I think you're right there Chris and it's going to be interesting to see how this one pans out. I mainly use fighters who have held or fought for a 'world' title from 1980 onwards, and it just goes to show what a tough bunch the light-heavies were in the 80's.

I'm looking forward to that LHW tournament should be good times throughout. That Lewis/Tyson fight looks pretty good as well. I'm taking Tyson by KO in the 9th.

I'll also take Tyson to win by KO in the mid to late rounds, after Lewis has built up a points lead. I'll be simming that one later and will have all the fight cards written up soon. |

Boxing Argus Issue 1 June 2007 Editorial Hi, welcome to the first issue of the first ever magazine dedicated solely to the world of professional boxing. We'll be bringing you all the news and fight reports as it happens, straight to your doorstep. The big news this month was the beginning of the sixteen man light heavyweight tournament, to crown the inaugral world champion. Our chief correspondent, Babe Arthur, will be giving the run-down on the sixteen participants later in this issue. You can also find out how they got on. However, in my eyes at least, this was superseded by the announcement that former world heavyweight champion 'Iron' Mike Tyson would be meeting number two contender Lennox Lewis. This is a fight that appealed to me immediately, but to say that I was surprised that it was made at such short notice would be an understatement. It was a fight that I thought neither man, Lewis especially, needed right at this moment, but then digging deeper, I found out it made perfect sense. Kevin Rooney, Tysons trainer from day one, say's his charge needs a good scalp to make people sit up and take notice of him again, and that Lewis is the ideal foe. "Lewis is made for Mike," Rooney stated in the build up to fight. "When Lewis get's hit, he goes, and there ain't no harder hitter in the whole of boxing than Mike. When he lands one, the ends just around the corner." A fired up Tyson then told reporters that he wants his old title back. "Life as an ex-champ is no fun. I want my old title back, and whoever gets in my way is getting knocked out." Fierce words indeed, but you can't help but believe him, or at least take notice. Over to Lewis. His trainer Emmanuel Steward, who along with Angelo Dundee is probably the best trainer in the sport right now, said Lennox needs to redeem himself following his mauling by another former champ, Riddick Bowe, last December. "Lewis has won a fight since then," Steward said from their training camp, meaning the succesful Commonwealth title defense against the lacklustre South African Gerrie Coetzee, " but people just remember the beating he took at the fists of Bowe last December. He didn't follow the game plan that night, but he will against Tyson and we'll come away with the victory. That will make people sit up and take notice of Lennox again." It promises to be explosive, and you'll be able to read the full report later in the issue. Enjoy! Abraham Charles - Editor[/I] Page 1 Last edited by Ian Lord; 07-09-2007 at 04:58 PM. |

Boxing Argus Issue 1 June, 2007 News
Two-time world middleweight champion Marvin Hagler will make the next defense of his title against New York - Italian Vito Antuofermo in September. In other world title news, lightweight champ Roberto Duran will make the third defense of his title, also in September, against US champ Harry Arroyo. The two have met before, with Arroyo being the only man to take 'Hands of Stone' the distance. Duran has chillingly stated that this time Arroyo won't make it beyond the first round. North American and United States middleweight champ Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins will put his titles on the line in August against Mark Medal. It is expected to be the chief support to the Larry Holmes v Tim Witherspoon world heavyweight title fight, to be staged in Pennsylavania. Holmes, Witherspoon, and Hopkins all hail from Pennsylvania. The semi-final re-match in the welterweight tournament between Don Curry and Antonio Cervantes takes place in August over twelve rounds. Both men fought to a twelve round draw last month. The winner meets Sugar Ray Leonard for the vacant world title. Bazooka Limon and Jose Luis Ramirez will meet over twelve rounds in August for the inaugral Mexican lightweight bauble. Federal agents are still searching high and low for GBA vice-president Rob Lord, who is on the run for numerous offenses relating to the Ray Mancini case. His last sighting was in the Far East. Rewards for his whereabouts have been posted. Page 2 Last edited by Ian Lord; 07-11-2007 at 03:45 PM. |

