(continuation of post #1498)

Cleroux addressed the crowd soon after, thanking them for their "tremendous support and encouragement".

"I don't think I could have achieved this without you," he said, to which the audience applauded wildly. "Those last three rounds were really tough and although I was dead tired, I just kept telling myself to stay on my feet. Lennox is a great fighter and, like I said before, I'm sad that one of us has to miss out on the final. But then again, even if we both got there one of us would have missed out on the World Ranking tourney. I'm really hoping that Lennox can show everyone what he's capable of in the QL."

Cleroux departed the ring five minutes later, briefly speaking to Lewis before doing so.

"It's a big disappointment for me, no doubt," said a downcast Lewis. "This is not the way I expected my time in this league to end. I look at the success that Sammy Langford, Chuvalo and Ruddock have had in the World Championship tournament and it frustrates me that I've failed to replicate that. I'm proud of representing Canada in our sport but this just isn't good enough. Losing to Ferguson was a setback and I should have been in the right frame of mind to avoid anything like that happening again. Clearly I wasn't, otherwise I would have won tonight. I'm an Olympic Champion and I know that many people expected more from me than this. I expected more from myself also, so I'll have to work hard to redeem myself. This sets me back, you know? It extends the time that it will take me to climb up the rankings and more than anything, that's the thing that hurts the most."

We'll have to wait for the results of Thursday's African Boxing League semi-finals to know exactly where Lewis will be placed in the Qualifying League. Based on the league's opening fight cards he faces the possibility of some stiff competiton.

***

In comparison to the Main Event, the evening's Co-Feature was free of drama as 4th-seeded New Brunswick native John Ferguson dominated New York's Bobby Halpern for six rounds to earn a unanimous decision victory (60-54, 58-56, 60-54) and a place in the tournament final.

Ferguson was a ball of activity and aggression, throwing exactly 500 punches during the contest (more than three times as many as his opponent) and landing 161 of them (32.2%). Halpern was never in the contest, connecting with 71 of 154 shots (46.1%). There were no knockdowns but Ferguson was in control throughout, tormenting Halpern with a potent left jab and some damaging combinations.

The 4th seed is now 5-1 and should not be underestimated going into the league's decider. Cleroux will be a warm favourite but he'd be a fool to assume victory. With his record being inferior to Ferguson's (4-0-2), he'll have to win the bout to be crowned the CBL's Champion. The tournament final is scheduled to take place on the 24th of September.

Can't wait for the ABL card on Thursday should be a hell of a card. I think Okocha should roll into the finals easily but Ibeabuchi/Eldren should be a doozy. I'll be rooting for Eldren to pull it off.

I'd make a crack about FSU but with ND looking at about 4-5 wins this season I'll just keep my mouth shut.

When I saw that the result was a draw, the first thing I thought of was how happy you'd be. As for the ABL, I'm hoping that Okocha takes out the whole thing. I want him to be one of the great success stories of the HBF and winning the ABL tourney will be a good start for him.

Hey, we won last Saturday so things are good on that front as well even though we did go kind of life and death with freaking UAB. Both of our teams are stuck in rebuilding mode at the moment though I must say I'm glad that we haven't sunk as low as you guys have. That GT game was brutal, I didn't get to watch the Penn State game, I don't think I've ever felt as sorry for football players as I did for the ND QBs on that day.

I want Okocha to take it as well but mainly for selfish reasons as I don't want him to end up the number 1 seed in the QL forcing Mike and myself to deal with him at this point.

The Molson Centre Undercard

OPENING BOUT

Cleveland's Deutron Shelby made quite an entrance to the world of the Heavyweight Boxing Federation when he auditioned back in June. He really stirred things up during the week of action at Detroit's Van Andel Arena, displaying an out of control ego but also showing that he's a more than capable fighter.

Since then the 25 year-old has been brought back to earth somewhat as his mother was involved in a serious car accident last month that led to her being hospitalised. Understandably, the incident hampered Shelby's preparations for his HBF debut but he declined the federation's offer of delaying his Qualifying League bout to a later time, assuring the organisation that he'd be ready to step into the ring on the scheduled date.

Shelby made his debut tonight in the Molson Centre opener, scoring a tough split decision victory over Russia's Yevgeny Semshov (57-56 56-57 59-55). It was an entertaining contest with the fireworks going off in the opening round, a fantastic three minutes that featured several punishing exchanges. Semshov finished it in a stronger fashion but Shelby wrestled the momentum away from him in round two before finding himself on the canvas early in round three from a booming right hand. The Ohio native climbed off the canvas at seven, survived the round and then dominated his tiring Russian opponent during the bottom half of the bout to secure a gutsy victory. Shelby landed 124 of 454 punches (27.3%), Semshov 95 of 232 (40.9%).

"This is for my momma," an emotional Shelby said in his rapid-fire speak. "She ain't been too well after the accident but I hope this bring a smile to her face, y'all."

Shelby was genuinely surprised by Semshov's efforts, praising his opponent's determination and toughness.

"Didn't know much about him, if anything," Shelby said. "But the dude came to fight, y'all. Put me on my ass with that right hand, gotta tell ya. He gonna give these other cats a hard time, jus' watch. I feel lucky to get out o' here with a win, man."

Considering the circumstances that he came into the fight under, Shelby must be commended for his efforts. Semshov surprised him but he might have surprised the federation, also. They saw something in him in Russia but it was less than what he displayed tonight. He'll certainly give his opponents a hard time whenever he steps between the ropes.

PRELIMINARY 1

Discovered at the federation's Los Angeles auditions, Mexican-born Arizona resident Luis Gomez found himself on the rough end of a bad decison in his pro boxing debut. Despite appearing to have the upperhand for most of the contest, his bout against the hometown crowd favourite Dwayne Peters (also on debut) was scored a 57-55, 55-57, 56-56 draw.

The hard-hitting Gomez started with a bang, tagging Peters with a trio of hard shots before dropping him late in round one with a crunching straight right. The action slowed in the 2nd, although Gomez came on strong in its closing stages. Peters threw down the gauntlet in round three, hurting Gomez early and late to take it convincingly, much to the audience's delight.

Peters appeared to be back in the fight but Gomez pitched a near shoutout in round four, crashing some powerful blows into the Canadian's ribcage in addition to some impressive headhunting. Peters brought the crowd to their feet when he had Gomez down on one knee after a stinging bodyshot early in the 5th. He controlled the rest of the round but despite this, Gomez was still in the boxseat.

Round six would be a vital one and, when the final scorecards were scrutinized, it was the one that cost Gomez a victory. The Mexican was in command through the first two minutes, hurting Peters with a left early and a hard right hand at the midpoint. But when Peters unleashed a right to the body a minute from the final bell the crowd reacted wildly, cheering for their man as Gomez looked unsteady on his feet. Peters was unable to follow up but that one punch and the audience's reaction almost surely swayed judges Masakazu Uchida and Malcolm Bulner as they both scored the round in the Canadian's favour, 10-9.

Gomez could only shake his head in disbelief when the verdict was revealed, a look of disdain blanketing his countenance. He landed 115 of 479 punches (24.0%), Peters 79 of 237 (33.3%).

"What the hell can I say about it?!?" exclaimed an incredulous Gomez. "You want me to say I got robbed? I ain't need to say that because it's obvious. This fu-, this damn crowd really got into those judge's ears, no doubt. I ain't gonna blame myself 'cause I did enough to win."

Still steamed, the Mexican left the ring soon after, getting in a shouting match with a few in the audience as he made his way up the aisle. The crowd reacted much more favourably to Peters when he departed the ring and he didn't hesitate to acknowledge their applause.

Clearly, this result will hurt Gomez more than Peters but hopefully he'll make it a non-factor as the Qualifying League tournament progresses.

Damn, it sucks that Gomez got boned by the judges. If only he had stayed on his feet in round 5 he would have taken the fight.

PRELIMINARY 2

Extroverted New Yorker Marco Santino was a ball of excited energy as he prowled the ring in the moments before his debut bout against Lithuania's Leonidas Jaskucionis. The 27 year-old was decked out in a silk robe of white with blue trim, a smile from ear-to-ear.

Santino had spoken in the last few days of how much he'd been looking forward to his debut and as it turned out, he made it a victorious one. The Catskill native floored Jaskucionis three times on the way to a 6th round TKO victory, referee Billy Cavanagh stopping the contest 47 seconds from the final bell with the Lithuanian helpless on the ropes. Santino has a wide circle of friends and many of them travelled up to Montreal from New York for the event, making their presence known amongst the audience.

