17th April 1889 - Chicago
USBA Lightweight Final Eliminators
Jimmy Carroll (22-4-1) TKO9 Andy Bowen (13-8) Carroll made it two from two against Bowen in typically exciting fashion. Bowen was on the deck twice before referee Aaron stepped in during the 9th with Carroll hitting Bowen at will. Carroll was a mile ahead on the cards at the time. George Lavigne (19-3) TKO8 Jake Karcher (6-5) Lavigne once again found himself involved in a classic encounter. After dropping Karcher in the first and coming close to stopping him, lavigne was made to work very hard by Karcher for his crack at the USBA crown. Karcher turned the screws on Lavigne in the fifth and had Lavigne on the canvas twice, he was one good punch away from ending the fight. Lavigne as ever fought back and finally got on top of Karcher in the eighth and with 15 seconds left in the round Aaron decided that Karcher was unable to defend himself. Lavigne was a couple of points ahead at the end of the seventh. Lavigne will now meet Carroll for the vacant USBA Lightweight Title next month. |

17th April 1888 - Chicago
WBF World Bantamweight Title Final Eliminators
Tommy 'Spider' Kelly (15-1) TKO9 Johnny Murphy (10-1) In a classic boxer against slugger fight, a cut over Murphy's right eye robbed Murphy of a chance to progress. Kelly had started slowly but finally got his jab working and in the fifth round scored the only knockdown of the fight. The scorecards had the fighters even at the end of the eighth round. Nunc Wallace (9-1-1) UD12 Abe Willis (6-3) In stark contrast to the other Bantamweight Eliminator, Nunc Wallace turned in a dominating one-sided performance to run away with the bout. Willis faded early as he was unable to cope with Wallace's jab. All three judges had Wallace the winner by 117/111. Wallace will meet Kelly for the right to become the first World Bantamweight Champion. |

23rd April 1889 - Madison Square Garden
HW - Jack Boylan (5-10) UD10 Jack Welsh (7-11-3)
BW - George Dixon (17-3) UD10 Joe Gates (1-6) Solid comeback by Dixon after injury MW - Young Mitchell (11-0) TKO6 Jim McHugh (2-10) MW - Jack Dempsey (15-2) KO3 John P Clow (9-10) Dempsey has nemesis LaBlanche in his sights. WBF Featherweight World Title Final Eliminators. Cal McCarthy Drew12 Frank Murphy In a largely tactical affair, only a big last round from McCarthy enabled a big last round enabled the American to achieve a draw. Both fighters started well but the fight fizzled out with neither fighter seemingly prepared to risk enough. A rematch has been scheduled for June. Young Griffo (20-2) DISQ5 Solly Smith (7-1) Australian Griffo advanced to a crack at the inaugural WBF World Featherweight Title in unsatisfactory circumstances, when Smith was disqualified for a blatant low blow. Griffo was ahead by 3 points on all cards at the end of round 4. Griffo will meet the winner of the McCarthy V Murphy rematch for the right to fight for the World Featherweight crown. |

WBF to stage Pro/Amateur Tournament
The International Olympic Committee has approached the WBF and asked them to host a Pro/Am Tournament next year, with a view to Boxing taking it's place on the Olympic stage at some further date.
It is believed that each country will stage internal trials with the relevant Champions being asked to represent their countries in the tournament. It has been proposed that the following weight classes will be up for grabs. Heavyweight Middleweight Welterweight Lightweight Featherweight Bantamweight The bouts will be 3 round affairs. Current professionals will be invited to take part, along with seasoned amateurs, although there will be no monetary value to the winners. Rumours are circulating that current retired WBF Commissioner John L Sullivan may come out of retirement to take part in the event. The WBF stated that they will make a further announcement in November. |

