BOWE TO TACKLE TYSON...AGAIN
BIG DADDY BEATS PAGE FOR NORTH AMERICAN AND US STRAPS, AND SETS UP DATE WITH 'IRON' MIKE. Atlantic City, NJ. Riddick Bowe was simply too strong for Greg Page as he took a unanimous twelve round decision. Bowe took the opening round, but was then floored right at the beginning of the second by a perfectly eexecuted hook. After that, however, it was all Bowe, as he went on to win seven of the remaining ten rounds. Bowe won rounds three through six, dropping Page with a bodyshot in the fifth. Round seven was even but Bowe was back in control in the eighth. He took a breather in the ninth, then won rounds ten and eleven. Page, realising he needed a knockout to win, really went for it in the last round, but it was too late, and Bowe won by scores of115-112 twice, and 116-111. Bowe won the vacant North American and US heavyweight titles, and is now next in line for Tyson. "I can't wait," Bowe said after the bout, referring to Tyson, "last time he beat me with two seconds left, this time I'm going to beat him with eleven rounds left. Knockout in the first round." A bold prediction, but it's no secret these two don't like each other, and it promises to be explosive. In the chief support, Larry Holmes stopped 'Big' John Tate in the third round when Tate was no longer able to defend himself. Each man had won a round apiece going into the third, but Holmes just began picking Tate apart and the referee waved it all off with eight seconds remaining. Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes and Gerrie Coetzee put on an absolute humdinger of an opening round, going toe to toe, then Dokes seemed to lose interest, and Coetzee won a unanimous decision with scores of 94-92, 95-91, and 94-93. Tony 'TNT' Tubbs knocked out an out of shape Trevor Berbick in the first of a scheduled ten. The end came at the 2:27 mark when Tubbs put his opponent away with a cross. 'Terrible' Tim Witherspoon beat Jody Ballard by unanimous decision with scores of 79-73, and 80-71 twice. Ballard went down in the eighth from a bodyshot. Derek Banks and Anthony 'Big Hand' Willis, both coming of impressive wins, fought to a six round draw in the opening bout. The scores were 59-55 Banks, 59-55 Willis, and 57-57. |

HOLMES TOO MUCH FOR BRAVE TUBBS
Philadelphia, PA. Larry Holmes, cheered on by his fans from nearby Easton, was just too much for the outgunned Tony 'TNT' Tubbs. Tubbs showed the heart of a lion by going the distance, but won only the third and fourth rounds, Holmes taking the rest, in a big way. Holmes utilised his stiff left jab, usually following it with a cross, and Tubbs didn't have an answer all night. By the third round, Tubbs' left eye had began to swell, and he was dropped in the fifth by a short, clean hook. By now Tubbs had begun to carry his hands low. Holmes dropped Tubbs in the ninth and tenth rounds, and Tubbs finished the bout with left and right eye swollen, and a gash over his left eye to boot. The scores were 98-89 on all judges cards. Philadelphia's favourite boxing son, 'Terrible' Tim Witherspoon, put on a dominant display against Derek Banks, winning every round before KO'ing his opponent in the seventh round. The crowd were wild throughout the bout. James 'Buster' Douglas scored a knockout victory over an out of shape Gerrie Coetzee, who looked as if he wanted to be anywhere but in the ring. Douglas put on some neat boxing skills in the opening round, then started landing some heavier bombs in the second, landing an overhand right that put Coetzee down on his knee for the count. He looked as though he could have beaten the count, but decided to stay there. It was at the 2.00 mark. Pinklon 'Pinky' Thomas was back on the winning trail with a third round KO of Gary Winmon. Thomas put Winmon down in the second, then put him away in the third when he walked onto a left hook. Derek Banks and Anthony 'Big Hand' Willis fought each other again, and fought to another draw over eight rounds. The scores were 78-75 Willis, 77-76 Banks, and 76-76 even. After sharing a round apiece in the opening two rounds, Lennox Lewis came out in the third and backed Mike 'Hercules' Weaver into a corner before unleashing a devastating cross which knocked out his opponent at the 0.31 mark. It was a good return to the ring for Lewis, whilst Weaver is now winless in his last six, and looks to be going nowhere. After the card had finished, GBA COmmisioner Ian 'Iggy' Lord climbed into the ring, and shook hands with Larry Holmes and Tony Tubbs. He then made an announcement. "I know that most of you have heard about the formation of the GBA's middleweight division," he said. "Well the first sixteen fighters have been finalised, and the contracts have been signed. I would now appreciate it if you all remain quiet while I read the boxers names out, in order of seedings. 1. Mike McCallum 2. Marvin Hagler 3. Bernard Hopkins 4. James Toney 5. Maurice Hope 6. Ayub Kalule 7. Gerald McClellan 8. Davey Moore 9. Frank Tate 10.Iran Barkley 11.Alan Minter 12.Vito Antuofermo 13.Keith Holmes 14.Tadashi Mihara 15.Shinji Takehara 16.John David Jackson A loud round of applause was heard when Philadelphia's Bernard Hopkins was called out, who was sat in the front row. " The tournament to crown the middleweight champion shall begin next month, along the same lines as the heavyweight tournament, and I'd now just like to wish you all a Merry Christmas." With that Lord left the ring. |

