Starlight is one of those guys I always like but he just can't get very far.

Shane copied a short auto-biography Rollins wrote from a local library (in Bendigo I think?) and sent me a copy. Did he send you one Tom? If not, I can send it to you if you have any interest.

19th September, National Sporting Club

BW - Bill Baxter (12-10-1) MD10 Walter Croot (20-7-1)

FW - Ben Jordan (17-2) UD10 Charles Rochette (8-3)

After his shellacking at the hands of Johnny Griffin, this was a nice fight for Jordan.

He controlled it behind a crisp jab which Rochette had no answer to.

BW - Casper Leon (14-1-1) UD10 Ike Weir (7-8-0)

This comfortable victory for Leon (below left) made it 2-0 between the pair.

The Ulsterman had great difficulty piercing Leon's defence. He did score some success in the ninth round, landing some heavy right hooks, but overall it was Leon who held sway.

A European title challenge is high on the Italian's agenda.

LW - Jack Everhardt (15-2) UD10 Jabez White (9-11-1)

Everhardt put up a good performance against Jimmy Carroll last time out, he followed it through against White. He dominated from the start landing some powerful right hands.

European and Commonwealth Featherweight Title

Frank Murphy (18-8-5) STD11 Harry Spurden (8-3)

Murphy held on to his titles by the skin of his teeth.

There was very little action throughout the fight, with Murphy apparently going downhill, until the eleventh round when after an accidental clash of heads a huge gash opened on Murphy's forehead.

The ringside doctor called an immediate halt to the fight and the scorecards were called.

Murphy won by a split decision to which some at ringside disagreed. Spurden can have no real complaints, he was just not good enough to seperate a fading fighter from his titles.

World Bantamweight Final Eliminator

Johnny Murphy (22-3-1) UD12 Billy Plimmer (19-2-2)

American Champion Johnny Murphy (below right) will get another crack at George Dixon's World Bantamweight Title.

But this was not plain sailing for Murphy. The American had destroyed Plimmer in there previous meeting and the writing appeared to be on the wall when Murphy landed heavily in the first round.

For the next six rounds it was all Plimmer. Culminating in the seventh stanza when a right uppercut sent Murphy to the canvas for the fights first knockdown.

Murphy was behind on all cards but threw caution to the wind and swarmed all over the local boy. The fight turned in a moment and Murphy managed to level the knockdown count in the ninth round after a right cross landed flush on Plimmer's jaw.

Plimmer, still ahead on the cards, went into his shell and allowed Murphy to dominate the next two rounds. As the bell rang at the start of the twelth round it was all to play for.

Murphy made the fight his. Halfway through the round he landed a heavy right hook on Plimmer's jaw and sent him to the deck. Up at the eight count he walked into another right hand which sent him down again. The Englishman managed to hang on for the final two minutes but he had blown his chances. The crowd at the NSC were dismayed at seeing there man beaten after seemingly being in such control.

22nd September 1893, Olympic Club New Orleans

Featuring the World Middleweight Title

FW - Oscar Gardner (11-2) UD10 Marty McCue (10-8)

LW - Wilmington Jack Daly (6-2-1) UD10 Billy Dacey (18-15-1)

LW - Danny Duane (10-4-1) UD10 Johnny Laughton (1-10-1)

FW - Tommy Danforth (9-2) KO2 Fred Bogan (10-2)

Nice win for Danforth, a step up in class next year is on the agenda.

Vacant American Lightweight Title

Vacated by the retiring Jimmy Carroll.

Billy Ernst (16-1) KO11 Texas Jack Burke (12-1)

Ernst (below left) is the new American Lightweight Champion.

In a display of devastating punching power he had Burke on the deck five times.

Ernst was quick out of the gates, landing a right hook in the first minute of the bout which scored the first knockdown.

Burke, to his credit fought back well, scoring solidly from distance and keeping away from Erne's dangerous right hokks and uppercuts.

The underdog however could not sustain the rally and was dropped again in the eighth round after a right cross. There were further knockdown's in the ninth and tenth rounds, both from right uppercuts.

The eleventh and final round was butchery. Erne hammered a brave but broken Burke without mercy. With five seconds left in the round he landed another right uppercut and the fight was over.

