Atlantic City, NJ.

Top heavyweight Greg Page made short work of Pinklon 'Pinky' Thomas, who was stepping up in class. Page won the opener by outboxing his rival, then opened up in the second, dishing out some severe punishment before dropping Thomas for a count of six. Thomas was on shaky legs when he regained his feet, and Page took advantage, forcing the stoppage at the 2.50 mark when Thomas could no longer defend himself.

Gerald McClellan also made short work of his opponent, knocking out John David Jackson after just fifty six seconds, when he let fly with a hook that put Jackson on his back and out for the count.

James 'Bonecrusher' Smith scored a unanimous decision over Jody Ballard, with scores of 79-72, 80-73, and 78-73. Smith was in control throughout and dropped Ballard from a bodyshot in the third.

Mike 'Hercules' Weaver dominated gary 'The Bull' Winmon for three rounds before finishing him off at the 2.47 mark of round four with a combination of punches.

Anthony 'Big Hand' Willis beat Marvin Camel by unanimous decision over eight rounds with scores of 78-73, 79-72, and 77-74. Camel took two rounds, with Willis taking the other six and winning them more convincingly. Camel went down in the last round for a count of four.

In the opener, Mark Medal won his pro debut by outpointing Juan Carlos Barretto over four rounds with scores of 39-37 on all three cards. Medal suffered a split lip right at the beginning of the first round from what looked like a headbutt in a clinch. Welcome to the pro ranks Mark.

New York, NY. Former heavyweight kingpin, 'Iron' Mike Tyson made a winning return to the ring in front of his hometown fans at New York's Madison Square Garden when he knocked out Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes in the fifth round.

Dokes started well, taking the first two rounds and bloodying Tyson's nose in the process, but Tyson's power began to tell from the third onward as he began to take control. Tyson dropped Dokes in the third after he had backed him into a corner and dropped him with a cross. Tyson took the fourth and then finished procedings in the fifth, when a straight right staggered Dokes, then a combination of blows to the head and body put Dokes down for the count at the 2.36 mark.

Tyson hopes to get a rematch with World champ and big New York rival Riddick Bowe, although it's rumoured that Tyson will meet North American champ Larry Holmes first, probably in December, in what will be an eliminator for the World title.

Dokes has proved that he can't cut it with the upper echelons of the division, and will probably assume the mantle of gatekeeper.

Fellow New Yorker Iran 'The Blade' Barkley won a unanimous points decision against Keith Holmes in the chief support. It was a close affair, with Barkley taking the last two rounds to win the fight. Both men went down, Holmes in the third, and Barkley in the eighth, with Holmes ending the fight with a badly damaged left eye. The scores were 96-92, 95-94, and 95-94.

Undercard Action

Frank Tate won a unanimous decision against the outclassed Leonard Townsend with scores of 98-92, 98-92, and a rather surprising 96-94. Tate dominated, dropping only the third and eighth round.

Uganda's Ayub Kalule took a unanimous decision against the tough Japanese fighter, Tadeshi Mihara. Scores were 79-73 twice, and 78-74 over eight rounds.

Sumbu Kalambay took his pro log to 4-0 with a unanimous win over eight rounds against Roggerrio Cacciatore with scores of 78-76, 77-75, and 77-75 again. Kalambay took the first five rounds, then Cacciatore came on strong to win the last three, but it wasn't enough. Kalambay's management team said they are looking to getting their man a fight with a name opponent in the next few months.

In the opener, 'The Atomic Bull' Oliver McCall scored a majority verdict over four on his pro debut against 'opponent' Derek Amos. Many felt it should have been a draw. Scores were 39-37, 38-37, and 38-38.

Thanks Brooks. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm also looking forward to Tyson - Holmes. I just hope nobody comes along and beats either of them in the meantime to derail it.

All the best,
Ian.

GBA NEWS

Trouble flared at the press conference for the Riddick Bowe - Tim Witherspoon World heavyweight title fight.

First of all, Bowe claimed Witherspoon doesn't belong in the same ring as him, and the next time a fight's made for his World title, it should be against a top ten contender. When Witherspoon tried to point out that he was in the top ten, Bowe pointed his finger in Witherspoon's face, and said:

"Hey, don't talk when your Big Daddy's speaking."

