Folley Edges Trammell

Akron, Ohio: When Zora Folley and Jack Trammell met six months ago for the NABF strap they fought a tough battle that ended with a late round stoppage. Folley played it safe on the second go-round working from the outside as he picked off Trammell's punches, circled and looked for openings. The strategy worked well for three rounds but Trammell began to get inside by the fourth and the fight was on. The two mixed it up well for the balance of the fight but never did any serious damage save a few in-close hooks. It was a beautiful tactical fight that the good fans of Akron seemed to appreciate. The score was as all in attendance assumed it would be - razor close. Thai judge Vichai Ingpunjalarp scored it 117-115 for Folley while Ohio's own David Iccoabucci gave it to their boy Trammell 115-113. Judge Ferdinand Estrella turned in the decisive 116-112 card for Folley who retains his title a fourth time.

Boza-Edwards in a Walk

Gafsa, Tunisia: Jr Lightweight Cornelius Boza-Edwards had his first real test last month when he gutted out a split decision over veteran Jean-Marc Renard (19-6-3) and now he holds his first title. The fast-climbing Ugandan met North African Professional Boxers Association champion Kamel Bou Ali in what should have been another tough test. After briefly sizing-up his opponent, Edwards stabbed a few shots into Ali's chest and found a quick home for a tremendous hook to the head. Bou Ali stumbled backward and was swarmed with a combination and two devastating straight rights to the head. While Richard Flaherty counted to ten, Bou Ali tried to get his legs under him but couldn't. At 2:52 of round one without having taken a single punch, Cornelius Boza-Edwards was crowned as the new NAPBA champion.

Ahmed Defends

Lungi, Sierra Leone: Pakistani lightweight Tanveer Ahmed was called a fraud when he won 49 straight, he was called a bum when he was bombed by Justin Juuko in his first bid for the AABU title. But now, with a good showing in a world title fight, the Arabian and North African titles in hand and his decision over Ray Adigun for the AABU belt in February, his place in the boxing world is much more stable. He chose the only easy target available for his first major title defense and who can blame the lad with the landscape that lays ahead of him. Kid Trembles sports a record of 48-13-4 but his only win of distinction came against Sauveur Benamou.

Both men entered the ring in top condition and ready to fight but Trembles was in trouble quickly. Ahmed rained blows on the Kid at the 1:52 mark that sent him flat on his back. He struggled to his feet at the count of eight and was greeted with more leather from the champ. Out of desperation, Trembles dug a hook into Ahmed's groin bringing an immediate warning from referee Carlos Padilla. When the bell rang, Trembles didn't look like he would make it back to his stool. To his credit, Trembles persevered and came back to make somewhat of a fight of it. The Kid took a few rounds but tasted a ton of leather as evidenced by the telltale swelling in his face. He was dropped again in the tenth but somehow made to the final bell. The scorecards all went Ahmed's way 116-111, 117-109 and 119-110. Tanveer had to be a little disapointed that he was not able to take Trembles out early; his next opponent will be of a higher caliber.

Way to go Tanveer Ahmed. His has easily been the best story throughout the the REC to me. I love that Ahmed is now the respected champion while Juuko is just some guy quite the reversal from were they were when they fought.

He's been fun. He didn't have all that poor of a career in real life either - I just wish that I could find a photo of him. There is a Tanveer Ahmed that plays soccer for Pakistan who's picture is everywhere but he is about ten years younger than this Tanveer Ahmed.

Firpo Destroys D'Elia

Mar del Plata, Argentina: Former SABC Heavyweight champion Luis Firpo made short work of Domingo D'Elia in his latest defense of his Argentine crown. Firpo coasted through three rounds without breaking a sweat before smashing D'Elia into submission in the fourth. A barrage or jabs and straight rights had D'Elia in trouble early. Firpo chased his prey all over the ring before cornering him at the 1:46 mark and sending home a thunderous hook that folded the challenger into a heap. Firpo is getting a bit long in the tooth but hopes to climb back into the SABC picture after suffering tough KO losses to Nino Valdes and current world champ Teofilo Stevenson in 1903. He may even have his eye on one last shot at the REC World Title.

Hey, Connie. When you do those "coded" portions of a post, do you create it first in something like Notepad or do you just type it into your post? When I try the latter, the formatting is messed up and I have to edit quite a bit.

I have seen others talk about putting these things in notepad first and then transferring them. That has never worked for me.

The output is admittedly quite a mess at first but I have gotten fairly accustomed to it and it takes very little time to type each one up from scratch. If you can figure how to accomplish this with less pain, I'll break out the big listening devices.

Some strong competition in the NABF heavyweight division. Folley, Johnson, Baer, Williams, and Quarry. Excellent stuff.

With names like Holmes, Sullivan, Tyson, Corbett and Jeffries just a few fights away from being ranked it'll be stronger yet in short order.

