MANCINI SUES GBA
AP - Lightweight boxer Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini has sentsationally filed a $5m. lawsuit against boxing commission, the GBA. It is claimed the GBA only paid him a fraction of his purse for his fight against Roberto Duran.

The Youngstown, Ohio native had the following to say. "I'm not happy about the situation, but my management told me this is the only way to go. This needs to be sorted out first before I fight again. I want to fight, because I'm a fighter, it's my job, but I want to be paid for doing that job."

GBA President Ian 'Iggy' Lord is also unhappy about the events. "He should have came straight to me first if he had a problem, and we could have sorted it out. I understand that it's probably the people behind him that have decided to take this route, but even so, I'm sure we could have sorted it out without having to go through the courts."

When asked to comment on the allegations, Lord had the following to say. "I don't want to say anything at this moment in time, although to be honest with you I don't actually deal with the payment side of things, my brother Rob sorts all of that out, and I trust him implicitly."

However, many feel that that trust is misplaced, as Rob Lord has a shady past. He first made his money through illegal gambling before going legit and opening a string of casino's. He then went into the wrestling business, forming the now defunct East Coast Wrestling Alliance. A success at first, it suddenly folded when all its top stars left over a payment dispute, coming to a head when top drawer wrestler Hurricane Hernandez cold-cocked Rob Lord live on cable television, in a scene that wasn't in the storyline. We will keep you updated on how the story unfolds.

************************************************** *****

SIDEBAR

Ray Mancini's career got of to a promising start when he knocked out Sean O'Grady in the eighth round. However, he has lost his last two bouts and it doesn't look as if he'll be boxing in the near future. Only time will tell if he'll get his career back on track.

13th - New York, NY

It was a sell-out crowd at Madison Square Garden for the eagerly awaited re-match between house fighter 'Iron' Mike Tyson and Chicago's Oliver McCall. These two fistic warriors met last month, with McCall scoring an upset split decision victory over the former heavyweight kingpin, mainly down to the fact that he floored Tyson in the second.
The opening round was a feeling out process, with not much leather thrown and Tyson just edging it. In the second both men began to open up, with both fighters landing some heavy artillery and McCall getting the better of it, taking the round and staggering the New Yorker in the process. Tyson took command in the third, wobbling McCall and opening up a nasty cut over his right eye in the process. The end came in the fourth, with McCall still groggy and looking to survive the round with Tyson pursuing him, landing his mean punches. Tyson finally put McCall away at the end of the round after landing a devastating hook that seperated the usually iron-jawed McCall from his senses.
There were concerns for McCall at first but he soon regained his feet and Tyson went over to offer words of condolences to his beaten foe, with both men showing the obvious respect they have for each other. That respect doesn't go out to Evander Holyfield however, who was sitting in the front row and hopes to get Tyson in the ring. Tyson leant over the ropes pointing at him and shouted "You're next punk".
Holyfield, a wry smile on his face, nodded his head, knowing that he'll probably get his man in the ring.
Tyson improved to 11-3 [10], whilst McCalls ledger dipped to 10-2 [3].

The chief support was also a re-match from last months MSG fight card, when the Bronxs' Iran 'The Blade' Barkley got a questionable decision over Frank Tate, that many felt was a hometown verdict. Tate came into the lions den once more to try and set the record straight, which he did, winning a split one with scores of 97-94, 96-95, and 95-97. It was a close fought contest with Tate boxing and Barkley looking to get inside where he was more effective. Barkley dropped to 9-5 [4], whilst Tate improved to 7-5-2 [1] and said he was over the moon at getting the verdict as the last fight really rankled him.

In a lightweight contest Sean O'Grady beat contender Hilmer Kenty, stopping him in the sixth of a scheduled ten. Kenty started well but then O'Grady started to get on top, with the referee stopping the bout at the 2.38 mark, with Kenty, after being down for a nine count, no longer able to defend himself. O'Grady moves to 3-1 [1], Kenty drops to 2-2 [1].

Middleweight prospect Julian Jackson moved to 3-0 [1] with a third round stoppage over Juan Carlos Barretto 0-10. Jackson, after being down twice in the second and both eyes swelling up, forced the stoppage at the 2.45 mark after opening up a horrific looking gash over the right eye of his opponent.

Fillipino lightweight Rolando Navarette remained unbeaten after gaining a six round unanimous verdict over Art Frias with scores of 59-55 on all cards. Frias was down in the second and drops to 0-3, whilst Navarrette improves to 2-0-1.

The opener saw Puerto Rican heavyweight Ossie 'Jaws' Occassio score his first victory and move to 1-1 after getting a majority decision over Jody Ballard 2-10 [1], with scores of 40-36 twice and a ridiculous 38-38 in a bout which saw Occassio take all four rounds.

