15th August 1892 - Madison Square Garden
LW - Jack Hopper(11-6) TKO5 George Dawson (13-2-1)
Dawson looked to be slugging his way to a stoppage win before Hopper turned the tables on him. Although suffering from severe swelling around the left eye, the American caught Dawson with a right hook at the start of the fifth round and the onslaught began. LW - Jack Everhardt(11-1) TKO9 Jabez White(7-8) White was never in contention. The only surprising thing was the amount of time it took Everhardt to finish his out of condition opponent. Everhardt scored his second knockdown of the bout in the penultimate round, giving the pernickety Goddard no option but to end the contest. LW - George 'Elbows' McFadden(8-1) SD10 Danny Duane(8-3) With three seconds left on the clock Duane sprawled to the canvas. McFadden(below left) had landed the fight's only knockdown blow, a right hook to the body, and in doing so secured a split decision. It is not hard to imagine these two novices squaring up for an American title. MW - George LaBlanche(22-8-1) TKO5 Harry Peppers(4-8) The ex World Champ had far too much for Peppers. On top from the start LaBlanche(below right) landed a big right hook in the third round for the only knockdown of the bout. With the Canadian veteran landing heavy hooks to the head and body referee Elliot called time. |

23rd August 1892 - Chicago Coliseum
LW - Andy Bowen(18-10) TKO8 Austin Gibbons(10-10-1)
Gibbons looks in need of a break. He looked like he needed a good meal as he entered the ring, however as always he fought his heart out. It took a withering barrage from Bowen to end the contest, with Gibbons ahead on two of the judges cards. LW - Dal Hawkins(10-6-1) TKO3 Mike Daly(9-11-1) Daly stopped on the three knockdown rule. MW - Isadore Strauss(5-7) TKO6(Cuts) Billy McCarthy(17-3-1) The bookmakers didn't even bother pricing this one up, they were wrong. Strauss scored a huge upset by stopping his top ranked opponent. McCarthy was in rhythm and looked to be coasting to a straightforward victory when Strauss landed a grazing right cross. Blood immediately flowed into the Aussie's right eye, the corner did there job for the next six minutes, but when Strauss landed another heavy hook to the injury the decision to stop the bout was a formality. After going so close to winning the World crown in his last fight McCarthy will be devastated. World Lightweight Title Bobby Dobbs(Champion)(24-0) V Jimmy Carroll(#1)(30-5-2) Dobbs makes his fourth title defence. The second meeting of the pair, Dobbs won the previous match on points. Both fighters enter the ring in apparent excellent condition. Rd 1 - A tentative start from Dobbs(below) allows his foe to land some solid right crosses. Carroll(10-9) Rd 2 - Dobbs warms to his task in the last minute of the stanza, landing consecutive hooks to body and head. Carroll however lands a left hook below Dobbs left eye and draws blood, that coould cause problems later for Dobbs. Even (19-19) Rd 3 - Good round for Dobbs. He finds Carroll with four heavy right hands, Carroll ends the round with his back to the ropes. Dobbs (29-28) Rd 4 - Dobbs gets on his bike, he draws Carroll in and lands lightly. Dobbs (39-37) Rd 5 - Carroll dominates the fifth. The last minute of the fight is all his, landing heavily to the body and dominating the ring. Dobbs (48-47) Rd 6 - Good recovery from Dobbs, using his jab he edges the round. Overall the fight has been pretty disappointing, there are some calls from the crowd for more action. Dobbs (58-56) Rd 7 - More action! Dobbs is still trying to keep Carroll at range, to negate his opponents power and to protect his cut, he uses his jab to effect but ships a right hand from the challenger and pulls away from a clinch with his cut reopened. Dobbs (68-65) Rd 8 - Carroll attempts to up the ante, but only plays into Dobbs hands. As he moves in on the Champ he is picked off with ease. Dobbs (78-74) Rd 9 - As he tries to press Dobbs the challenger is nailed with a right cross and stumbles back to his corner, worried that he is playing possum Dobbs moves carefully forward not risking his dominant points advantage. Carroll now has to gamble. Dobbs (88-83) Rd 10 - Better round for Carroll. Two hooks to the ribcage and a right cross to the jaw edge it for him. The cuts under Dobbs left eye has stopped bleeding, whilst there is some pretty nasty swelling under Carroll's right eye. Dobbs (97-93) Rd 11 - Carroll is visibly tiring. He has been chasing Dobbs all night to little effect. Dobbs knows he is clear on the cards and keeps his distance, landing jab after jab. Dobbs shook his right hand at the end of the round, he may have injured it. Dobbs (107-102) Rd 12 - All Dobbs! The challenger trundles forward but looks a spent token. He eats jab after jab and then swallows a vicious right cross. If Dobbs wants to gamble his opponent is there for the taking (117-111) Rd 13 - Carroll continues to press Dobbs, but only a knockout blow is going to see the title change hands, Dobbs is playing safe, finding his foe within ease. Dobbs (127-120) Rd 14 - Carroll's right eye is a mess. He does however win the round, landing two solid hooks, he's fighting on reserve, with his right eye virtually shut. Dobbs (136-130) Rd 15 - A very quiet last round, with both men transgressing the rules, Dobbs coasts home for the final three minutes, he has fielded everything his number one challenger could throw at him and won in a canter. The judges scores....145 to 140, 145 to 140, 145 to 140 All in favor of Bobby Dobbs. Carroll was found wanting and it will now be up to the young guns to end Dobbs perfect record, although Jack McAuliffe may have other ideas. |