Bowe had a smile on his face, but the usually amiable Witherspoon didn't see the funny side, and slapped his hand away and stood up to face Bowe.

"Don't disrespect me, son," he hollered in Bowe's face, "cause I'm going to make you pay."

With that, Witherspoon and his team left, leaving Riddick Bowe standing speechless, [for once].

At the same press conference, James Toney and Bernard Hopkins also nearly came to blows when promoting their upcoming bout. Toney had been talking trash about Hopkins in various boxing publications and tabloids, during the week leading up to the press conference, and 'The Executioner' wasn't happy.

Things got a bit heated, and Hopkins stood up, and began staring down at Toney, who was still seated.

"Who do you think you are boy," Hopkins asked aggressively, "that you can talk trash about me? You think I'm going to let you get away with it, huh? This ain't the WWE you know, this is for real, this is my livelihood, and I'm going to make you pay."

At that, Toney done probably the worst thing possible. He sat there looking at Hopkins, then burst out laughing. Hopkins, who had by now lost it, kicked Toney's chair away. Toney fell to the floor, and Hopkins went to punch him. By now security had intervened and pulled Hopkins back. Toney then got to his feet and went for Hopkins and all hell broke lose. Order was finally restored, and both men were escorted back to there respective hotels, to await there grudge match.

Other news: The contracts have been signed for the Vito Antuofermo - Maurice Hope bout, which is for the vacant European middleweight title. The match will take place in September, probably in England.

Larry Holmes is to make the first defence of his North American heavyweight title against former World champion Mike Tyson in December. It will aslo be an eliminator for the World title. John Tate could scupper them plans though, as he faces Tyson this month [July]. Holmes is also talking about having a non title, ten round affair in August. His management haven't mentioned any possible opponents as yet.

Atlantic City, NJ. Mike Tyson continued his march towards a third showdown with World champ Riddick Bowe, when he beat 'Big' John Tate. There was a huge difference in size between these two men, with Tate towering over Tyson, but Tyson cut him down to size at the end of the fifth. Tate came to fight, and he mixed it up with the former champion, but he came off worse in most of the exchanges, with Tyson landing the more damaging shots. Tyson took the first four rounds, staggering Tate at the end of the first. The end came in the fifth round. Things started to get really rough, with Tyson warned for use of the elbow, when suddenly Tyson detonated two right crosses in quick succesion on the jaw of Tate, laying the big man out flat on the canvas. Tyson called out Bowe after the bout, but first he must get past North American champ and number one contender, Larry Holmes.

In the chief support, Greg Page had another early night, knocking former World title challenger Tony 'TNT' Tucker out at 2.14 of the third. The first round had the crowd on their feet, with both men throwing plenty of punches and Tucker just edging it. Page came out for the second round meaning business, and was in total control for as long as it lasted. He dominated the second round, then finished his foe of in the third, after being staggered by a solid hook to the head himself, he laid into Tucker, eventually putting him down and out.

Undercard Action.

Gerald 'The G-Man' McClellan got another inside the distance win, stopping the outgunned Anthony Bartinelli at 2.19 of the ninth round. McClellan was in total command from the opening bell, except for in the sixth round which Bartinelli took, opening up a cut nderneath McClellan's left eye in the process. Bartinelli was dropped in the fifth from a bodyshot. The end came in the ninth, when Bartinelli, after being down twice, could no longer defend himself. McClellan began to open up on him when the referee, James Condon, stepped in to stop Bartinelli from further punishment.

Frank Tate scored his first knockout win, taking Juan Carlos Barretto out in the seventh round. Tate had won every round up to that point, then put Barretto down with a right that didn't look that punishing. Barretto, who had clearly had enough by this point, when down on one knee and took the ten count.

Mike 'Hercules' Weaver scored a devastating knockout against Marvin Camel, after landing a devastating five punch combination to the head at the 0.35 mark of round six. Weaver had been well in control of the bout up to that point, dropping Camel in the third as well.

Mark Medal was lucky to get a majority draw against Larry Banks in the show opener. It was the only bout on the card to go the distance, and many felt Banks should have got the nod. The scores were 57-57 twice, and 58-57 [Medal].

