The Black Pearl
The Black Pearl, aka Harris Martin, handed out a thrashing to Dan Hickey in front of the members of the California AC.
Martin destroyed Hickey, knocking him to the canvas on two seperate occassions. On some ringside cards the Minnesota based fighter won every round. Officials at the CAC were confident of signing Harry 'Dummy' Mace to fight The Pearl at their establishment. |

Middleweight Roundup
Old Guard at the helm!
At the start of the month the WBF Middleweight rankings were dominated by three undefeated if untested pro's. Last night ex World Champion Jack Dempsey demolished Fred Morris in a one sided shellacking to destroy the third and last of the young pretenders. Harry Dummy Mace had started the rot when stopping Charles Turner, he was followed by veteran Billy McCarthy who took Johnny Banks to school with a landslide points victory. The three men are firmly in line to challenge Geo LaBlanche for his World Title. |

26th April 1894 - Lansdowne Road, Dublin
World Featherweight Title
Dick Hollywood (12-0-0)(9)(Holder) V Walter Edgerton (14-9-0)(6) Both fighters look in 'good nick' when they enter the ring. The bout is the first encounter between the pair. Round 1 - Edgerton (right) starts nicely landing some swift jabs and flashy right hands. Edgerton 10 - 9 Round 2 - Hollywood (left) gets down to work and lands to the body, but its Edgerton who 'nicks' the points with a late flurry. Edgerton 20 - 18 Round 3 - Hollywood is reprimanded for butting before landing a right cross above Edgerton's right eye, the blow draws blood. Seconds later Hollywood lands a hook which cuts Edgerton over his left eye! The challenger's forhead is awash with claret. Edgerton 30 - 27 Round 4 - Hollywood does marginally the better work in a non event round. Edgerton 39 - 37 Round 5 - Hollywood edges the round as a left hook reopens the cut over Edgerton's right eye. The challenger may have to go for broke. Edgerton 48 - 47 Round 6 - This is no classic, Hollywood is very lethargic, the Irishman takes to the ropes after a right cross from Edgerton lands on the button. George Dixon is at ringside for this, he must be pretty happy at what he has seen so far. Edgerton 58 - 56 Round 7 - Better from Hollywood, he works well inside and gives the locals something to shout about. Edgerton 67 - 66 Round 8 - The crowd boo as the pair return to their stools, Edgerton does just enough to reopen a two point gap. The corner are doing a good job with the two cuts over the American's eyes. Edgerton 77 - 75 Round 9 - The title is slipping away from Hollywood, the champ has been worse than lacklustre. Edgerton 87 - 84 Round 10 - The corner gives Hollywood a rollicking, he comes out all guns blazing but Edgerton picks him off with ease, as The Kentucky Rosebud returns to his stool it's evident that the cut over his left eye has reopened. Edgerton 97 - 93 Round 11 - Hollywood lands a left hook and the blood flows from the cut over Edgerton's right eye, within thirty seconds the American wrestles himself away from Hollywood with blood pouring from the cut over his left eye, Edgerton is led to the ringside doctor who shakes his head at Edgerton Hollywood retains his title! Surprisingly at the time of the stoppage the hometown boy was only a point behind on two of the scorecards. George Dixon is in the wings for Hollywood, the Canadian will travel to London next month and defend his Bantamweight title against George Corfield, he will then travel over to Dublin in June and attempt to win the Featherweight title from Hollywood in Dublin. 28th April 1894, Madison Square Garden
World Middleweight Title
George LaBlanche (26-8-1)(19)(H) V Paddy Purtell (12-0-2)(9) LaBlanche makes the first defence of his current reign. This is the first meeting between the pair. Both fighters look ready to go. Round 1 - Ninety seconds into the fight LaBlanche hammers a right hook to the jaw of Purtell. The Saginaw man is out cold before he hits the canvas. LaBlanche (below) looks bemused as his opponent is helped from the ring. There will be plenty of harder contests ahead for the Canadian. Last edited by Tosti; 01-06-2010 at 04:45 AM. |