14th September 1892 - National Sporting Club, London
BW - Walter Croot(15-5-1) KO8 Danny Dougherty(10-2-1)
Croot scored only his third career stoppage. This was the second loss of Dougherty's career and the second loss at the hands of Croot. The scorecards were even, with both fighters bleeding profusely, when Croot landed a rapier like right cross which poleaxed his opponent. WW - Tommy West(13-1) TKO1(Cuts) Perry Queenan (3-10) West landed a hard right hook which opened a horific cut on Queenan's left eyelid, the doctor waived the fight off almost immediately. West is on a roll at the moment, he may have to go trans Atlantic to raise his profile. BW - Nunc Wallace(16-3-2) KO4 Chappie Moran(5-11) After his devastating loss to Billy Plimmer, this was a good comeback from Wallace. Moran starting well but had no answer to Nunc's fourth round combination. Moran needs a drop in class. European Lightweight Title Jack McAuliffe(Challenger)(28-5-1) UD12 Jabez White(7-9-1) It is a testament to the courage of White that this fight went the distance. McAullife(below) has regained his coveted Lightweight crown, previously lost to White by disqualification, by a wide margin points victory. The Irishman was in command from the opening bell, with the Champion in danger of being stopped within the first three minutes. White was on the canvas twice during the fight after shipping numerous combinations from the world class challenger. White fought back heroically in the tenth and hurt McAuliffe to the ribs, but it was only a brief respite. The judges had an easy decision on their hands. McAuliffe will now be gunning for Bobby Dobbs, though he will surely have to spend more time in the gymn when fighting at that level, he looked less than toned around the midrift when he entered the arena. |

24th September 1892 - Madison Square Garden
World Featherweight Title
Young Griffo (Champion)(27-2) V Solly Smith (15-3-3) Smith is the mandatory No.1 ranked challenger This will be Griffo's sixth defence of his World Crown. Tonight's contest will be the third meeting of the pair, both fights have gone to Griffo. Rd 1 - Smith moves forward onto Griffo but is met with the Champs jab and accurate right crosses. Griffo (10-9) Rd 2 - More joy for Smith. He gets through to Griffo with decent right hooks and an uppercut inside....Smith returns to his corner with swelling around his left eye. Even (19-19) Rd 3 - Smith outworks Griffo, scoring to the body. Smith (29-28) Rd 4 - Nice round, Griffo edges it behind his trusty lead. Even (38-38) Rd 5 - Smith is cut! The Champ's barrage of jabs and uppercuts take effect, Smith walks away from a clinch with a very bad gash over his left eye, with Griffo's accuracy it is difficult to see the fight lasting too much longer. Griffo (48-47) Rd 6 - Smith corner repair the cut, their man backs off allowing Griffo to land three consecutive jabs around the injured eye, there is claret all down one side of Smith's face, referee Christian pulls him away to the corner for the third time....the doctor has seen enough, its Griffo by TKO in the sixth. The judges had the cards even at the stoppage. World Bantamweight Champion George Dixon was at ringside for the scrap, during post fight chat he made it clear that it was his intention to challenge Griffo for his Featherweight title within the next year. October outlook
Dixon and Murphy to meet at the Garden
George Dixon(below) will defend his World Bantamweight Title at Madison Square Garden against Johnny Murphy. Murphy outpointed Brit Billy Plimmer in a final eliminator to earn the challenge. The undercard is excellent. Joe Walcott (14-0-0)(14 stoppages) will meet unbeaten Charles Kemmic (8-0), whilst also at Welterweight unbeaten Andy Watson(11-0) faces Rube Ferns (15-0-1). The card will be rounded off by a bout at Middleweight between veteran George LaBlanche and Isadore Strauss. The latter recently scored a huge upset over Billy McCarthy. |