BOWE RETAINS
HOPKINS AND TONEY GO TO WAR

New York, NY. World heavyweight champion, Riddick Bowe, made a succesful first defence in front of his hometown fans, when he knocked out Tim Witherspoon in the second round. Witherspoon started well, outpunching Bowe in the opener and taking the round, but fell apart in the second when the champion started to open up with some heavy artillery. Bowe was landing some punishing shots when Witherspoon went down onto one knee from an overhand right and took the count. Bowe was ecstatic, and seized the opportunity to taunt Tyson, who was watching from ringside.

"I'm the man, I'm the man," Bowe shouted at Tyson. Tyson replied with a hand gesture.

James 'Lights Out' Toney and Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins went to war in the chief support, with Toney taking a split decision and the vacant North American middleweight title with scores of 115-113 and 115-114 [Toney] and 116-113 Hopkins. There was bad blood between these two, and that was shown in the intensity at whih they fought each other.

Toney came out strong and took the opener, but Hopkins came back in the following round and dished out some punishment to his rival, and staggering him in the process. The third was close, with Toney just taking it and Hopkins suffering a gash over his left eye. Again the fourth was a close round, with Hopkins bloodying the nose of Toney, however, Toney also just edged this round, and then came out and controlled the fifth. Hopkins cutman managed to close the gash between rounds, and Hopkins came out and won the sixth big, by landing some punishing bodyshots against his opponent. The seventh was busy, with Toney just edging it, and the eighth was dead even. Hopkins edged the ninth, suffering a cut over his left eye in the process, then Toney came out and won the tenth comfortably. Hopkins took the last two rounds, but it wasn't enough, and the decision and belt, and perhaps most importantly, the bragging rights went to James Toney.

Undercard Action.

Gerrie Coetzee stopped Anthony Willis in the last round of a scheduled eight. Coetzee was leading at the time of the stoppage. He put Willis down with an overhand right, Willis beat the count but was put down again but managed to regain his feet. The referee, however, decided that Willis was in no fit state to continue and waved the fight off with two seconds remaining.

Iran 'The Blade' Barkley put on an excellent performance in front of his hometown fans, outpunching Roggerio Cacciatore for eight rounds before finishing him off at the beginning of the ninth round, when Barkley came charging out of his corner, and hammered his opponent to the canvas. Cacciatore had also been down in the fifth and eighth rounds.

Sumbu Kalambay put on another dominant display against an outclassed opponent, beating Leonard Townsend by unanimous decision, with scores of 100-87 twice, and 99-88.

Oliver McCall beat Jody Ballard by unanimous decision over six rounds, 60-53 on all judges cards. McCall dropped Ballard in the third and fourth, and looks useful.

Riddick Bowe makes the second defense of his World heavyweight title against number 3 contender Tony 'TNT' Tubbs. The bout will take place in November, date and venue to be decided. The winner must then face the winner of the Larry Holmes - Mike Tyson fight.

Evander Holyfield will be out for the rest of the year, according to specialists. 'The Real Deal' broke his hand in his defeat to Tony 'TNT' Tucker in May.

New York, NY. 'Iron' Mike Tyson got his third inside the distance win on the bounce since losing his World crown to current champ Riddick Bowe, but it was no plain sailing.

James 'Buster' Douglas came out for the first round and utilised his reach advantage by keeping Tyson at bay with his jab, taking the opening round. Tyson came for the second and dished out some serious punishment, landing hooks and uppercuts to body and head, causing Douglas' eyes to begin swelling. Tyson was dominating the third round as well, until at the two minute mark he carelessly walked onto an uppercut and went down. He beat the count but appeared to be on wobbly legs, but survived until the bell. The knockdown seemed to spur him on to even more action, and for the fourth and fifth round, began to dominate Douglas, until the former Ohio champ had no fight left in him and the referee stopped the beating at the 2.52 mark of round five.

Gerald McClellan notched up another stoppage win, when Keith Holmes, taking severe punishment, was stopped at the 1.52 mark of round nine. McClellan dominated the fight, except for the third and fourth rounds, in which Holmes put on some neat boxing skills and looked as if he might make a fight of it. McClellan resumed control in the fifth, and it was all one sided from then on. The eighth was a particularly punishing round for Holmes, as he got dropped twice and was beaten mercilessly around the ring. He came out for the ninth, but McClellan could see he had his man, and was laying into Holmes with a two fisted assault when the referee stopped the slaughter.

Undercard Action.