Ernst should enjoy his reign as American Champion, there is a vast armoury of talent in the wings.

Middleweight World Title

Jack Dempsey (23-2-2)(Holder) V George LaBlanche (25-8-1)

As Dempsey enters the ring he appears 'soft' around the middle.

LaBlanche holds a 2-1 advantage in there previous encounters.

LaBlanche is the No.1 rated challenger in the division.

The bookies pre fight are unable to split them.

This is Dempsey's 8th defence of the title in his second reign since winning it off LaBlanche

Round 1 - Good start from Dempsey, landing come crisp shots. (Dempsey 10-9)

Round 2 - KNOCKDOWN! Dempsey lands two rapier crosses before walking into a haymaker of a right hook. The Champ hits the deck, he manages to get to his feet at the nine count. Amazingly he fight's back strongly for the remaining two minutes of the stanza, finding the 'Fighting Marine' an easy target. (LaBlanche 19-18)

Round 3 - Demspey's workrate is first class, in an excellent round the Champ lands with some rapier like jabs and crosses whilst LaBlanche lands some hefty right hooks. (Even 28-28)

Round 4 - Halfway through the round a three punch combination from Dempsey sent LaBlanche covering up on the ropes. Besides the knockdown, Dempsey appears to be in good form. (Dempsey 38-37)

Round 5 - A busier round from the Canadian. Two heavy right hooks earn him the points. A third of the way through the battle and the fight is even.

Round 6 - Dempsey outworks LaBlanche again, scoring with his trademark jab and right cross. (Dempsey 57-56)

Round 7 - Other than in the second round, LaBlanche has been strangely lethargic, Dempsey scores comfortably with his left jab. (Dempsey 67-65)

Round 8 - Demspey is coasting now. LaBlanche has hardly thrown a punch in the last 9 minutes. (Dempsey 77-74)

Round 9 - Aside from a crunching right uppercut from LaBlanche, his first decent punch for sometime, the round was a stinker. Dempsey (87-84)

Round 10 - LaBlanch'e corner must have ripped into him between rounds, he lands a handful of heavy blows most notably a hard right hook to the body of Dempsey. Dempsey (96-95)

Round 11 - The Challenger goes on the offensive again, but this time Dempsey is ready for him and scores with the jab and ties up LaBlanche whilst he tries to work inside. Dempsey (106-104)

Round 12 - More action in the twelfth. LaBlanche has enjoyed success when forcing the fight and he won the round. A right hook to the jaw was the highlight punch. Dempsey (115-114)

Dempsey seems to be shading the contest, but a strangely subdued LaBlanche is still in there with a big shout.

Round 13 - Two crushing right crosses and big uppercut send Dempsey to the ropes, the best round for LaBlanche for sometime. (124-124 Even)

Round 14 - Both fighters rise from there stall looking fatigued. LaBlanche rips into Dempsey landing heavily with hooks and a nasty right uppercut. LaBlanche may be three minutes away from regaining his World Title at 37 years of age. LaBlanche (134-133)

Round 15 - LaBlanche edges the round, coming out on top inside and landing another heavy right uppercut. The ringside expert has it for LaBlanche by 2 points.

Now it's up to the judges.

It's unanimous!

James Richards has it 144-141

Rudolph Bowden has it 143-142

Colonel James Park has it 143-142

All to George LaBlanche (below right), the new Middleweight Champion of the World.

Dempey's near four year reign in his second term as World Middleweight Champion is over.

On closer inspection of the scorecards, LaBlanche won the last four rounds on all the judges cards.

Hi Tommy.

It was a strange sim. Dempsey has already gone post prime and with the likes of Kid McCoy and Frank Craig in the wings he has problems.

Fight of the year?

There is no doubting the October highlight in the world of boxing.

Bobby Dobbs (26-0)(below left) will put both his unbeaten record and his World Lightweight Title on the line against number 1 contender Jack McAuliffe (33-5-1)(below right). McAuliffe has been in great condition as of late and is certain to give Dobbs a run for his money. It will be the first meeting between the pair. Madison Square Garden will be a fitting venue for a fight of this magnitude.