Dynamite Nearly Blows It All

Los Angeles, California: The clock nearly struck midnight for West Coast Cinderella man Dynamite Jackson. Jackson took the California State Heavyweight title last August with a stunning fourth round stoppage of Max Baer. After compiling a 3-0-1 record against putrid competition since, Jackson took on his first challenger in the form of journeyman Pio Pico (18-29-3) who doctors confirmed did indeed posses a pulse prior to fight time. Pico took the fight to Jackson from the onset and managed to conduct himself well enough to win despite his propensity for catching nearly everything Jackson threw. In fact, the lowly Pico would be champ as we speak were it not for what can most kindly be described as a mental lapse in the fifth and sixth rounds.

In a fight that he was clearly winning at the time, Pico decided to throw not one but two shots south of the border in the fifth. The second wayward blow brought a point deduction from referee Lou Moret. The sixth round went much as the first five had gone with Pico charging and eating leather but getting the better of most exchanges. Inexplicably, he started hitting Jackson with his shoulders in close. Moret warned him once, then twice with a word of caution that he would have to take another point if it continued. Within thirty seconds Pico was at it again and true to his word, Moret deducted another point. Pico hung his head in disgust and embarrassment when the cards were read. Judge Oscar Oppen had it 95-93 for Pico while Guiseppe Quartarone scored it 95-94 for Jackson; without the deductions, Pico would have been the winner. Judge Robert Watson, seemingly watching another fight, had it 97-91 for Jackson proving that there's one in every crowd. Jackson's performance against the likes of Mr Pico bodes ill for his chances of remaining champion for long. A quick scan of the top ten finds ten men far superior to Pico.

A Masterpiece For Pep

Quebec City, Canada: NABF Featherweight champ Willie Pep made his first defense since taking the belt from Jackie Graves last fall and put on a show in the process. Canadian Champion Pete DeGrasse was taken to school as Pep circled and peppered the challenger landing shots to DeGrasse's at an eye-popping 40:9 ratio. DeGrasse never had a chance as Pep toyed with him all night piling up the points and leaving the Canadian's face swollen and his body covered with welts. Pep's only real threat was his own propensity to foul. His two career losses came via DQ in bouts that he was winning handily and this night was no different. Referee Jay Nady warned Pep for low blows, hitting on the break, using his shoulders and a host of other infractions, it was actually surprising that only one point was deducted throughout the match. In the end, Pep took a decisive victory despite his actions with the cards showing 119-110, 119-109 and 119-111 all for the NABF champ.

Holmes Smokes Cooper

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: It has been a rapid climb for heavyweight Larry Holmes. Since his pro debut fifteen months ago, the Easton PA native has compiled a 13-0-0 record that includes an eighth round KO over Roland LaStarza for the Metropolitan Athletic Club belt. Following a quick tune up on Andy Sabella, Holmes made his first defense this past month against wily veteran Bert Cooper (30-17-2). Holmes was cautious but controlled most of the first seven rounds with his highly effective jab. The third was a bit of an odd round as Cooper had a point deducted for head butting and Holmes also lost a point for a retaliatory low blow. Cooler heads prevailed and the two were back to business by the fourth. The eighth round brought all the fireworks that the crowd had come to witness. Fifty seconds in, Cooper walked right into a hook that he never saw coming. The veteran crumbled like stale bread and was barely able to stand at a count of eight. Referee Richard Flaherty waved the fighters on which was the last thing Cooper needed. He wobbled forward toward Holmes who sized him up with a stiff jab and drove a cross home that melted Cooper into the canvas for a second time. Flaherty gave a full ten count while Cooper stared into the lights above the ring wondering where he was. With a few more victories over the summer, Holmes should be able to insert himself into the thick of an already tough NABF heavyweight scene.

There is some nice talent in that division. Any chance that we will see a Holmes vs Tyson bout for the Metropolitan Athletic Club belt. That would be a huge fight.

Not a snowball's chance in...

Holmes will move on and clean out Folley at the NABF and move on to the world stage. Tyson will always be just behind him career wise until they both are ranked internationaly - then the big one comes.

Of course something unexpected will blow that all up, but that's my general plan at the moment.

Of course something unexpected will blow that all up, but that's my general plan at the moment.
Ah, alright. Well at least your preparing yourself for when your plan gets blown to hell.

April Round-Up

No Contest Forces Summer Repeat

Mariel, Cuba: This was not what Omelio Agramonte had in mind when he set out to make his first defense of the Havana Jockey Club Heavyweight belt that he earned in January. Agramonte had the better of veteran opponent Jose Ribalta (40-19-3) in the opening round when an errant noggin bob busted open his forehead. The bleeding was profuse but the round continued with Agramonte notching a 10-9 lead on the cards. With his forehead still seeping blood, the champ did his best to cover up but even the slightest of jabs from Ribalta brought forth a geyser of crimson. The bout was halted at 2:53 of the second round and declared a no contest. The disappointed Agramonte maintains his unblemished record at 11-0-0 and will be forced to try again with Ribalta sometime before the end of August according to the Havana Jockey Club.

I don't know how you keep track of all those title belts, Chris. It would make me all pretty quickly.

Was Ribalta ever the Champ? He's had three title shots in the last four years.
