Judge a man not by the height of his pant hem but but by the content of his character!
(Had a good tussle for the Kansas HW title last month too. Angus Snyder took a split decision from Ralph Brooks, but I didn't do a blurb on it.)

But no, there are a few good southern Kansas boys as well. I'm sure Scot wears his trousers at roughly the same height I do. Of course, I don't use suspenders, but different bites for different likes... ![]()

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue II | 01 February, 1904 January Round-Up USA Squad Receives Rude WelcomePolo Grounds, New York City: The United States Squad received a taste of what its foray into International Test Cricket will look like in the coming year as New Zealand came to New York and demolished the collection of former base ballers. Behind HG Vivian's 122, New Zealand scored 346 in their first innings and 326 in their seconds. The NZ Bowlers were masterful in holding the anemic Americans to 171 and a putrid 116. The second test at Dillon Field in Hartford saw a slight improvement in batsman-ship as the Americans managed to score 448 with captain Ty Cobb notching the squad's first half century at 84. Unfortunately, 448 wasn't nearly enough as the Kiwis blasted 746 and declared after only seven wickets in their seconds. The lone bright spot for the Americans was bowler Cy Young who seemed to be the only converted pitcher on the squad that demonstrated any skill at bowling. Young saw action for 98 overs at 12-240 for the pair of test matches. Test cricket results through January, 1904 (with only one month of tests in the books, some of the stats are a little screwy)

Bit of a drubbing there for the US. Kinda like how us English are feeling at the moment.
Continue to love the REC universe. What boxers qualify to fight for the Metropolitan Athletic Club title? I see their mainly from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, New Jersey and most Eastern Seaboard states are allowed to battle for the Maritime belt. There is some overlap and I often fudge based on numbers available.

A sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue III | 01 March, 1904 February Round-Up Russell Ends Mata's DominanceValencia, Spain: Jorge Mata has held the European Strawweight title since 15 October, 1902 as well as the Prussian and Spanish belts. His only competition in the region has been Mickey Cantwell and Rocky Lin who currently holds the world title. With the recent influx of Australian and Asian straws who have relocated to England, it was only a matter of time before he received a serious challenge to his dominance over the division. Jack Russell earned a title shot after compiling a 14-0-1 record and made the best of it. The fireworks started early as Mata backed Russell into a corner with a few hard shots in the first. He missed wide with a hook and Russell threw a perfect counter to his head that sent the champ down for a count of five. Russell put Mata down again in the fourth with a straight right. Ever-tough, Mata climbed up from the second knock down and began to claw his way back into the fight. The champion dominated the sixth through tenth rounds but it wasn't quite enough to earn the decision. Judge Jorge Tripodi scored the fight 114-112 for Mata but Sam Zive and referee Tony Kettlewell turned in cards for Russell of 114-113 and 114-112 handing the European crown to the Aussie and dropping Mata to a 35-5-0 record. European Boxing Federation Strawweight Top Ten - 01 March, 1904 Code:
(b) - REC World Champion * (c) - Prussian and Spanish Champion (d) - German Champion (e) - English Champion * - The REC allows World Champions to be ranked by other bodies but does not allow them to fight for other titles during their reign.

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue III | 01 March, 1904 February Round-Up Zapata Ends Sandoval's Unbeaten StreakDavid, Panama: Former SABC Jr Flyweight champ Hilario Zapata is making all the points he can while holding the lessor Isthmus Boxing Federation title. For his second defense he faced the previously unbeaten Nicaraguan Lee Sandoval. Sandoval bloodied Zapata's nose in the second and had him on the run for much of the fourth and fifth until Zapata started landing some solid blows in the sixth. Zapata managed to slow Sandoval down with several straight rights and took the last four rounds handily. In the ninth, it appeared that Sandoval would go down when he was blasted with four successive shots that left his arms dangling at his sides but the bell sounded before Zapata could finish the job. Referee Harold Valan scored it 98-93 while Adrio Zanoni and Armando Garcia both saw it 97-94 for Zapata who improves to 27-1-0. We undoubtedly will hear more from Sandoval in the near future who falls to 18-1-2 with the loss. Isthmus Boxing Federation Jr Flyweight Top Ten - 01 March, 1904 Code:

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue III | 01 March, 1904 February Round-Up Clark Grabs Empire Belt on DQMelrose, Scotland: The British Empire Flyweight title fight between Elky Clark (11-0-0) and veteran champ Steve Muchoki (26-3-1) ended with a quick and controversial call. After three rounds of brisk action and Clark slightly ahead on the cards, the Scotsman threw a whip-like backhand at Muchoki after he had absorbed a nasty cross. The backhand missed but incensed Muchoki who sunk a right hand deep into the groin of the spinning Clark. Elky dropped to one knee in agony while referee Jerry McKenzie stepped in and waived the fight off. He deemed the low blow to be intentional and immediately disqualified Muchoki. If Muchoki requests a rematch it will almost certainly be granted by the BBBoC. British Empire Flyweight Top Ten - 01 March, 1904 Code:
(b) - Irish Champion (c) - Canadian Champion (d) - Rhodesian Champion (e) - Scottish Champion (f) - All-Africa Champion (g) - Victorian State Champion (h) - South African Champion

A backhand, huh? I saw that once and the fighter on the receiving end looked more confused than hurt.
Great stuff as always Chris, that would have been a great fight to see. Wait, I did see it, they called it Bowe vs. Golota (1 or 2, take your pick). LOL. |

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue III | 01 March, 1904 February Round-Up Almond: Out of NowhereYellowknife, Canada: Art Hafey (19-2-0) defended his Maritime title in the most unlikely of places, Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. His opponent was Frankie Almond who brought a mediocre 23-9-0 record to the Red Dog Saloon where nearly 400 patrons had assembled. The bout went as expected for six rounds with Hafey dominating and nearly carrying Almond at times. Mid way through the seventh, Almond opened a nasty cut over Hafay's right eye with a slashing cross that brought a stop in the action as the ringside doc had a brief look. Almond took full advantage as Hafey attempted to protect the cut by punishing the champ's exposed mid section. A walloping shot to the ribcage in the eighth sent Hafey down and out to the amazement of the assembled locals. Despite being up on the cards 68-65 (twice) and 69-65, Hafey passed the Maritime crown to Almond. Maritime Featherweight Top Ten - 01 March, 1904 Code:
(b) - North American Boxing Federation Champion (c) - Charter Oak Champion

Another sneak peek pilfered from the editor's desk by Chalky the Newsboy ![]() GLASGOW PICAYUNE Sporting Edition | Volume V, Issue III | 01 March, 1904 February Round-Up Ahmed at Long Last!Lahore, Pakistan: Pakistani lightweight Tanveer Ahmed (69-8-3) has spent years overcoming his poor public image. He opened his career with fifty victories over bums off the street in Pakistan and the Middle East earning a much maligned AABU title shot. After Justin Juuko blasted him in that fight, Ahmed was widely viewed as a fraud. Since then, he has gained considerable respect as he fought Juuko to a draw, lost by late round stoppage in another AABU title fight with Ray Adigun and a world title fight with Hirsch Demsitz. He also has won and defended the North African and Arabian titles. Now, he has made the most of a fourth opportunity at the African and Arabian Boxing Union belt with a unanimous decision over Ray Adigun (37-6-1). Ahmed fought a cautious battle, building a comfortable lead in the early going. He worked from the outside and avoided Adigun's right hand that did him in when they last met. By the ninth round, Adigun was exhausted and ready to be taken. Rather than coast to sure victory, Ahmed moved in and pounded away over the final rounds buckling the champ's knees a few times while taking a number of hard shots himself. The decision was closer than it otherwise may have been due to the risks Ahmed took over the final rounds but he thrilled the crowd who joined with him in celebrating his long awaited prize in winning a major title. Even if he loses the belt in short order, Tanveer Ahmed has finally silenced his critics. African and Arabian Boxing Union Lightweight Top Ten - 01 March, 1904 Code:
(b) - British Empire Champion, South African Champion
