Same guy. Lots of stiffs/weak opposition.

Are you using the 6 post prime rating for Cob Castro?

Prime 10, with a great chin. Surprising result, I had thought Cob Castro would have this belt for years. He'll get a re-match eventualy, so I would guess that things will be different next go-round.

I just had the weirdest thing that I've yet to see happen.

At 2:49 of the first round, the referee calls an end to the round and heads to a corner. Round over. Eleven seconds early.

I suppose that happens from time to time, but generally the referee is not keeping time and does not signal the end of a round. He waits for the bell and then breaks the action, sometimes the ring is equipped with corner lights that tell him how close the end is.

Anyway, that seemed pretty weird to me.

Here's the text from that incident:

This was the end of round one, round two started without further mention of it.

Has anyone else run across this one?

Yep, I've seen it a few times heck I had it happen to me last night. Just another of the nice little touches thrown in the game.

Seen it probably 4 times, once it actually made a sinificant difference saving a Fighter from a possible TKO....like Romy said, one of those things that really make this game exceptional.

December Round-Up

Barbosa Scales Mountain
Melbourne, Australia: After defending his NABF Super Middleweight Title an amazing 15 times in just over three years, Brian 'The Bull' Barbosa finally received another crack at the REC World title. His lone loss to-date came at the hands of South African Dingaan Thobela almost two years ago when the two fought for the inaugural world crown. The current champion, ever-tough Shannan Taylor (34-2-0), took the belt from Thobela and has defended three times (twice more over Thobela). The first six frames saw Taylor take advantage of Barbosa's rushing style as he picked the Puerto Rican apart with his jab and countered well en route to claiming four of the six. Both men seemed a bit tired and took a few rounds off which were declared draws on all cards. A roundhouse right from the Bull caught Taylor flush and drew blood in the ninth breathing life into Barbosa's legs as he pursued and won that round as well as the tenth handily. The eleventh opened ominously for Taylor, the cut opened in the ninth had begun to bleed heavily again. Barbosa picked away at it while the Champ tried in vain to cover. The flow continued to worsen and the fight was waived off after the second stoppage and visit from the ringside doc. The partisan Melbourne crowd howled with displeasure but the REC World title passed to Barbosa who now claims an impressive 44-1-0 record.

December Round-Up

Thirty-nine Seconds in Pretoria
Pretoria, South Africa: That's all it took for Gurcharan 'Guru' Singh to take back the crown that was torn away from him earlier in the year. Singh had been the REC World Cruiserweight Champion until he was knocked out by Piet Crous in Bombay. Since then, Signh has restored his standing by taking the APBC belt from Tony Fuliliani and scoring a tough decision win over Saul Montana. Crous, meanwhile, made a superb defense over current English and former world champion Bruce Scott. Both fighters came into the bout fit and ready with all in attendance expecting a great tussle for the strap. The bell sounded and Crous threw one half-hearted jab before sliding to a neutral corner. Singh pursued and landed devastating cross that the Champ never saw coming. Crous folded into a pile of bones and the count was done at the 0:39 mark. The crowd was more stunned than angry, not really knowing what had happened. Crous' corner claimed that a sudden flash from the crowd caught their man's eye and did him in. No matter, Singh has a 33-3-0 record and the REC belt in hand. The stunning defeat leaves Crous with a 35-3-0 mark.

As an aside:

Some time ago (In a thread started by Cap, I believe) I mentioned that if you set up your groups and organizations a certain way, you could get three levels of simultaneous rankings.

The post above is an example of this, the world, regional and minor rankings all contain common fighters but are copied directly from the game. I did not have to fiddle with changing the group on certain fighters to get them in the proper three levels of rankings.

It does have limitations. A fighter can only be ranked by one regional body and one minor body at a time.

Also, the minor rankings only require 10 bouts as opposed to 20(world) and 15(regional). You can get a peek at some of the talent coming along in the heavyweight division by viewing them, especially the British Empire rankings.

Good stuff as always Chris, the Cricket addition is neat, though I have to admit I have a limited understanding of the game (Embarrassing to admit being British and all)

It will be interesting to see how the Baseballers do, also let me be the first to lobby for a World Title shot for Davey Kotey

Well, at 21-0-0, ranked number one in Africa and number four in the world - I'd say that he'll get his chance sooner rather than later.

