A sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up Kotey a Triple ChampionCape Coast, Ghana:AABU and All African Featherweight champion Joe Tetteh (31-7-2) and North African champ Davey Kotey (22-0-0) met in Cape Coast with all three belts on the line. Both fighters engaged in a cautious tactical fight as they seemed content to counter and circle rather than to really mix it up. Referee Enzo Montero started a fire under Kotey in the fifth when he deducted a point for hitting Tetteh in the kidneys. Montero hadn't warned the fighter previously to anyone's knowledge but Kotey was furious and began to press the action a bit. He paid a quick price for changing tactics as a Tetteh cross tore open a gash under the charging Kotey's right eye in the sixth. Kotey however began to close in on the AABU champ and built what was believed to be a rather comfortable lead by the tenth round. Tetteh, with his corner telling him he was miles behind, resorted to wildly throwing hay makers over the final two rounds which allowed Kotey to revert to his earlier style and win both of the final rounds with ease thus sealing Tetteh's fate. Judge Woody Kelken scored the bout 114-113 for Tetteh but Juhani Salminen and Raul Valencia saw it 116-112 for Kotey who now owns all three straps. African and Arabian Boxing Union Featherweight Top Ten - 01 February, 1904 Code:
(b) - South African champion

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up A Stinker in MarielMariel, Cuba: Orlando Zulueta defended his Havana Jockey Club Lightweight belt against Charley Lewis (10-1-2) in what was hoped would be a great fight between two young scrappy fighters. Instead, both men spent the whole fight outside only coming in close to clinch. Referee Max Parker Jr. threatened and cajoled all night to no avail as he was unable to get the two to mix it up even briefly. The crowd began booing by the third round and resorted to hurling garbage at the ring by the time ten rounds had been ground out. Parker and Judge Harry Gibbs scored the fight 95-95 while Daniel Bergher Fucs saw fit to hand the stinker of a fight to Zulueta 98-96. The draw kept Zulueta undefeated at 13-0-1 but did little to raise his standing. Havana Jockey Club Lightweight Top Ten - 01 February, 1904 Code:

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up Ferns Rocks BarbaraWichita, Kansas: Rube Ferns (10-0-1) and Johnny Barbara (5-3-3) contested for the vacant Kansas State Welterweight belt. Ferns made short work of the matter ensuring that his State's honor would not go home with the Indiana native. After taking two of the first three rounds, Ferns had Barbara in trouble early in the fourth. A blistering combination wobbled the Hoosier and left him unable to retreat from further attack including the sharp uppercut that felled him at the 2:44 mark. Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up Logan Goes Barry PickingLegaspi, Philippines: South Seas Light-heavyweight champion Luis Logan (13-0-0) had no trouble at all with New Zealander Kevin Barry (9-4-1). Barry looked like a reasonable challenge in the opening rounds but was offering little resistance by the third as Logan's jab found it's way home time and again. With his corner already struggling to contain blood flow from Barry's nose and brow, the end was near. A thunderous hook early in the fourth frame sent Barry down and out ending what had the makings of a long night for the challenger. South Seas Light-Heavyweight Top Ten - 01 February, 1904 Code:
(b) - New Zealand Champion (c) - Asian Federation Champion

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up Valdes Explosive in Title DefenseHavana, Cuba: Nino Valdes (24-0-0) defended his South American Boxing Council Heavyweight crown before a hometown crowd against Isthmus champ Andre Purlette (33-8-1). The bout was short and violent. Valdes nearly ended it in the first as he sent Purlette down at 1:42 with a cross and again at 2:47 with a counter to the ribs. The tough Guyanese weathered the storm and came charging back in the second with a knock down of his own on a thundering uppercut. Purlette continued to surprise in the third and fourth as he stuck his jab well and won both rounds despite being cut badly over the right eye. With his three point lead from the first round now gone, Valdes flew into Purlette in the fifth. The champ backed his opponent into a neutral corner and attacked his mid section brutally. With Purlette trying to protect his bruised ribs, Valdes landed a perfect uppercut that sent him down for a full count. South American Boxing Council Heavyweight Top Ten - 01 February, 1904 Code:
(b) - Brazilian Champion (c) - Isthmus Champion

That sounded like a heck of a fun fight to watch some real fireworks there. Question, in the report you have Andre Purlette as 33-8-1 but in the rankings he's 33-18-1 so which is right.

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up Natal Giant Butchers SlavinDarling Harbor, Australia: Ewart Potgieter vanquished the first of many young bucks eagerly awaiting a shot at his British Empire Heavyweight belt. Australian Frank Slavin came into the bout sporting a nifty 10-0-0 record but could not find a way to get in past Potgieter's long arms. Potgiter was able to score at will as the challenger tried in vain to get inside. A looping hook to the head sent Slavin down for an eight count and nearly out in the third. The fifth round found Slavin with a badly swollen right eye as he hit the canvas again under a withering barrage. By the eighth round the right eye was nearly closed and the left was on it's way. Potgieter had Slavin dead in his sights as he blistered the young Aussie sending him crashing down twice before referee Stanley Christodoulou stepped in to halt the beating. To his credit, Slavin refused to quit but the South African big man was just too much for him this day. British Empire Heavyweight Top Ten - 01 February, 1904 Code:
(b) - Queensland State Champion

Those Kansans from the SOUTHERN part of the state are odd birds, no doubt.

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up Holmes Turns Out LaStarza's LightsNew York, New York: It's been a hard go for Heavyweight Roland LaStarza. In November he suffered a first round knock out at the hands of Zora Folley in a bid for the NABF belt and now he has lost his Metropolitan Athletic Club title to Larry Holmes. The Easton Assassin never let LaStarza up for air as he pounded away from the opening bell. In the first frame, LaStarza was stumbling under a barrage of powerful jabs and thundering uppercuts by the end and already showed signs of swelling in both eyes. By the fourth, his entire face was blown up and blood began flowing from his nose and lips by the fifth. Holmes turned in seven perfect rounds including a sixth round knockdown that came via a hook. It was a miracle that LaStarza lasted into the eighth but he was incapable of getting back into the fight and succumbed to an overhand right at the 1:18 mark. The loss drops LaStarza to 16-4-0 while elevating Holmes to an 11-0-0 record. Metropolitan Athletic Club Heavyweight Top Ten - 01 February, 1904 Code:
