Golden Gloves 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Lightweight Semi Final's
Jimmy Reilly (17-3-4)(6) UD4 Battling Nelson (23-1-0)(6) A bad time for Nelson to lose his perfect record. Reilly pulled off an upset win thanks to right hand combination that dropped Nelson in the second stanza. Jack Goldswain (19-1-3)(5) MD4 Kid McPartland (19-2-3)(1) Big efforts in the last two rounds saw Goldswain secure a majority draw. Judge McDougall was the official able to split the pair, he surprisingly gave it 40-36 to Goldswain, enabling the Englishman to advance to a final bout against Jimmy Reilly. |

Golden Gloves 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Middleweight Semi Final's
Charles Goff (13-6-5)(3) D4 Jewey Cook (13-7-4)(0) Goff edges past Cook in a substandard affair. Goff and Cook were equal on punches landed but the American moves into the final courtesy of punches thrown. Tom Thomas (12-7-5)(2) KO4 Australian Billy Edwards (8-11-5)(0) With 15 seconds left in the fight, Thomas was on his way back to Wales. From nowhere he exploded a thunderous right cross on the chin of Edwards and all the Australian's previous hardwork had come to nothing. |

Golden Gloves 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Featherweight Semi Finals
Dave Sullivan (17-4-3)(1) UD4 Jimmy Lawler (11-6-7)(2) Smooth win for Sullivan. Young Corbett II (20-3-1)(3) UD4 Mike Sears (13-5-6)(0) Corbett fought hard inside and easily had the measure of Sears. The final between Corbett and Sullivan will be the classic 'boxer V slugger' confrontation. |

Golden Gloves 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Welterweight Semi Final's
George Cole (19-1-3)(4) D4 Eddie Connolly (13-4-4)(4) After a blistering display of boxing in the second round, Cole took his foot off the pedal and nearly paid the price. The Canadian came back strongly and forced a draw on the cards. Cole gained his final place on superior punches landed totals. Young Peter Jackson (21-0-3)(8) MD4 Billy Gardner (14-6-2)(5) Jackson moves into a fascinating final against Cole. Some at ringside ar eof the opinion that Jackson ids the best young talent on show across the weights. |

Golden Gloves 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Heavyweight Semi Final's
Jimmy Elliot (18-3-3)(9) TKO2 Black Bill (12-12-0)(6) Black Bill, the conqueror of Jack Johnson, had no answer to the power and hand speed of Elliot. Bill was out on his feet in the second round when the referee stepped in. Harry Laing (18-4-2)(8) D4 Theo Van Buskirk (19-0-5)(7) No holding back here! Van Buskirk started strongly, dominating the first stanza. Laing made all the running in the next two rounds. He came within a whisker of stopping Van Buskirk in the third round after landing a fusilage of hooks and uppercuts. The American came back strongly in the fourth round and forced a draw on the scorcards. Laing will face Elliot in the Heavyweight final courtesy of a superior amount of punches landed. |

I do not think that I have seen that yet Bear. In fact, I am certain of it. I am finding the book on Maher quite enjoyable, there is a wealth of information even though it sorely needed a good editor's touch before going to print. |

December 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Golden Gloves Bantamweight Title
McGovern by a whisker! Terry McGovern (21-1-2)(11) MD4 Harry Harris (18-4-3)(4) McGovern (below) became the inaugural Golden Gloves Bantamweight Champion courtesy of a Majority draw. Two of the judges were unable to split the pair, whilst Lord Lonsdale gave it to McGovern by a point. Harris had started the better of the pair, boxing well behind his lead left. McGovern piled on the pressure in the last two rounds, landing heavy hooks to the body and generally out working his opponent. Last edited by Tosti; 01-30-2009 at 01:24 PM. |

Golden Gloves Featherweight Title
Dave Sullivan (17-4-4)(1) MD4 Young Corbett II (20-3-2)(3) Sullivan (below) avenged to previous defeats at the hands of Corbett by securing a majority draw and the Golden Gloves trophy. In a poor affair Sullivan dominated the second round only to take his foot of the pedal and let Corbett back into the fight. |

December 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Golden Gloves Lightweight Title
Jack Goldswain (20-1-3)(5) UD4 Jimmy Reilly (17-5-3)(6) Goldswain (below) outclassed his opponent and took the inaugural Golden Gloves Lightweight Trophy back to England. Reilly staged a brave rally in the last stanza but left himself too much to do after a first round knockdown, Reilly barely beat the count after shipping a nasty right uppercut. |

December 1893 - Madison Square Garden
Golden Gloves Middleweight Title
Charles Goff (14-6-5)(3) UD4 Tom Thomas (12-8-5)(2) At the end of the second round things were going to plan for the visiting Welshman, he had dominated the first two rounds, finding Goff (below) to be an easy target. It was all change in the third stanza. Goff went on the offensive and landed a sickening right hook to the ribcage of Thomas, forcing him to take a knee. Goff boxed well in the last round, edged the point and won the trophy. |

7th January 1894 - National Sporting Club, London
Featuring the Commonwealth Middleweight Title
MW - Jack Bonner (19-1-0)(12) KO9 Peter Newton (13-1-0)(13) Newton arrived at the NSC with a perfect 13-0 record, all by knockout. By the end of the eighth round you could see why, he had landed some terrible blows to the face of Bonner causing some bad swelling. The pair went at it again in the ninth. Just as Newton went to land another right hook Bonner caught him with a peach of a right cross. Newton tried to get to his feet but was counted out. LW - Bobby Dobbs (29-1-0)(15) MD10 Andy Bowen (26-12-0)(21) Dobbs scrambled past Bowen. A year ago Dobbs was regarded as near enough unbeatable, McAullife put paid to that theory and now Bowen came within a whisker of pulling of an upset win. Bowen landed his right hooks with ease, whilst Dobbs failed to dominate with his jab. Some at ringside thought that Bowen had done enough to gain the points verdict, though he did tire markedly in the last six minutes of the fight. WW - Abe Hicken (15-2-0)(12) SD10 Andy Watson (15-3-1)(2) Hicken is on a roll! After dismantling Tommy West, winning both a European and Commonwealth belt, Hicken won a tight points verdict over the talented but tame Andy Watson. Hicken, who had alledgedly been enjoying himself after the West victory, was on the front foot throughout and although Watson 'nicked' the last two rounds Hicken had done enough. Commonwealth Middleweight Title Ted White (15-1-1)(13) KO10 Billy McCarthy (Holder)(22-4-2)(11) This bout swung one way then t'other. White started well and landed the better blows in the first half of the fight. The bout changed in the eighth stanza when McCarthy landed an uppercut to the temple forcing White to take a knee. The ninth round was all one way traffic with McCarthy landing heavily to the head and body. It swung White's way again in the tenth. He connected early on with a right cross which floored McCarthy. The Australian veteran struggled to his feet only to ship another right hand from White, the last punch of the bout. McCarthy is certainly past his best, but the crowd were delighted fro the home man nonetheless. |