Hi Shaft, thanks for the interest. I think Hagler-McClellan would be a great, great fight. Next posting will be tomorrow night, as we have visitors and we're about to get drunk, whilst discussing boxing greats of the past over a few glasses of malt whiskey!!!Regards, Ian.

2004 Year End Awards
Fighter of the Year: Mike Tyson After winning an exciting majority decision over James 'Bonecrusher' Smith in his pro debut in January, Tyson seemed to go on the rampage, stopping his next five opponents, including Riddick Bowe, Greg Page, and Evander Holyfield [to win vacant World title]. Looks unstoppable at the moment, and 2005 looks to be just as promising. Fight of the Year: Mike Tyson TKO10 Riddick Bowe A barnstormer of a fight that had it all, bar knockdowns or knockouts. Toe to toe action, fight swinging one way, then the other, before Tyson started beating Bowe mercilessly in the tenth and it was waved off with two seconds remaining. The good news - these two are going to do it again in 2005. |

LEWIS WINS, BERBICK BLEEDS
London, England. In a bit of a clinchfest, Lennox Lewis emerged victorious when referee Micky Vann ruled Berbick could no longer continue, due to a gash over his right eye. The end came in the eight round, with Berbick slightly ahead on points at the time of the stoppage. The opening round was marred by spoiling tactics from both men, with Berbick taking it due to the fact that he nearly put Lewis down at the end of the round with an uppercut. Emmanuel Steward, Lewis' trainer, could be heard screaming between rounds, "remember the Willis fight," in reference to Lewis being put away by Anthony Willis when he lost concentration and walked onto the same punch. The second round was even, with yet more clinching, and both men working cautiously behind their jab when they were boxing. Berbick took the next two rounds, although he suffered a gash under his left eye in the fourth. Lewis took the next two rounds by landing the more shots. Berbick took the seventh, then the end come in the eighth. Lewis landed a powerful shot that opened up a gash over Berbicks right eye, making his face a mask of red, and referee Micky Vann jumped in immediately, halting the fight and giving the victory to Lewis. Berbick was livid after the bout and felt he should have been given at least to the end of the round so his cutman could have worked on it. He has a point. Also, it wasn't the first time that had occurred this night. Marvelous Marvin Hagler took apart the gutsy Shinji Takehara, knocking him out in the seventh round with one of the most debilitating bodyshots ever thrown. Takehara stood no chance of getting up. Hagler won every round except the fifth, when he seemed to take his foot of the pedal. Hagler was deducted a point in the opening round for a headbutt that nobody saw bar the referee. It didn't put him off though, and Hagler totally dominated the fight. Maurice Hope, ahead 49-45 on all cards, was stopped by a bad gash over his right eye in the sixth round against Vito Antuofermo. The opening round was an absolute cracker, and it was an entertaining fight until it was stopped. Hope, like Berbick later in the night, felt he could have continued. Alan 'Boom Boom' Minter won a unanimous decision against Ayub Kalule with scores of 98-88 twice, and 97-89. Minter was in control throughout and put his opponent down in the sixth, ninth, and tenth rounds. Davey 'Bronx' Moore and Frank Tate fought to a majority draw with scores of 95-95 twice, and 96-94 to Tate. Tate done the slicker boxing, and landed more often, whereas Moore landed with the bigger blows. After two stalemates, there was finally a winner between Derek Banks and Anthony Willis when Banks won a majority decision with scores of 77-73, 76-75, and 75-75. Willis went down twice in the first round. |

