behind Rocky Marciano in Group One of the 1st Defense tournament.

Both men scored victories tonight to start the Mandalay Bay event, with Garcia dominating the winless 64th and last seed in the tournament Oscar Pharo before Slavin found more resistance than expected from the winless Mike Schreck.

Garcia floored Pharo in round four on the way to a comfortable 59-54, 58-55, 59-54 unanimous decision win, improving his record to 4-2(1). The Venezuelan said afterwards that it was a nice change to be in a bout where he felt in total control.

Slavin achieved his third consecutive victory but not before knocking Schreck out fourteen seconds from the final bell. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Schreck has been one of the worst fighters in the entire HBF while accumulating an 0-5 record, being KO'd four times inside of three rounds along the way. But against Slavin he finally showed some fight and was actually leading 48-47 on all three cards after round five. But Slavin knocked him down twice in the final stanza, Schreck failing to beat the count on the second occasion. Slavin is now an impressive 5-1(2), not bad for a guy seeded #48 in a 64-man tournament.

"He really made me work for it," said the amiable Aussie. "Showed a lot more than I expected him to. It was a nice workout but it's great to get another win."

Slavin and Garcia are sitting in 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the group, with Tony Galento and Scott LeDoux right behind them at 3-2. However, Galento's chances of progressing will be extinguished unless he can pull off what would be the biggest upset in the HBF's short history against "The Brockton Blockbuster" Rocky Marciano on Wednesday night in London. LeDoux faces a much easier examination against Stan Ward, but even if he wins that fight he'll be in the exact same situation as Galento in five weeks time when he steps in the ring against Marciano.

***

The World Championship tournament's 121st seed Arturo Godoy recorded his first professional victory against Texas native Johnny Boudreaux in a fight that fluctuated between mediocrity and excitement. The Chilean took a 58-53, 57-54, 58-53 unanimous decision, sending Boudreaux to the canvas in the 2nd, 5th and 6th rounds.

Texas-born Boudreaux showed glimpses of promise, especially in rounds one and three. But those late knockdowns spelled the end of any chance he had of winning the bout. Godoy is now 1-3-2 while Boudreaux is still looking for his first victory at 0-5-1.

Fighting in the evening's fourth contest, Alabama's Lem Franklin pitched a shutout against Oakland native Roger Rischer. Franklin was awarded every round on all three judge's cards, putting Rischer on the canvas right on the bell to end round four and taking the verdict by scores of 60-53 (x3).

Franklin is a fellow who has shown guts and determination in each of his contests and this victory against Rischer was his second in a row after he lost all of his first four bouts by unanimous decision.

Rischer (1-4-1) was never in it, Franklin simply outworking, outhustling and outmuscling him throughout. Franklin will fight Godoy to complete his stay in the World Championship tournament and will certainly gain himself a birth in the upcoming Continental Americas Championship tournament if he can secure a third consecutive victory.

VINCENNES HAS PLENTY TO SAY

Prior to the commencement of tonight's event, HBF President Michael Vincennes was interviewed by ESPN's panelists and spoke on a number of subjects, including:

* Plans for African and Asia/Oceania Championship tournaments

"I've been discussing it with my advisors recently and we feel it's important to get these underway sooner rather than later," said Vincennes. "It's something we have promised and something we are determined to follow through with. It's always been our goal to have regional champions in the four major territories of the world: the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. There aren't a huge amount of fighters from Asia and Africa competing in the World Championship and 1st Defense tournaments, so it will require us to hold future auditions. It's likely that these will be limited to South Africa, Nigeria, Australia and New Zealand for the purposes of these tournaments. I can envision them starting shortly after our other regional ones do, although their duration might not be as long."

* The format for the Junior-Heavyweight Championship tournament

"Yes, it's still two years away, but we've decided on an exciting format for it," said the federation president enthusiastically. "We'll be staging a 32-man tournament that will be different from our current Heavyweight World Championship tournament. It will involve eight groups of four fighters competing in a double-elimination stage. Two fighters from each group will qualify for the second stage which will be a 16-man single-elimination knockout stage. This means that the eventual winner will have fought six or seven fights to be crowned the Junior-Heavyweight Champion."

* The completion of the federation's recent Qualifying League auditions

"We are extremely happy with the outcome of the auditions," Vincennes said. "We've discovered some fantastically talented fighters, such as Romy Alvarez down in Florida, Mike Hanson in Indianapolis and Scott Mundt over in Germany, amongst a bunch of others. This Qualifying League tournament is going to be fiercely contested, I tell you. It's something that our current top flight competitors will have to keep an eye on also, because in a year or two some of these guys in the QL could be nipping at their heels."

Thanks, Lee. I'm hoping that Sammy Langford can stitch up a birth with a victory against Sharkey on the Wednesday night card. I've been imagining what it would be like to be there with a raucous, pro-Sharkey crowd along with a bunch of support for Alex Stewart earlier on the card. That will be a great atmosphere.

I have my favourites in this story and Langford is definitely one of them. I'd love to see him win the World Championship tournament and Marciano the 1D, setting up Langford vs Marciano...

You've just won the biggest tournament in history, have beaten some of the best fighters in the world and your reward for doing all this is having to face a man who is a better overall fighter and hits like a mule kick. Man, if the winner of the WC tournament beats Rocky in their first defense they deserve to face someone like Oscar Pharo in their second defense so they can relax abit.

I'm rooting for Patterson to take the tournament even through I know he has no real chance to do so.

No chance of that happening. There ain't gonna be no easy defenses in the HBF, at least while Vincennes is in charge. It's very likely that the next challenger will end up being one of the losing tournament semi-finalists or finalists. With the way I'll be scheduling the title bouts, the World Championship could change hands pretty often. Only the toughest, most determined of combatants will be able to stay on top which, of course, is how it should be.

Just to let you all know I'm gonna try and cut back a little on the extra stories so we can get through these next two series of fight cards a bit more quickly and get on to the second stage plus the start of the IBL tournaments. I'll probably do one big post at the end of each week which will serve as a preview of what's to come in the following week.