14th May 1889 - Madison Square Garden
FW - Solly Smith (8-1) TKO4 Jack Kelly (0-2)
MW - Young Mitchell (12-0) KO9 Mike Boden (2-7-2) MW - Jack Fogarty (14-3-1) KO9 Charles Bixamos (5-6-1) WW - Charles Gleason (9-2) MD10 Paddy Duffy (13-6-2) HW - James Corbett (15-1) TKO9(Cuts) Herbert Slade (1-8) Vacant USBA Lightweight Title George Lavigne (19-3-1) Draw Jimmy Carroll (22-4-2) Lavigne must feel slightly agrieved that he is not the new USBA Lightweight Champion. In the first encounter between the pair, Lavigne was on the wrong end of a one sided points loss, but here in their second fight Lavigne changed his tactics. There were no knockdowns in the fight as Carroll found it difficult to land his power punches, whilst Lavigne boxed superbly, particularly in the latter part of the fight when his jab dominated Carroll. Judges Childs and McAlpine had the fight 114 even whilst judge Roche gave the fight 116-112 Lavigne. The pair are likely to meet again in July. |

20th May 1889 - Royal Albert Hall
BW - Billy Plimmer (3-0) UD10 Joe Gates (1-7)
Bob Fitzsimmons (18-6) UD10 Pete McCoy (8-9-2) Vacant EBU Heavyweight Title Peter Maher (11-3) UD12 Jim Fell (5-9-2) Maher added the European belt to his Commonwealth title at Heavyweight. Fell was down twice in the fight and was a wide margin points loser. As was the case after winning the Commonwealth title, Maher 'called out' ex Heavyweight World Champion Bob Fitzsimmons. Maher stated that for the right purse he would be willing to lay both his titles on the line. Inaugural British & Commonwealth Bantamweight Title George Dixon (18-3) UD12 Walter Croot (9-2) Dixon became the first holder of the British & Commonwealth Bantamweight Title by way of a wide margin points victory. Dixon threatened to overrun Croot and scored the only knockdown of the fight in the 8th round, strangely enough thereafter he took his foot of the pedal and coasted to victory. Holding both the British & Commonwealth and USBA title could prove to be a logistical problem for Dixon, however some experts believe he will have the World Title belt around his waist in the near future. |

27th May 1889 - Rushcutters Bay
Inaugural OPBF Heavyweight Title
Frank Slavin (9-10) KO5 Billy 'Australian' Smith (11-5) Frank Slavin became the inaugural OPBF Heavyweight Champion in dramatic circumstances, Slavin was down in the third and fourth stanza's before knocking out Smith with a big right cross. Inaugural OPBF Middleweight Title Jim Hall (4-6) KO5 Dan Creedon (11-1) Dan Creedon's unbeaten record was smashed by Hall. The knockout came from nowhere, with Creedon dominating and coming close to stopping his opponent, hall landed a huge right cross as Creedon went in for the kill. The 'Golden Boy' of Australian boxing was unable to beat the count and the belt went to Hall. |

18th June 1889 - Chicago
FW - Jack Skelly (8-1) TKO8(Cuts) Walter Edgerton (6-4)
LW - Patsy Kerrigan (5-7-1) TechDraw Dan Custy (5-6-1) WW - Billy Myer (19-7) KO5 Dan Murphy (5-6-1) MW - Pete McCoy (9-9-2) UD10 Dominic McCaffrey (16-3) Disasterous result for McCaffrey, who was lining up a World title bid. WBF World Featherweight Final Eliminator Cal McCarthy (13-2-1) MDec12 Frank Murphy (8-3-2) In another desperately close encounter between the pair, McCarthy pulled through by way of a majority decision. An 11th round knockdown, after a bodyshot, proved to be the deciding factor in a very even contest, each fighter had already been down once before in the fight. McCarthy will now meet Young Griffo to decide who will become the inaugural Featherweight World Champion. WBF World Lightweight Title Billy Dacey (13-7-1) TKO8 Billy Frazier (7-8) In an exciting first defence Billy Dacey simply had too much power for the veteran Frazier. The writing was on the wall from as early as the third round when Frazier's right eye became swollen, after this Duffy found him at will. Frazier was on the canvas twice in the 8th stanza before referee McAlpine had seen enough. Dacey will face a much stiffer task when he defends against former World Champion Jack McAuliffe in October. |