Canton, OH
January 15th, 2005. Old foes Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes and Tony 'TNT' Tubbs went at it again, with this time Tubbs eking out a close, unanimous decision, with scores of 96-94 twice, and 96-95. There were no knockdowns, with both men using there boxing skills, and Tubbs getting the decision in a close bout. This was an eliminator for the Ohio strap, and Tubbs will now face the champion, James 'Buster' Douglas. In an exciting heavyweight matchup, 'Big' John Tate stopped former World title challenger Tony 'TNT' Tucker, making his first appearance since being KO'd by Mike Tyson in October. Both men threw heavy bombs throughout, and their was no way this one was going to go the distance, although it looked as though Tucker would be the victor. He dropped Tate in the second after devastating combination to head and body. The fight was close, with Tate beginning to take over by the sixth round, cutting Tuckers eye and having Tucker hurt badly before the bell saved Tucker from any further punishment. Tate came out in the seventh, looking to finish Tucker off. He dropped Tucker at the beginning of the round with a solid cross, then rained in with a barrage of punches, dropping Tucker again. Tucker again beat the count, and looked out on his feet. Tate sensed the end now and moved in for the kill. He missed with a few but then landed with a combination of punches which again put Tucker down. The brave Tucker again beat the count, and the fight was allowed to continue, although most people felt it should have been stopped here. Tate moved in again, landing some damaging punches with no resistance, and referee Steve Smoger wrapped his arms around Tony Tucker at the 2.00 mark. Mike 'The Bodysnatcher' McCallum put on a commanding display against John David Jackson, dropping only the seventh round, before putting his opponent away in the eighth round. Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins was just too much for Tadeshi Mihara, knocking him out in the seventh round with a straight right followed by a crashing hook. Hopkins won every round, opening up a gash over Mihara's right eye in the second, then dropping him with a cross in the third. He dropped his opponent again in the fifth, and the fight should have been stopped, as Mihara had no fight left in him and Hopkins beat him mercilessly for the next couple of rounds before the end came. In a match for the connoisuers, James 'Lights Out' Toney outpointed Keith Holmes by scores of 97-94,96-94, and 99-91. Both men were using slick boxing skills, with Toney finding the mark more often and taking the match. Gerald 'The G-Man' McClellan stopped Iran 'The Blade' Barkley in the opening round. McClellan trapped Barkley in the corner, right at the beginning of the bout, and opened up a gash above his left eye, which McClellan worked on for the resrt of the bout, forcing the referee to stop the bout at the 2.04 mark. |