The undercard at the Garden will feature a fascinating clash between two unbeaten scrappers. Matty Matthews (18-0) will defend his American Welterweight title against Rube Ferns (17-0-1), when the odds compilers chalked up there prices Ferns was a slight favourite.

In London, the NSC will host a defence of Tommy West's (17-1-0) Commonwealth Welterweight title against Abe Hicken (13-2). The vacant European Welterweight title will also be up for grabs. A victory for either man would ensure a trip to the States where greater prizes beckon.

14th October 1893 - National Sporting Club

LW – Johnny Van Heest (14-4-1) TKO8 Martin E Snee (7-4-1)

LW – George Taylor (8-5) MD10 Charles Norton (7-6)

Taylor made heavy weather of beating Norton. After hammering his opponent around the ring in the first round, Taylor fought within himself and managed to lose the fight on one of the judges cards.

BW - Pedlar Palmer (15-2-1) SD10 Eddie Avery (9-4)
Palmer pulled this one out of the fire.

After suffering two knockdowns, in the third and sixth rounds, Palmer staged an aggressive late rally and managed to convince two of the three judges.

A defeat against the unfancied Avery would have been devastating for the Palmer’s title ambitions.

BW – Nunc Wallace (20-4-4) D10 Danny Dougherty (16-3-2)

For reasons only known by Dougherty and his connections he decided to ‘let up’ on Wallace in the last four rounds and coast home.

Wallace made full advantage of the defensive tactics of Dougherty and punished him with some nice right hooks.

The first half of the fight had been all Dougherty, he dominated behind his left jab. After his sould destroying loss against Johnny Murphy last time out, this was another blow to the capable American’s morale.

MW – Young Mitchell (22-4-1) UD10 Irish Jack Burke (21-4-1)

With this ‘bloody’ victory the career of the troubled Young Mitchell (below left) took a distinct turn for the better.

With the battle hanging in the balance after 6 rounds Mitchell went to war. The turning point of the fight came in the seventh stanza when Mitchell landed a right hook to Burke’s temple which sent him sprawling across the ring. After surviving the rest of the seventh round the eighth was worse for him. Most at ringside thought the fight should have been stopped, Mitchell landed blow after blow on the defenceless Irishman.

Burke, to his credit, saw out the 10 rounds but the result was a formality. The years appear to be catching up on ‘Irish Jack’.

Commonwealth and Vacant European Welterweight Title

Abe Hicken (14-2) TKO6 Tommy West (17-2)

Hicken (below right) defied the oddsmakers by hammering Tommy West around the ring for 6 rounds.

West must have believed the bookies for as he entered the ring it looked like he trained for the bout at the local tavern.

The first round was extraordinary, West started like a man possessed. He landed three heavy right hooks to the head and attempted to follow up inside with a right uppercut, as he did so Hicken unleashed a right cross of his own and scored the battle’s only knockdown.

West tried hard to impose himself but Hicken was having none of it. He hammered West relentlessly with hooks and uppercuts, the Welshman as usual gave no thought to defence and eventually paid the price.
West’s lack of condition caught up with him early. Barely halfway through the war West was at a standstill, Hicken took his chance and pounded West around the square. The bout was rightly halted and Hicken was the new dual champion.

20th October - Madison Square Garden

Featuring the World Lightweight Title

FW - Walter Edgerton (12-9) UD10 Jack Collins (6-2-1)

FW - Cal McCarthy (22-5-3) UD10 George Siddons (11-10-2)

FW - Al Jansen (10-6) UD10 Tommy Barnes (12-4)

FW - Rochester Tommy Dixon (13-1) UD10 Mike Cushing (9-1-2)

Dixon broke Cushing's unbeaten record with the minimum of fuss. After decking his man in the first round Dixon coasted home.

American Welterweight Title

Rube Ferns (18-0-1) UD12 Matty Matthews (18-1)(Holder)

Ferns (bottom left) completely outclassed Matthews and took away both Matthews unbeaten record and his American Welterweight crown.

With a huge depth of young class in this division, only time will tell how long Ferns can hang on to the belt. However you could not fail to be impressed by the performance from Ferns. After an even first three rounds he stepped up a gear and outboxed Matthews.

He won the last eight rounds, culminating in the twelfth stanza when Matthews threw everything at Ferns only to walk into a two handed combination which sent Matthews to the canvas for the fights only knockdown.