After showing a cautious nature in the opening round, Santino went on to control the rest of the fight. He dominated in rounds two and three, landing a number of flush shots and keeping his opponent on the back foot before Jaskucionis showed some welcomed resolve in the 4th. Santino scored his first career knockdowns in the 5th, flooring his man with a crushing right just after the two minute mark and then putting him down with a body shot shortly before the bell. Jaskucionis looked ready to go as he came out for the final round and he showed little to dispute that, Santino picking him off at will before a punishing combination had him on his backside with a minute to go in the fight. The Lithuanian just managed to beat the count but after Santino planted a right hand right on his nose Cavanagh had seen enough and waved the contest over.

"Feeling a lot of relief right now," said Santino. "I built this moment up in my head so much and it was everything I hoped for. Felt like I was in a war, with the adrenalin just flowin' like crazy. Leo really made it tough for me and I have to congratulate him for that."

Santino landed exactly 50% of his punches (211 of 422) while Jaskucionis connected with 108 of 377 (28.6%).

"Wanna say what's up to my buddy Jonesy over there in Nigeria," continued Santino. "You know, we been trainin' together for the last few months and I can't thank him enough for how much he's helped me. I'll be cheerin' for you on Thursday, brother."

Santino received a warm round of applause from the crowd as he made his way back to the dressing rooms, that smile still showing from ear-to-ear.

PRELIMINARY 3

The evening's fourth contest featured a Virginia native with ambition and self-belief to burn. 20 year-old Steve Finley had greatly impressed federation scouts during June's Madison Square Garden auditions, showing himself to be a balanced fighter. Possessing both a potent jab and KO power, Finley was picked out as one of the top prosepcts to come out of the auditions, a tenacious young man with a hunger to succeed.

So how did he perform in his debut? Well, after the Santino fight was over many in the crowd made for the concession stands, bars and restrooms, the organisers providing something of an extended intermission. Before all these crowd members had returned to their seats Finley had already been declared a victor, knocking out his Slovenian opponent Drago Bencek with a single right cross 1:54 into round one.

It was as perfect and as flush a punch as you're likely to see, snapping Bencek's head around on his shoulders and putting him to sleep on contact. The Slovenian fell face first to the canvas and did not move for the duration of the count, the 20 year-old Virginian showing his exuberance by doing a back flip on the other side of the ring once the fight was over.

"Didn't expect it to end like that at all," said Finley, breathing heavily in his excitement. "But I saw an opportunity and pounced on it. Felt just like how it does when you hit a fastball right in the middle of the bat, you know? I landed that punch right on the button and I knew he was gone right away."

Bencek had accumulated a 2-3 record during his time in the Southern Europe Boxing League and had defeated the Italian Nini Perroni in his last bout, but he didn't even land a punch against Finley. No doubt he'll be hoping for a different result in his next fight.

As for Finley, what a great start for him. He'll certainly be one to keep an eye on as the Qualifying League tournament progresses.

Man with out a doubt Claybor has had the best debut of any of us so far. It's going to be hard to beat a first round KO.

Congrats on the win, Claybor. It's great that your guy was able to put his opponent away so early. Like Romy said, that debut will be tough to top.

Sorry about the inactivity the past few days. Like I said in the OT thread, I'm on holiday and I was up the coast at my sister's place from Sunday to Tuesday. Should be able to get quite a bit done in the HBF/IBL during the next three or four days.

PRELIMINARY 4

Having ended his time in the South-East Asian Boxing League with a brave showing against Florida Alliance member Terone Haynes and then a strong win against Samoa's Kalolo Umaga, Kansas native Fred Fulton maintained his good form with a 4th round TKO of Norway's Olaf Heiberg.

For the main, Heiberg had enjoyed a successful campaign in the Northern Europe Boxing League, winning three of his first four bouts before being KO'd in the 1st round by the Irishman Artuir Claffey with a spot in the semi-finals on the line. Heiberg was never in the contest against Fulton, the American proving far too aggressive for him.

Fulton swept the opening three rounds on two judge's cards, despite the Norwegian's efforts. Round three was action-packed and a pretty even affair until Fulton landed a pair of flush right hands late in the piece. Heiberg tasted the canvas midway through the 4th when a perfectly-timed right cross landed flush on his cheek bone, putting him on his backside. Up at eight, he looked unsteady and Fulton poured on the pressure. After a booming uppercut and another smashing cross referee Ken Morita had seen enough and waved the contest over at the 2:35 mark.