BW - Billy Plimmer (4-0) KO6 Paddy Snow (3-10-1)
MW - Young Mitchell (13-0) KO2 WC McClellan (9-12-1) USBA Bantamweight Title George Dixon (19-3) TKO4(Cuts) Jockey Sloane (3-8) Dixon makes a quickfire defence of his title. USBA Heavyweight Title James Corbett (16-1) UD12 George Godfrey (13-12) Thirteen years the senior, Canadian Godfrey put up an excellent performance against Corbett. In a fight which was never a 'crowd pleaser', Godfrey started brightly but was unable to to get inside the defending Champions defence. Corbett was a wide margin points victor. |

7th July 1889 - Rushcutters Bay
Billy McCarthy (8-1) TKO7(Cuts) Jack Langdon (1-11)
Dan Creedon (12-1) KO7 Paddy Norton (0-12) Facile victories for Creedon and McCarthy. British & Commonwealth Welterweight Title Tom Meadows (9-3) KO12 Jem Carney (16-8) With only 30 seconds left in the final round, Meadows delivered a perfect right hook to end the brave challenge of veteran Carney. If the first fight between the pair was a close run affair, this was a walkover with the defending champion dominating from the start and had Carney on the canvas twice before he was counted out. Meadows was a street ahead on all three cards, he is now likely to look for a fight against a top 5 ranked opponent. WBF World Heavyweight Title Peter Jackson (19-1) TKO7 Steve O'Donnell (7-5) If Jackson was lethargic in his most recent defence against Charles Hadley, he made up for it with a dominant one sided display against his fellow countryman O'Donnell. Jackson was on top from the opening bell in the 10th defence of his title. |

Was Carney at prime? Carney is a 10 and Meadows a 6 at least in my db. Granted Carney is 18-15 in my uni so he isn't a strong 10, but I'd like to think he'd handle Meadows.
Meadows is pre-prime club fighter at 7-3 right now in my uni. |

He is one of those 'fighters' that I sort of like, he's been around pretty much from the word 'go' in my uni. He won the Lightweight World Title twice. Meadows is on a run, I've been trawling through the web trying to find a picture of him, but to no avail. Last edited by Tosti; 02-01-2006 at 12:49 PM. |

13rd July - MSG
FW - Solly Smith (9-1) UD10 Frank Maguire (1-7)
HW - George Godfrey (14-12) UD10 Jake Kilrain (11-12-2) WW - Jack C McGee (15-5) TKO7 Billy Myer (19-8) Myer is dramatically stopped in the 7th after dominating the earlier rounds LW - Bobby Dobbs (12-0) TKO5 Andy Bowen (13-9) Dobbs had no problem with this move up in class. After finding his rythm in the early rounds he 'riped' into Bowen in the 4th round and carried on through the 5th until referee Edwards had seen enough. USBA Middleweight Title WBF World Middleweight Title Final Eliminator Jack Dempsey (Holder)(16-2) KO11 Jack Fogarty (14-4-1) Dempsey made a conclusive defence of his USBA Title and therefore ended the 10 fight unbeaten run of Jack Fogarty. The holder was on top from the opening bell and dominated throughout. In the eleventh round Fogarty was out on his feet by the time Dempsey landed a huge right cross which put an end to proceedings. Dempsey held a clear advantage on all cards at the time of the stoppage, and will now meet LaBlanche for the World crown, LaBlanche is responsible for the two defeats on Dempsey's record. WBF World Middleweight Title George LaBlanche (Holder)(14-4-1) KO14 Pete McCoy (9-10-2) LaBlanche made a 5th successful defence of his world crown in his normal 'crowd pleasing' fashion. McCoy had already hit the canvas twice before a big uppercut from 'the Marine' ended the fight. LaBlanche used his uppercut to great effect throughout the bout and was comfortably ahead on all cards when the bout ended. LaBlanche will now meet No.1 Contender and old foe Jack Dempsey in his next defence, probably in November. |