Thanks Lee

"Hame on Rye for Caballero" -

So Cob Castro - he is a very substandard "4" as a flyweight in the game. In your opinion, is this a bad rating (a la Chionoi), or was he that much worse (10-4) when he climbed from JFly to Fly?

I don't have much of an opinion on Cob Castro, I believe the rating at JFLY came from the Trunzos once upon a time. Another guy though that I think they may have short-changed a bit was Venice Borkorsor (sp?) - At fly, he was topnotch losing only one fight (early) and claiming the world title. Above fly, he was average (16-7). The old rating for him was just at fly and looked like they had contemplated his so-so career above flyweight when doing it.

With Chionoi, my interest goes back to high school when I took a liking to him simply because of his interesting name Later, I found that his name wasn't really anything special by Thai standards but what a great little fighter!

Ambush in Progresso: Keb Baas Stuns Arce!
Progresso, Mexico: Jorge Arce (24-4-0) had an easy defense of his Mexican Jr Flyweight crown in the form of Juan Alfonso Keb Baas (13-1-0). Arce was expected to make short work of the less experienced opponent and looked to do just that as he bloodied and battered Keb Baas for eight rounds. Acre stung his victim repeatedly with piston-like jabs and ripped at him with hard rights scoring two knock downs along the way. With Keb Bass hopelessly behind on the cards, it seemed like only a matter of time before Travieso ended the misery. Mid way through the ninth however, a Keb Bass uppercut from in close found its perfect mark. Arce, momentarily stunned, could do nothing to defend against the blistering combination that came next collapsing him into a heap on the canvas. A full ten count was issued but it was over at one making the unlikely Juan Alfonso Keb Baas the new Mexican Jr Flyweight king.

Myrthyr Matchstick Victorious in Spain

Murcia, Spain: Welsh champion Johnny Owen (17-0-0) and former European champ Juan Francisco Rodriguez (24-4-1) battled for the European Bantamweight title recently vacated by World Champion John Armour in Spain. It was a good scrap but brutal to score as Owen was the busier fighter while Rodriguez hit harder. Owen's nose was broken in the fifth by stiff cross and by the seventh both of the skeletal Welshman's eyes were swelling as a tell-tale sign of the damage Rodriguez was dishing out. With Rodriguez slightly ahead on the cards and Owen beginning to show signs of fatigue, the hometown crowd began to smell victory and cheered wildly with every move Rodriguez made. All the momentum built by the Spaniard evaporated in the eleventh as Owen suddenly found his legs again and swarmed his opponent bell-to-bell. Rodriguez was staggered early by a cross and hook combination. He tried to get away but Owen met his every move with more leather. At 2:30 the fight's only knock down came as Rodriguez withered under yet another barrage from Owen. He was up at a count of four and managed to stay upright as Owen pounded away for the balance of the round. The round was so dominated by Owen that both judges and referee Stanley Christodoulou scored it 10-7 despite the lone knockdown. Rodriguez gutted out the twelfth round but just barely as Owen took the fight and the European belt with scores of 115-111, 114-112 and 113-112.

Sri Lanka Doubles Up Pakistani Squad

Karachi, Pakistan: Things began bleakly for Sri Lanka as a wicket was taken by Pakistani bowler Fazal Mahmood on the first ball. The day brightened somewhat as Wettimuny and Silva paired up for 52 runs while Mendi and Ratnayeke each scored a half century. The Sri Lankan bowlers faired well giving their squad a slim 288-252 lead after the first innings. Sri Lanka came alive in their second innings scoring 455 behind S.T. Jayasuriya's mammoth 190 before declaring. Pakistan only managed 266 before their tenth wicket fell in the second innings to give Sri Lanka a 225 run win. Sri Lanka also took the second test at Lahore though not in as convincing fashion. Pakistan out scored Sri Lanka 336 to 279 in first innings but only managed a paltry 197 in their seconds to lose by 35 runs. Notable performances included (PAK) Shahid Afridi's 129 and (SRI) R.L. Dias' near century (94).

Test cricket results through January, 1904

(with only one month of tests in the books, some of the stats are a little screwy)