13th October 1892 - National Sporting Club, London
BW - Casper Leon(8-1-1) TKO7(Cuts) Bill Baxter(7-8)
A broken nose suffered by Baxter in the third round ended the fight. BW - Billy Plimmer(13-1-2) UD10 Jack Hare(7-1-1) Routine if unspectacular victory for the European Champion. MW - Ted Pritchard(9-1) KO3 Charley Davis(7-1) A first look at these two Englishman proved little, other than that Davis has a glass jaw. MW - Irish Jack Burke(20-2-1) TKO9(Cuts) Reddy Gallagher(13-7) A real get out of jail for Burke! Although cut badly over the right eye Gallagher was well on top at the start of the penultimate round. Everything he had threw seemed to land, leaving the 'Irish Lad's' face in tatters. Then halfway through the ninth Burke(below) threw a wild right hook sending his opponent flying. Gallagher got to his feet okay but the gash had reopened and the contest was called off. |

23rd October 1892 - Madison Square Garden
MW - George LaBlanche(23-8-1) KO1 Isadore Strauss(5-8)
After his huge upset win over Billy McCarthy, Isadore Strauss fell back down to earth with a bump, courtesy of a crushing right hook from LaBlanche. WW - Joe Walcott(15-0) MD10 Charles Kemmic(8-1) Kemmic did himself no harm in defeat. Becoming the first man to take Walcott the distance, he was never in serious trouble and only lost out by a majority decision. Walcott(below left) was strangely subdued and we rarely caught sight of his innate ability. The ninth round was Walcott's best, blocking and jabbing off the back foot with Kemmic unable to get near him. At the end of the bout most at ringside thought Walcott had done enough, judge Coburn gave the fight as a draw but consensus prevailed. WW - Rube Ferns(16-0-1) UD10 Andy Watson(11-1) Watson stepped up in class and was found wanting. Ferns(below right) outclassed his man throughout, scoring the fight's only knockdown in the ninth round. The winner has Matty Matthews American title in his sights. World Bantamweight Title George Dixon (Holder)(29-3) V Johnny Murphy (#1)(16-2-1) A mandatory defence for Dixon. The second meeting between the pair, the first resulted in a points victory for Dixon. Both fighters look in fine shape as they enter the ring. Rd 1 - Good start to the scrap. Dixon the far sharper of the two, finds Murphy with two withering right crosses. Dixon (10-9) Rds 2&3 - Dixon dominates behind his jab, could be a long night for Murphy(30-27) Rds 4&5 - All Dixon. Murphy can't get inside and is eating the Canadian's jab as he tries. Dixon (50-45) Rd 6 - A change of tack from Dixon. He stands toe to toe with Murphy and out slugs him, scoring with right hooks to head and body. Dixon (60-54) Rd 7 - Pre fight betting suggested a close contest, the bookies were wrong. Dixon is producing a master class, once again he trades with Murphy who can't match his speed, power or accuracy, it's a whitewash! Dixon (70-63) Rd 8 - In desperation Murphy throws himself at Dixon and walks into a right uppercut, he sprawls to the canvas for the fights first knockdown. The Challenger clings on for the rest of the round and returns to his corner in bad shape. Dixon (80-71) Rd 9 - Although a mile ahead on the cards Dixon still presses forward, he lands concussive hooks, crosses and uppercuts in tandem. With seconds left in the round Murphy is out on his feet and simply doesn't see the rapier right cross from Dixon which ends the fight. Dixon wins by a scintillating KO victory. Where now for the Champ? Post fight, the ebullient Dixon had only one man's name on his agenda, Young Griffo. Last edited by Tosti; 08-12-2008 at 07:16 PM. |