February 5th, 2005.
Canton, OH. James 'Buster' Douglas retained his Ohio State heavyweight title by the skin of his teeth, when he fought to a majority draw against Tony 'TNT' Tubbs. It was ten rounds of solid boxing from both men, and a draw was a fair result. There were no knockdowns, and it didn't look like there would be any, as both men worked cautiously behind the jab for the duration of the fight. After the bout, Claude Abrams of Boxing News spoke to both men. Although Douglas and Tubbs are big rivals in Ohio, there is no ill feelings between the two. "It was a close fight," Tubbs said, "but I felt I just squeezed it, by a round, maybe two." Douglas shook his head with a smile on his face. "No way, you didn't do enough to beat me," Douglas replied. "Remember, I'm the champ, you've got to take the title from me." "Next time buddy," Tubbs remarked, "next time." It looks likely that these two will get it on again in the future, but probably not right away, as Douglas now gets a mandatory shot at the US title held by Riddick Bowe, who also owns the North American strap, which would also be on the line. In the chief support, Larry Holmes blew away Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes in three rounds. Dokes was never in the fight. He looked ready to go halfway through round one, and the writing was on the wall from then on. Round 2 was a big round for Holmes, 10-6 on two of the judges cards, due to the fact that Dokes was down twice and finished the round with a swollen eye. The end came in the third when Dokes, out on his feet, walked onto a vicous uppercut at the 2:52 mark. Frank Tate won his rematch against Davey Moore, boxing his way to a comfortable points decision with scores of 99-91 twice, and 97-93. Moore started well, but by the fourth round Tate was well in control with his slick boxing skills. 'Terrible' Tim Witherspoon put in an impressive display against the outgunned Gary 'The Bull' Winmon. He dropped his opponent in the second, then finished him off in the sixth, when, after dropping Winmon for a count of five, opened up on the defenceless Winmon, with the referee stepping in to stop the one sided fight. Pinklon Thomas, usually a slick boxer, dished out a beating over two rounds to Derek Amos. A bodyshot finished his foe. James 'Lights Out' Toney totally controlled his six round opener against 'Irish' Chris Ward, stopping his opponent in the fifth round after Ward had been down from a punishing bodyshot. Ward was also down in the opener. |

Owensboro, KY. Greg Page, behind on points, stopped 'Big' John Tate in the fifth of a ten rounder. Tate came out for the opener, throwing bombs and dominating Page for the three minutes, but Page regrouped and took the second. The third was close, with Tate just edging it. Page came out in the fifth with a look of intent on his face. He dished out punishment to Tate, then trapped the big man in the corner, throwing punch affter punch unanswered, until the referee stopped the bout at the 2.07 mark.
Lennox Lewis took a split decision against James 'Bonecrusher' Smith over eight rounds. The scores were 78-73, 77-74 Lewis and 76-75 Smith. It was a fair result. Lewis took the opening two rounds, dropping Smith in the second with a bodyshot, but Smith recovered and took the third. There was more clinching than punching in the even fourth round. Lewis took the fifth, then the sixth round was the highlight of the fight, with both men throwing caution to the wind. Lewis landed the more blows and took the round. By the seventh, Smith appeared fatigued, but it didn't stop him putting Lewis down with an uppercut. Lewis beat the count and made it to the bell. Lewis came out for the last round and won it with his jab, keeping the exhausted Smith at bay. After the bout, the reserved Lewis said he is now ready for the top ten. "My dream is to be the heavyweight champion of the world, and I know I can do it." Maybe, but his shaky chin, exposed by clubfighter Anthony Willis, could cause him a major problem in his quest. In a mis-match, Marvelous Marvin Hagler took apart Anthony Bartinelli, stopping him in the second round at the 2.49 mark. There were no knockdowns, but by the end Bartinelli couldn't fight back. Hagler now faces Gerald McClellan, who will be an entirely different kettle of fish. Mik 'Hercules' Weaver put on an aggresive display from start to finish, but couldn't put away Anthony Willis, winning by scores of 78-73 on all three judges cards. Willis finished the bout with both eyes swollen, with a cut over his right one. Keith Holmes boxed his way to a six rounds points decision over Larry Banks with scores of 58-56 on all cards. Ayub Kalule stopped Juan Carlos Barreto in the opener, when he threw an inch perfect uppercut out of nowhere. Barreto went down, but beat the count. However, Kayule wasn't going to let his opponent of the hook and went in for the finish, stopping his opponent at 2.49 of the opener. |