Thanks Romdawg. Yeah, Tyson-Holyfield would be a cracking fight. They fought a couple of years ago with Tyson stopping 'The Real Deal' in the seventh. It's the only defeat Holyfield hasn't reversed and he's desperate for it, plus there's no love lost between the two. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

20th - London, England.

Reigning Commonwealth middleweight champ Maurice Hope made the first defense of his title when he met mandatory challenger Ayub Kalule at the London Arena. Hope started well, taking the first couple of rounds comfortably. Kalules right eye began to swell in the first. This may have stung him into action as he came out for the third a different fighter, and took the next three rounds. At the beginning of the sixth Kaluel opened up a nasty gash above the left eye of the champion which prompted the ringside doctor to examine it. He indicated to the referee to stop the fight, which he did, much to the dismay of Hope, his corner, and all the fans in attendance. The end came at 23 seconds of the round. Hope left the ring in disgust as a joyful Kalule had the belt placed around his waist, although he did send a message of congratulations to the new champ later on. Kalule improves to 5-3-1 [3], whilst Hope drops to 3-3 [1].

It was a bad night for another Englishman, as Alan 'Boom Boom' Minter was outboxed, outworked, and outsmarted Sumbu Kalmbay from Italy by way of the Congo. He was also busted up, suffering bleeding above both eyes, swelling and a bloody nose to boot. Apart from the sixth he was never in the fight and lost unanimously by scores of 99-91, 99-91, and 98-93. Kalmbay moves to 11-0 [6], whilst Minter drops to 4-6 [2].

South African heavyweight Gerrie Coetzee scored a close, unanimous decision over eight against Marvin Camel. Camel started well and, in my eyes, won the first four, with Coetzee coming on strong later on and taking the last four in an eight rounder. All judges scored it 77-75 to Coetzee, who improves to 9-9 [3], whilst Camel drops to 2-7.

Journeyman heavyweight Trevor Berbick scored a win over Anthony Willis, stopping him in the fourth of a scheduled eight rounder. Willis was down in the third, and stopped in the next round after taking some serious punishment. The end came at the 2.51 mark, and Berbick moves to 5-9-1 [3], while Willis drops to 2-10-2 [1].

After a close opening round in a lightweight contest, Ernesto Espana came on strong and knocked Tirso Albia out at 1.18 of the fourth to improve to 1-1-1 [1]. Albia drops to 0-2-1.

Lightweight Claude Noel scored his first win as a pro, knocking out Freddy Cruz in the eighth and last round. Noel moves his pro ledger to 1-2 [1]. Cruz is now 0-3.

27th - Las Vegas, NV

World middleweight champion, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, made the third defense of his title against another quiet hardman, Gerald 'The G-Man' McClellan. It was the second time these two men had met, with Haglar winning by unanimous decision over ten in their last encounter. This was Haglers mandatory.
The opener was a feeling out round, with Hagler taking the second, causing a swelling in the process around McClellans right eye. Controversy struck in the third, with McClellan opening up a nasty gash beneath Haglers left eye early on. The ringside doctor inspected it, and signalled to the referee to stop the bout, which he did. Hagler was livid, claiming, rightly so, that it wasn't interfering with his vision, and that it was too early to stop it. It was to no avail, as the fight had been stopped at the 0.29 mark, and McClellan was now the new middleweight champion of the world. The new champ is now 10-1 [8], with the former champ suffering his first loss and dropping to 7-1 [5]. Hagler challenged McClellan to a rematch, McClellan went of and partied into the night.

In another middleweight match-up, between two top contenders, Mike 'The Bodysnatcher' Mccallum won a unanimous ten round decision against Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins. Both men suffered gashes underneath there eyes in this fight, but luckily the referee didn't stop it. It was a competetive match, with Mccallum winning the majority of the rounds and dropping Hopkins in the ninth from a cross. Hopkins was up at seven. The scores were 98-92 twice, and 97-93, all for McCallum, who now improves to 6-2 [2]. Hopkins, who has been matched tough, dropped to 4-4 [2].

In a battle of heavyweight's, James 'Bonecrusher' Smith took a split verdict over top ten contender Pinklon 'Pinky' Thomas, who drops to 9-8 [7]. The scores were 96-95 twice to Smith, and 96-95 to Thomas. It was that close, with Smith 10-8 [4], looking the loser due to a badly gashed and swollen eye.

Hot middleweight contender, Michael 'Second To' Nunn, put on another clinical boxing display before ko'ing former prospect Mark Medal, 5-4-1 [1], at the 2.17 mark of round eight. Up to then it had been a one-horse reace with Nunn, 8-0 [3], dominating.