Breaking News.......
The recently troubled career of Middleweight Young Mitchell has taken another turn for the worse.
Last night in new York Mitchell received a year custodial sentence for assault. Apparently Mitchell became involved in a drunken bar brawl where he made good use of his fistic talents. The American boxing authorities have stripped him of his National belt. |

8th November 1892 - National Sporting Club, London
LW - Sam Blakelock(13-3-1) UD10 Jabez White(8-10-1)
Blakelock unbeaten in eight bouts. Commonwealth Middleweight Title Billy McCarthy(Holder)(18-3-1) UD12 Ted Pritchard (9-2) This all came far too soon for Pritchard. He found himself on the deck after the first punch of the fight and although he recovered from the uppercut he was never in with a chance. Although this was the ex number one ranked challenger's first win in three, there was little in the way of positives to take from the contest. The challenger was out on his feet from halfway but McCarthy seemed reluctant to finish the job. Commonwealth Lightweight Title Jack McAuliffe (Challenger)(30-5-1) TKO6 George Dawson (14-3-1) Never a dull moment with McAuliffe. On entering the ring it appeared that he had come direct from the NSC members bar. He toyed with the Champion for three rounds, landing unanswered jabs, hooks and crosses. Halfway through the fourth round the fight was turned on it's head. McAuliffe hadn't thrown a punch for a good two minutes when he attempted to land a haymaker right, as he moved in Dawson caught him with a perfect right uppercut which sent the ex World Champ flying. He barely made it to his feet at the eight count and somehow survived the rest of the round. The next five minutes were a whirlwind of dazzling speed and power from the Irishman. He landed at will, leaving Dawson's face in a terrible swollen mess. Referee Mace stepped in with a minute left in the round, too early for some at ringside. |

14th November 1892 - Rushcutters Bay, Sydney
WW - Owen Ziegler (10-1-1) UD Mick Dunn (11-5)
A nice road win for the American. Ziegler has now notched three quick victories after a year on the sidelines. MW - Dan Creedon (24-4) TKO8 Jim Hall (9-11) After weathering a storm in the first round the Kiwi banger came back and floored his old 'friend' three times in the eighth round, enforcing a TKO victory. This made the rubber four to one in Creedon's favour. |

9th December 1892 - Madison Square Garden
WW - Charles Kemmic (9-1) UD10 Andy Watson (11-2)
Kemmic followed up his good performance against Walcott with a facile victory over Watson. LW - George Taylor (13-1) UD10 Billy Dacey (17-13-1) Graduation win for Taylor. The veteran Dacey couldn't wotk his way inside on Taylor, who used his jab to good effect. American Featherweight Title Solly Smith (Champion)(19-4-3) UD12 Patsy Haley (11-8-3) Although Haley(below) suffered a landslide defeat he mad plenty of friends in the process. You know what you are going to get with Smith, he roughed his opponent up inside and landed heavy hooks to the body and jaw. The Champ had built up a big lead at the start of the ninth round and appeared to be much the fresher of the two. He rammed home his superiority in the tenth stanza, twice putting Haley on the canvas. Down again in the tenth the challenger continued to mix with Smith, he went on to have his best moments of the fight in the penultimate round but at the final bell the result was a foregone conclusion. Smith will be keen to hang on to his 'top contender' mantle and to gain revenge over Young Griffo. |

14th December 1892 - California Athletic Club
MW - Charles McCoy (10-1-1) KO2 Harry Peppers (4-9)
This was McCoy's first fight on a major card, he took every opportunity to impress the large crowd. Five minutes into the bout he unleashed a vicious two handed combination which knocked Peppers cold. MW - Alec Greggains (8-6) UD10 James Payne (8-13-1) The popular Greggains scored a resounding points victory in a poor bout. The only knockdown of the fight came in the last minute after Greggains had landed a right counter. LW - George Lavigne (29-6-1) TKO10 Mike Daly (11-12-1) No hiding place for Daly. Lavigne(below) was back to his crowd pleasing best, he dominated Daly from the off, scoring at will with big right hooks and uppercuts. Daly could not cope with his intensity, although it took nine rounds before he hit the canvas. Daly was down again in the tenth, and although he rose in time to beat the count the referee had seen enough damage. |