This was the first meeting between the two 20 year old's but is unlikely to be the last.

World Lightweight Title

Bobby Dobbs (26-0)(Holder) V Jack McAuliffe (33-5-1)(#1 Contender)

Both fighter's enter the ring in great shape, which is of some relief to McAuliffe's supporters.

The pair have met once before in July of 1891 when Dobbs took McAuliffe's title by 13th round stoppage. It was a classic, Dobbs had a less than trim McAuliffe on the deck four times before the bout was ended.

This will be the sixth defence of the title by Dobbs.

Rd 1 - The opening round is an ominous one for Dobbs. The Challenger looks fully 'up for it' tonight and catches his man with two big right hooks. (10-9McAuliffe)

Rd 2 - The little Irishman plants two more right hands on Dobbs. The champ returns to his stool with swelling already around the left eye. (20-18 McAuliffe)

Rd 3 - Dobbs starts well landing a right cross but as the round progresses he eats leather. McAuliffe is landing at will and is in another class at the moment. (McAuliffe 30-27)

Rd 4 - Dobbs lands a good hook to the body but takes three decent right hands to the head. The champ just can't get into the fight, plus his left eye is getting worse by the minute. (McAuliffe 40-36)

Rd 5 - McAuliffe is in the driving seat, he lands three rapier right crosses. Dobb's corner have got there work cut out with his left eye. (McAuliffe 50-45)

Rd 6 - Same again. This is becomming very one sided, McAuliffe lands two digs to the body. (McAuliffe 60-54)

Rd 7 - Dobbs tries to move inside on McAuliffe but walks into a wave of uppercuts and hooks. The unbeaten champ cuts a forlorn figure as he trudges back to his corner, the troublesome left eye is virtually shut. (McAuliffe 70-63)

Rd 8 - The quietest round thus far with the Champ throwing virtually no leather (McAuliffe 80-72)

Rd 9 - A horrific round for Dobbs. Halfway through the stanza, McAuliffe lands a huge right cross which sends Dobbs wheeling across the square. The Irishman piles on the pressure and lands heavy right hooks and crosses to the head of the defenceless Champ. Just before the end of the round Dobbs is lead to the corner so the doc can check his eye. He is given more time. (McAuliffe 90-81)

Rd 10 - McAuliffe rushes from his stool and plants a right hook on the chin of Dobbs. The Champ goes down for the first knockdown of the fight. He gets to his feet at the eight count and holds on grimly. McAuliffe lands another right cross and moves in for the kill. Dobbs, out on his feet, swings a right uppercut and flattens McAuliffe. The crowd goes crazy, McAuliffe barely beta the count and is happy to hear the bell. (McAuliffe 100-91)

Rd 11 - Back to normal. McAuliffe lands two right crosses, it's all or nothing now for Dobbs. (McAuliffe 110-100)

Rd 12 - Dobbs swings wildly at his foe, but McAuliffe is too good for him. The Challenger has bounced back well after the tenth round mishap and lands heavy right crosses. (McAuliffe 120-109)

Rd 13 - McAuliffe lands two more right hands before referee Daly leads Dobbs to his corner. The doctor at ringside shakes his head and Dobbs reign is over.

No one could question the heart of Dobbs, but McAuliffe (below right) was back to his best and once again is the World Lightweight Champion.

November outlook

One major fight dominates the cards in November.

Dick Hollywood (11-0) will make the first defence of his World Featherweight Title against Johnny T Griffin (17-5-2).

The venue for the fight, Lansdowne Road in Dublin, will be packed with around 50,000 spectators.

In an interesting twist, the ex World champ Young Griffo will feature on the undercard.

Great Stuff. 50,000 screaming and well hydrated Irishmen should make for a very interesting crowd.

I'm off the booze til the end of January so I probably wouldn't enjoy it!

Because of which i have had to cancel a day out with my Irish mates at the Wasps V Leinster rugby match on saturday.

12th December 1893 - California Athletic Club

LW - James Curran (10-6) KO8 John Henry Johnson (6-5-2)

BW - Jimmy Barry (18-0)(17) KO10 Chappie Moran (10-12)(0)

This was the first look at Barry on a major card, there is no doubting his talent. He toyed with the experienced but aging Moran before flattening him with a right hook in the last round.