The win improved Fulton's record to 3-2-1(1) and indicated that he'll be one to be weary of in the Qualifying League. Heiberg's second consecutive loss saw his record drop to 3-3(1).

SUPPORT BOUT

Cuba's Omelio Agramonte fell to his third consecutive unanimous decision defeat, his conqueror Greg Williams seemingly going in the opposite direction with his second straight victory and third in four bouts.

The 20 year-old New Yorker was the winner by verdicts of 58-56, 59-55 and 58-56 against an opponent who, with the exception of rounds four and five, looked uninspired and uninterested. Agramonte had gone undefeated in his first three career bouts but has not tasted victory since scoring a 5th round KO of Jack Carroll back in April. His record is now 2-3-1(2).

Williams only just missed out on claiming a semi-final spot in the Pacific Coast Boxing League and based on tonight's performance, his chances of going one step better in the Qualifying League look pretty good. Standing 5'10" and weighing in at 185 pounds, he is by no means one of the bigger competitors in the federation but after six pro bouts he sports an impressive 4-2(2) record.

MORE BAD NEWS FOR THE FLORIDA ALLIANCE

Wednesday 21 August 2002

During the past fortnight the fortunes of the Heavyweight Boxing Federation entourage known as "The Florida Alliance" have taken a pair of debilitating body blows. Starting with Elmer Ray's capitulation and defeat at the hands of Floyd Patterson back on the 9th and followed by Tommy Gomez's controversial draw against Canada's George Chuvalo last Wednesday, it's certainly been a period they'd rather forget. Both results had the devastating consequence of denying berths in stage two of the World Championship tournament for Ray and Gomez.

Tonight things went from bad to worse for the Alliance as Fort Lauderdale's Oliver McCall fell to his first professional defeat, surprisingly going down by unanimous decision to Oklahoma's Tommy Morrison. Competing in the Co-Feature of the federation's Caesar's Palace fight card, the 1st Defense tournament's #3 seed was unable to overcome a woeful opening two rounds and despite fighting back strongly in the bout's middle section McCall lost by scores of 58-56 on all three judge's cards.

The upset victory has seen Morrison complete an admirable run through stage one and achieve a 1st place finish in the Group Three standings. The tournament's 30th seed has defied the experts, finishing the stage with an impressive 6-1(1) record. It also means that he'll be placed in Group Two in stage two, therefore avoiding a meeting with top seed Rocky Marciano until at least the tournament semi-finals. Things are not as positive for McCall. His 2nd placed finish puts him in Group One as one of the bottom four seeds, setting up a clash with Marciano in series four. In addition, it sees four of the tournament's top five overall seeds now confirmed for Group One (the others being Marciano (#1), the Jamaican Trevor Berbick (#4) and Cuba's Nino Valdes (#5)).

Despite the unanimous decision result, this was a fantastically-competitive fight from rounds three through to five. However, as stated earlier, McCall came out of the gates terribly. He had looked determined and almost ready to explode when he climbed through the ropes, all six of his fellow Florida Alliance members flanking him. But he went into a shell after eating a couple of hard rights from Morrison early in the 1st. The Oklahoma native was able to consolidate on that good start in brilliant fashion and he outlanded McCall by an outstanding 61-6 through those first two rounds. But McCall came back strongly in the 3rd, although Morrison was even better. All three judges awarded him the round and he swept the cards through the opening half of the bout. The hard hits continued to land in round four and on into the fifth, both rounds featuring some thrilling exchanges that had the crowd on their feet. When the fighters returned to their corners after round five they were given a standing ovation. McCall landed 93 punches in those three rounds, Morrison 78.

The last round would be vital and it was here where McCall came up short in big time fashion. Having worked his way back into the contest "The Atomic Bull" was himself bullied in the final stanza, a powerful Morrison combination early in the round setting the tone for the entire three minutes. A hard right to the head a minute in had McCall on the back foot and it was soon evident that the punch had opened a cut over his left eye. Working the body just as effectively, Morrison then scored with a crushing uppercut as the fight entered its final minute. McCall looked a beaten man as he moved in, exhausted arms held low allowing Morrison to land shots at will. The Oklahoma native put an exclamation point on his efforts, a right hook snapping McCall's head around a moment before the bell sounded. The blonde-haired 20 year-old pumped his right fist in the air, nodding his head in acknowledgement of the audience's applause. In that final round he landed a fantastic 43 shots, McCall just six.