14th December 1892 - California Athletic Club
World Middleweight Title
Jack Dempsey (23-2-1) V Jack Fogarty (19-9-1) Eighth consecutive defence of title by Dempsey This is the third match between the two fighters, Dempsey won both previous fights by stoppage. Both men look in fine shape entering the arena. Rd 1 - Dempsey edges the round, finishing strongly after shipping a couple of right hands from Fogarty in the first minute. Rd 2 - Once again not much in it, somewhat surprisingly Fogarty is finding Dempsey easy to hit. Even (19-19) Rd 3 - Dempsey works well behind his jab. Demspey (29-28) Rd 4 - All Dempsey! The Champ dominates the three minutes, he uses his left jab as a set up and hammers home a barrage of crosses, leaving Fogarty happy to hear the bell. Dempsey (39-37) Rd 5 - Dempsey appears to be in full control, he moves forward to follow up a lead left and misses Fogarty's haymaker right hand, the Champ slams to the canvas, he rises at the seven counts and gets on his bike for the rest of the stanza. One punch has evened the contest out (47-47) Rd 6 - Good follow up round by Fogarty. Dempsey attempts to mix it with the challenger and comes off second best. Fogarty (57-56) Rd 7 - Once again Dempsey decides to meet fire with fire, this time with some success. After three minutes the pair have traded evenly. Fogarty (67-66) Rd 8 - Dempsey is the aggressor once more, this time he lands the better blows and wins the round comfortably. The fight seems even (76 each) Rd 9 - The Champs out of character aggression is taking Fogarty by surprise. He lands heavy right crosses and hooks with little in return from Fogarty. Dempsey (86-85) Rd 10 - Fogarty stopps the rot. After two thirds of the fight most at ringside have the contest evenly poised. Dempsey appears to have a bit more up his sleeve, he seemed in much better shape than Fogarty when they returned to their corners. Even (95-95) Rd 11 - Fogarty edges ahead! Could Dempsey be about to lose his crown. His tactics of trading blows with Fogarty have not paid dividends but it's probably too late now to go back to a defensive strategy. Fogarty has just found it to easy to land his big right hooks. Fogarty (105-104) Rd 12 - Demspey came out blazing with both hands. He did just enough to scrape the round, both men look like they are now running on empty. Even (114-114) Rd 13 - In the last six minutes Fogarty has slowed noticeably. His work rate has dropped and Dempsey has taken advantage landed his rapier jab followed up with accurate right crosses. Dempsey (124-123) Rd 14 - Two heavy blows to the midrift of Fogarty are the feature of the three minutes. Dempsey is looking like he may have pulled it out of the fire again! Dempsey (134-132) Rd 15 - The worst round in Championship boxing history! With the decision still in the balance neither man was prepared to take 'the bull by the horns', resulting in a dreadful three minutes. The final bell sounded, Dempsey has probably just held onto his crown. The judges cards scored it 142-142, 143-141 Fogarty!, 143-142 Dempsey Dempsey draws his second consecutive title fight. The Champ is hanging on to his title by his finger nails. Fogarty must be beside himself, a more aggressive display in the last round would surely have seen him wearing the Title belt. |

20th December 1892 - National Sporting Club, London
MW - Denny Kelliher (10-12-1) WDSQ3 Charley Davis (7-2)
Davis was having much the better of things before landing a right hook below the belt. MW - Frank Craig (10-1) UD10 Joe Butler (4-11-1) Once again lack of condition defeated Butler. He was holding his own until halfway but thereon was empty. This was Craig's first fight since his upset win over Young Mitchell, 1893 could be a big year for the 'Harlem Coffee Cooler'. FW - Ben Jordan (15-1) TKO2 Tommy White (11-1) The members of the NSC paid good money to tempt unbeaten Tommy White from his homeland. It was a good investment! Jordan, always a favourite of the Covent Garden club, sprang into life in the second stanza. He landed two heavy crosses which sent White to the ropes, although he tried to cover up there was no escape, Jordan(below) hammered him to head and body leaving referee Mace no choice but to stop the contest. Apparently there was a 'hush hush' meeting of NSC bigwigs after the fight, speculation is that they are planning a big money purse to lure current World Bantamweight Champion George Dixon over to meet their man. |