Boxing Argus Issue 1 June, 2007 Light-heavy tourney
With the upcoming sixteen man light-heavyweight tournament to crown the first world light-heavyweight champion about to get under way, our chief reporter, Babe Arthur, along with our overseas correspondents Albert Smith and Akio Ohshima, have compiled a brief run-down on the participants. Michael Spinks [Missouri] Has an awkward style but possesses all the tools to win the tournament. Starts as favourite. Virgil Hill [Missouri] An incredibly talented fighter with a sharp boxing brain, of Native American origin. Matthew Saad Muhammad [Pennsylvania] This guys a real exciting fighter. Orphaned and abandoned as a child, it seems to have put real steel into him. Graciano Rochigiani [Germany] Tough German fighter who lacks any real one-punch power. Fulgencio Obelmejias [Venezuela] South American fighter with decent punching power. Bobby Czyz [New Jersey] Good looking, charismatic fighter with awesome spirit. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad [New York] Talented fighter with a hell of a punch. The question mark is his desire. Chong-Pal Park [Korea] An all round sound fighter from the Orient. Dwight Qawi [Maryland] Short, squat fighter, Qawi is as tough as they come. Took up boxing whilst doing a stretch in the Sate Pen. Has devastating punching power. Prince Charles Williams [Ohio] A powerful puncher who, like Mustafa Muhammad, has question marks about his heart. Dennis Andries [Guyana] A cunning, tough fighter who is probably too crude to go all the way. Donny LaLonde [Canada] 'The Golden Boy' packs a solid punch but probably has to leaky a defense to go all the way. Murray Sutherland [Scotland] A gritty, determined fighter, who'll give anyone a run for their money. Marvin Johnson [Indiana] Should give most men a tough fight. J B Williamson [Indiana] Boxer-puncher from Indiana will struggle against the upper echelon fighters. Leslie Stewart [Trinidad] A lack of defense will prove costly for this fighter from the Carribean. Page 3 Last edited by Ian Lord; 07-11-2007 at 04:21 PM. |

Boxing Argus Issue 1 June, 2007 The Big Fight Lennox Lewis v Mike Tyson 30th - Atlantic City, NJ
Two of the top heavyweights met here at the Boardwalk Hotel when former world champ 'Iron' Mike Tyson squared off against Commonwealth champ and number two contender Lennox Lewis. There'd been a few hostilities between these two in the week leading up to the fight and you could tell there was no love lost between them before the opening bell. Tyson was pacing the ring like a caged fighter while the announcements were made with a snarl across his face. Lewis was trying to look relaxed, but looked a bit apprehensive. The opening bell rang, and Tyson came storming out, as he has done all career. He was on top of Lewis immediately, and had him in trouble. Lewis was rocked and staggerred throughout the first, and was releived to hear the bell. Lewis took the second, although in negative fashion, much to the derision of the crowd. Tyson took the third, wobbling Lewis in the process. The fourth was a real barn burner, with both men making a fight of it. Lewis, after taking some solid blows, was put down for a three count following a punishing shot to the liver. Lewis took the fifth by keeping the rampaging Tyson at a distance. Tyson was trying to bull-rush his way inside all round, only to be picked of repeatedly. Both men landed some solid punches in the sixth, with Tyson edging it. The seventh was even. Tyson looked to be wilting in the eight, in a round which belonged to Lewis. He also ended the stanza with a slight puffiness below his right eye. However, Lewis' world came crashing down in the ninth. He was down for an eight count at the beginning of the round, again from a body-shot, and Tyson was right on top of him. Lewis was again sent crashing to the canvas, this time from a solid shot to the jaw, he gamely regained his feet at the count of five, but you knew the end was just around the corner. When he went down for a third time, this time from an uppercut which landed flush on the jaw, it was waved over at the 2.55 mark. "I'm back!!!" Tyson roared after the bout. "Larry, I'm coming for ya'." Refering to Larry Holmes, world heavyweight champ. Tyson upped his stats to 15-6 [14], whilst Lewis is now 19-3 [13]. Middleweight Frank Tate fought out of his skin to earn a much deserved draw against former world champ Gerald McClellan. Scores were 95-95 [x2], and 96-94 McClellan. Tate was rocked a couple of times, mainly in the fifth and seventh rounds, but boxed superbly at other times. He is now 9-6-3 [1]. McClellan, 11-3-1 [9], blamed weight making difficulties and said he is eyeing a move to the newly created light heavyweight division. Heavyweight contender, Tony 'TNT' Tucker made short work of Bruce Seldon, stopping him at 2.56 of the opener. Seldon was dropped by a bodyshot right after the opening bell, and was never out of trouble from then on. Tucker improved to 13-9-1 [8], whilst Seldon dipped to 6-6 [4]. Other results; Welter: Aaron Pryor W10[u] Maurice Blocker Light-Heavy: Virgil Hill W10[u] JB Williamson Light: Art Frias W8[u] Lee Cargle Babe Arthur Page 4 Last edited by Ian Lord; 07-11-2007 at 05:25 PM. |

Can't do better then that on a prediction. Good to see Tyson pick up a big win as for Lewis he hasn't done to well against the top level fighters it might be best for him to stick on the Commonwealth level for a few more fights before stepping back up against the best.

You're right about Lewis also. Cruises to victory most of the time, but when he steps up he always seems out of his depth. |