Lightweight Charlie 'Choo Choo' Brown won a unanimous ten round decision over Bazooka Limon. Scores were 97-94 twice, and 99-92. Brown improves to 3-1 [1], whilst Limon drops to 1-2 [1].

It wasn't too long ago when heavyweight Tony 'TNT' Tucker was challenging for the world heavyweight title. Tonight he was opening the show, albeit a world title show, when he knocked out trial horse Derrick Banks in the fifth of a scheduled eight. Tucker had dominated up to then and Banks was counred out whilst on his knee. The end came at the 1.20 mark with Tucker improving to 5-9 [2], and Banks dropping to 3-9-3 [1].

Hi Romdawg. I reckon you're right, Haglers going to be in one foul mood in his next fight and be wanting to take it out on someone. He's hoping it will be McClellan. I too pity his next opponent. B-Hop could probably do with a few easy[er] fights to get back on the winning track. Kudos to him though for taking on the top guys.
Stay tuned,
Ian.

HAGLER CHALLENGES MCCLELLAN
Middleweight Marvelous Marvin Hagler has challenged world middleweight champion Gerald 'The G-Man' McClellan to a rubber match. Both men have split a pair of fights, the most recent one being Saturday night when Mcclellan took Haglers world title on cuts. Hagler had previously beaten McClellan on points over ten last year.

Hagler is furious at the referee's stoppage, which resulted in him losing his crown, claiming that it wasn't affecting his vision, and that he should have been given another couple of rounds at least. His handlers, the Petronelli brothers, Goody and Pat have lodged aa formal complaint with the GBA, demanding a return fight. This has been turned down by GBA President Ian Lord, who stated that the stoppage was just, and that he didn't want to set a precedent whereby every fighter who loses will demand a re-match.

Hagler said the following in his challenge to the world champ.
"No disrespect to McClellan, but he knows that I'd have beaten him. I want my title back, and I don't care if we have to go at it in a parking lot, because I know I'll beat him. I'll never get my undeafeated record back, but I will get my title back."

When asked to respond to this challenge, McClellan replied with the following;
"Hell, I'd fight the man in a phone booth if the moneys right, but I'll just have to wait and see what my manager thinks."

We'll have to wait and see how this one pans out, but most people feel that McClellan, who is a true warrior, will not want to have people think that he won the title in a tainted way, however unjust that is. Their was no foul play on his part. Also, money talks, and there would be big bucks in a re-match with Hagler. Stay tuned.

On Wednesday May 31st, the first GBA monthly television show was screened, entitled Guts,Blood,Adrenalin. It was hosted by the eccentric boxing journalist/historian, Buzz Reilly and a panel of experts. Here is a brief re-cap;

The show opened with the Marvin Hagler - Gerald McClellan world middleweight title fight, followed by the Maurice Hope - Ayub Kalule Commonwealth middleweight title fight and was followed by a discussion on cuts stoppages, as both of these fights were stopped in the third round with the champions both sustaining cuts under the eye. What followed was a lively debate, made even more lively when the phone-in started.

Next up was the North American heavyweight title eliminator between James 'Buster' Douglas and Tony 'TNT' Tubbs, which Douglas won in the fifth.

An update was given on the lightweight elimination tournament. Roberto Duran is in the final by way of default after Cornelius Boza-Edwards and Sammy Serrano boxed to two draws, thus eliminating themselves. They had a look at next months semi-final match between Edwin Rosario and Livingstone Bramble, with the general consensus being that it's a pick 'em fight.

An update was given on the sensational Ray Mancini lawsuit, with speculation as to the whereabouts of the main suspect, Rob Lord, dubbed Rob The Rogue by the national press. He has been missing for the past week.

And finally, it showed the heavyweight sslugfest between ex-world champ 'Iron' Mike Tyson, and his former conqueror Oliver McCall. Tyson got the win this time, stopping 'The Atomic Bull' in the fourth.

The ratings for this show went throught the roof.

New world middleweight champ, Gerald McClellan, will make the first defense of his title against the man he won it from, Marvin Hagler. There was a controversial end to their previous fight, and both men want to set the record straight. It will be the third time these two warriors have met, with them share one bout a piece. It is scheduled for September, over the new championship course of fifteen rounds.

Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield have signed to meet each other next month. These two met a couple of yeards ago, with Tyson stopping Holyfield in the seventh. Bad blood has developed between them since then.

Italy's Sumbu Kalambay, by way of The Congo, will challenge for Maurice Hope's European middleweight title in August. Minter was the mandatory challenger for that title, but forfeited that right when he lost to Kalambay, who is now an Italian citizen. Minter's management team tried to pay Kalambay step aside money, with the promise of making the first defense against him if Minter won. Kalambay was having none of it. It is scheduled for twelve.