"I guess I just wanted it more," said a smiling Morrison afterwards. "You know, I worked my ass off for this and I'm so happy that it paid off."

Indeed, Morrison had weighed in at a ripped, muscular 211 pounds for the fight, the lightest he'd been in any of his tournament bouts. He looked quicker with his punches and with his speed around the ring, assets that added up to a difficult night for the fancied McCall.

"All credit to Tommy," acknowledged McCall. "I came in tonight with a lot o' confidence but he was jus' a lot sharper, lot more aggressive and more determined. Like the dude said, he wanted it more. I tried to get back into it but, you know, he got me with some good, hard shots. Put me on the back foot. He gonna do some damage in stage two, no doubt about that."

The overall punch totals for the fight were:

McCall: 105/299 (35.1%)
Morrison: 182/338 (53.8%)

Following McCall's loss, Terone Haynes is the only one of the original four members of the Florida Alliance to remain undefeated. Having suffered through a terrible month of May (when they were a combined 1-2-1) they have gone 2-2-1 in August. Both wins were achieved outside of the World Championship and 1st Defense tournaments, with Haynes victorious in the South-East Asian Boxing League semi-finals and Romy Alvarez in the Qualifying League. The group's newest member Ariel Reyes is scheduled to make his debut in the QL on the 27th.

Bah, that sucks. Man when the Alliance has a bad month they have a bad month. We'll bounce back in the coming matches, hopefully Reyes can start by picking up the win in his debut.

Gomez, Ray and McCall went winless in the biggest fights of their careers to date. That's most unclutch...

In the evening's Main Event Los Angeles native Clarence Henry qualified for stage two of the World Championship tournament when he upset 22nd seed Johnny Summerlin via razor-thin unanimous decision (57-56 on all three cards). Summerlin found himself on the canvas for the third time in his career late in an action-packed opening round, a stinging body shot dropping him to one knee. The knockdown would prove to be vital to the contest's outcome as, after a non-descript 2nd, Summerlin was able to gain the upperhand in round three and keep it through until the end of the 5th. He appeared to be in control and on the verge of securing a stage two spot but Henry stole it from him with a dominant showing in the final stanza.

Over the course of the fight Summerlin had landed fifty more punches (150/312 to 100/258) but it mattered little. Henry was the victor and with his record now 4-3(2), he has become the first fighter with three losses to qualify for stage two in either the WC or 1D tournaments. Summerlin could only shake his head in bewilderment afterwards, unable to come to terms with the fact that he had missed out on progressing. The Detroit-born 28 year-old will have to be content with a start in the Continental Americas tournament, something he surely would not have been considering coming into the evening.

Henry will join 11th seed Joe Jeannette in stage two. Having already clinched his own berth after defeating Henry back in June, Jeannette scored a unanimous decision victory over Billy Daniels (58-57, 59-56, 58-57) to complete stage one with a perfect 7-0(2) record. It was an unusual bout as Jeannette was on fire and dominant in rounds one, four and six but lacked aggression and looked almost uninterested otherwise, making the fight closer than it really should have been. Jeannette landed 133 of 425 punches (31.3%), Daniels 96 of 205 (46.8%).

"Not my best night," said Jeannette, shaking his head. "But we got through it without any damage so I'll take that. Ain't afraid to admit I was strugglin' for motivation at times, which is something I'll have to avoid from now on."

The leader of "Jersey Pride" has guaranteed himself at least the #2 seeding in Group Two of stage two and would rise to #1 in the unlikely event of Sonny Liston losing to Lou Nova next week.

"Everything's gone to plan," added Jeannette. "We're through stage one without a blemish and now the goal is to finish 1st in stage two. I can't wait to get started on it."

The Caesar's Palace Undercard

OPENING BOUT

Syracuse native Mike DeJohn completed his time in the World Championship tournament with a second consecutive victory, defeating a listless Ron Stander by unanimous decision (59-54, 58-55, 59-55). DeJohn held the upperhand for most of the contest, with Stander only showing glimpses of promise. The Nebraska fighter was knocked down for the first time in his career with a minute remaining in the fight, a sizzling right cross putting him on his backside.

DeJohn is now 2-5 while Stander fell to 2-4-1, the loss his fourth in five fights.

PRELIMINARY 1

In control during the first two rounds, San Francisco's Charles Horn suffered a nasty cut over his left eye midway through round three of his bout against fellow 'Cisco native Al Kaufmann. The bout was sto