Iran 'The Blade' Barkley thrilled his hometown fans by dishing out a beating over ten rounds against the outclassed Larry Banks in what was a mismatch. The scores were 100-86, and 99-87 twice. Banks was down in the second, sixth, ninth and tenth, and was given a round of applause for his bravery.

In an exciting slugfest [while it lasted], Mike Weaver stopped Gerrie Coetzee in the second round. Coetzee dropped Weaver in the first after landing a barrage of punches, but Weaver came out swinging in the second, and was landing punch after punch when the referee stepped in to save Coetzee at the 2.54 mark.

After a close opener, Trevor Berbick stepped on the gas and took Derek Amos apart, forcing the referee to stop the fight at 2.36 of the third after Amos had been down twice from bodyshots.

Mark Medal, after getting outboxed in the opening round against Leonard Townsend, came out and dropped his foe at the beginning of the second. Townsend regained his feet, but Medal didn't let him of the hook, finishing him at the 1.06 mark with a devastating uppercut.

Man if only Tyson could have done that to Buster in real life and not gone to jail the 90s would have been a much more intreseting time. I'm really looking forward to that Tyson/Holmes fight should be a great one. Hopefully the time off will let Holyfield get his crap together and stop getting beat by ever guy he fights.

HAGLER HAMMERS McCALLUM TO BECOME MIDDLEWEIGHT KING

Marvelous Marvin Hagler beat up on Mike 'The Bodysnatcher' McCallum for four rounds, before finishing him off in the fifth, to become the GBA's first World Middleweight champion.

Hagler stamped his authority on the fight right from the opening bell, dishing out a beating in the first round, and getting warned in the process. McCallum started the second round well, before Hagler, working behind his southpaw jab, again took control. From then on, Hagler was in the driving seat and punished McCallum for the next two rounds, then finished him off in the fifth, after rocking his opponent with a beautiful combination of punches, then launching a two fisted assault to punch McCallum to the canvas for the ten count at the end of the fifth.

It was a brutal display from the new champion against McCallum, who was the number one seed going into the tournament and a highly respected champion. After the bout, Hagler promised to be a fighting champion who would duck nobody.

Lennox Lewis moved into world class by beating the highly respected Greg Page on points over ten rounds, with scores of 96-92 twice, and 95-93, all for Lewis. Lewis came out and took the first, doubling up on the jab, then landing the right cross into the face of Page. Page came out and outboxed Lewis in the second. Lewis then took the next two rounds, albeit closely, then got dropped in the fifth from a bodyshot and barely survived the round. The minutes rest done him good however, and he won all the remaining rounds, apart from the seventh, dropping Page in the eigth from a combination of punches, then went on to take the fight.

Afterwards, Lewis called out Bowe, and all the other top heavies. He seemed genuine about it as well.

Undercard Action.

Pinklon Thomas also moved into the top ten, by beating a grossly out of shape Michael Dokes, who has had rumours flying around about his cocaine addiction in recent months. Thomas won every round except the fifth, putting Dokes down in the second, third, and ninth, but Dokes was durable and lasted the distance, losing by unanimous decision with scores of 98-89, 98-90, and 99-89. It makes you wonder, if Dokes could get his act together and get into shape, he'd probably become someone to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division, as he proved he could be when he stopped Evander Holyfield.

Frank Tate won by unanimous decision against the hopelessly outclassed 'Irish' Chris Walsh. Tate dominated and it wasn't competitive in the least. The scores were 99-90 twice, and 100-89. Tate needs to now step up in class to be tested.

John David Jackson won by split decision over eight rounds against Shinji Takehara. The scores were 77-75 [twice] to Jackson, and 77-76, to Takehara. It was a close, competetive contest, with Jackson boxing and Takehara trying to rough it up in close.

In the opener, heavyweight prospect Oliver McCall made it three wins out of three when he brutalized opponent Derek Banks, forcing the referee to stop the one sided contest at 2.50 of the third when Banks was no longer fighting back and McCall was landing punch after punch unanswered. Banks had been down earlier in the round from a vicous uppercut.

Lewis is my all-time favorite fighter, I was glad to see him win. He is prone to the one punch knock out, he better watch what he says to those top ranked heavies. When can we look forward to Tyson/Holmes? Getting a little edgy here..lol