MW - Harris Martin (11-0)(10) KO1 Herb Goddard (2-9)(1)

Martin (below left) is making waves in the Middleweight ranks. He destroyed Goddard with a right cross and there are rumours that Martin will be ranked very highly when the next tables are published.

WW - Eugene Bezenah (10-1-2) MD10 Dick Sandall (16-1-1)

WW - Young Corbett (22-2)(10) UD10 Dick Case (12-4)(4)

In a cagey affair it took Corbett (below centre) an age to find his rhythm. The fight was in the balance until the ninth round when a right hook toppled Case. He beat the count but the damage was done on the scorecards.

WW - Utah Bob Thompson (13-2)(12) SD10 Charles Kemmic (13-4)

Kemmic deserves a change in fortune.

After going 15 rounds with Tommy Ryan and dropping a close decision to Joe Walcott, Kemmic hand another near miss here.

After being outworked by Thompson (below right), Kemmic turned the fight on its head in the penultimate stanza. After absorbing a right hook from his foe Kemmic landed a ripping right cross which sent Thompson sprawling, the Utah man barely made the count only to be hammered to the canvas again by a right cross. Thompson survived the rest of the round and did well to come back and edge the last three minutes. Kemmic was strangely defensive in the last round, it cost him the fight.

14th November 1893 - Lansdowne Road, Dublin

Featuring the World Featherweight Title

FW - Harry Spurden (9-3) KO1 Morgan Crowthier (1-11)

BW - Bill Baxter (13-10-1) SD10 Ike Weir (7-9)

FW - Fred Johnson (11-13) KO10 Nipper Peakes (9-5-1)

BW - Billy Plimmer (20-2-2)(11) TKO4 (Cuts) Tommy Spider Kelly (25-7-2)

In the first minute of the fight Plimmer smashed a right cross to mouth of Kelly, blood poured from the wound. It caused problems from there on, the bout was stopped just as it was warming up. Bad luck for the ex World Champion.

FW - Young Griffo (30-3)(5) UD10 Eddie Lenny (11-5-2)(2)

A walk in the park for Griffo.

The Australian dominated from the opening, popping his famous jab in to the face of the talentef but outclassed Lenny.

The crowd were none to pleased at the level of the action, but Griffo came for the win.

World Featherweight Title

Dick Hollywood (11-0)(8)(Holder) V Johnny T Griffin (17-5-2)(11)(#1)

The bookies made Griffin 6/4 fav before the fight.

This would be Hollywood's first defence since beating Young Griffo.

Round 1 - Quiet start from both men with Griffin doing just enough for the extra point. (Griffin 10-9)

Round 2 - Two nice hooks from Hollywood find their target. (Even 19-19)

Round 3 - Two heavy right hooks to the body from Griffin edges the round (Griffin 29-28)

Round 4 - Much better work from Hollywood. He lands heavily to the body throughout the stanza. (Even 38-38)

Round 5 - Not much going on here. Griffin works the better inside and edges the round. (Griffin 48-47)

Round 6 - A better three minutes. Griffin land two big uppercuts but is caught coming in by a right cross which opens a cut on the American's forehead. As Griffin returns to his stool there is a first sign of swelling around his left eye. (Even 57-57)

Round 7 - There's still nothing between the pair. Hollywood is slightly more aggressive. (Hollywood 67-66)

Round 8 - After some good battling inside, Griffin breaks from the clinch with blood pouring down his face from the earlier cut, the fight is allowed to continue but it is becomming an issue. (Hollywood 77-75)

Round 9 - Griffin is led to the ringside doctor almost immediately the round begins. The cut on his forehead has worsened. The fight continues, Hollywood lands two hooks the head of Griffin causing even more blood to flow down the challengers face. Griffin is oncemore led away, this time round the doc has seen enough and the fight is over.

At the end of the eighth round Hollywood was two points ahead on all three cards.

Middleweight World Rankings - Dec 1893

As was rumoured, Jack Dempsey has been punished heavily for losing his World crown to Geo La Blanche. The unbeaten but largely untested quartet of Turner, Morris, Banks and Martin head the rankings.