4th May 1894, Chicago
Joe Walcott (21-0-0)(19) UD10 Jim Franey (13-3-0)(11)
Although Walcott was a wide margin winner he was not at his best. Franey became the only the second man to take 'The Barbados Demon' the distance and in doing so earned some praise. Walcott coasted for much of the fight and followed his corner's instructions by taking a defensive attitude towards Franey. There was talk ringside after the fight of Walcott taking on the winner of the upcomming Young Corbett and Mysterious Billy Smith bout, either of thos fighters will test Walcott's ability. |

6th May 1894, Chicago
USA Welterweight Title
Rube Ferns (20-0-1)(11)(Holder) UD12 Andy Watson (16-4-1)(3) Ferns (below) handed out a terrible beating to the challenger. The Pittsburgh born scrapper came within a whisker of being the first man to stop Watson. Ferns scored the fights only knockdown in the final round after landing a withering right hook. Watson did well to get to his feet only to walk into a barrage of punches. Ferns was in the ascendency throughout and found Watson to be a surprisingly open target. The tenth round was a shocker for Watson as he soaked up countless hefty blows to both head and midriff. Post fight Ferns connections stated that they would be looking to make a match with Utah Bob Thompson with Ferns American title at stake. |

8th May 1894, National Sporting Club
World Lightweight Title
Jack McAuliffe (35-5-1)(26)(Holder) V Stanton Abbott (10-3-0)(10) The first meeting between the pair and a huge step up in class for Abbot. Both fighters look in good condition as they enter the ring. Round 1 - McAullife (left)starts well landly quick right hands whilst on the move. McAuliffe 10 - 9. Round 2 - McAuliffe lands at will, he pops Abbott (right) from distance for the entire round before landing a thunderous right cross, referee Regan looks into Abbot's eyes and doesn't like what he sees, the fight is over! Some at ringside complain that Regan was too hasty in stopping the fight but the gulf in class between the two was huge. Last edited by Tosti; 01-08-2010 at 11:34 AM. |

8th May 1894, New York
USA Lightweight Title
Billy Ernst (21-1-0)(8) UD12 George Fulljames (10-4-0)(2) Although Ernst suffered from poor preperation for this bout it turned out 'a walk in the park'. The challenger was badly outclassed and found himself on the canvas twice after shipping some nice right hands from Ernst. Ernst will surely find much harder fights in the year ahead. |

Here is the spreadsheet Tom. I had to convert it to an xls file because the board doesn't support the newest excel extensions. If this doesn't work, I'll go a different route.

20th May 1894, Coney Island AC
World Welterweight Title
Tommy Ryan (23-1-0)(16)(Holder) V Billy Maber (12-4-0)(9) Ryan makes his eighth defence of the title, he last defended it ten months ago. This is the first meeting of the pair. Round 1 - There were no odds offered by the bookies pre fight, it looks like they were right. Ryan (left) connected with everything he threw, Maber (right) looks dejected already Ryan 10 - 9. Round 2 - A sparring session for Ryan, Joe Walcott and Billy Smith are ringside, they will surely provide a bigger test for the champ. Ryan 20 - 18. Round 3 - Three more big right hands from Ryan and referee Caster has seen enough. Ryan totally outclassed his man. The Champion stated that he will likely make another defence of his title before being challenged by the official number one contender around year end. |

22nd May 1894, Chicago
Frank Erne (18-1-0)(13) TKO9(Cuts) Bobby Dobbs (30-2-0)(15)
Seven months ago Bobby Dobbs (left) was World Lightweight Champion and boasted a perfect unbeaten record. He apparently had the beating of all his major rivals and had witnessed the retirement of the great Jimmy Carroll. Things were looking good for the Knoxville born scrapper. Dobbs then hit the skids. He put up a pair of 'average' performances before Jack McAuliffe ripped the World crown away from him, even against mediocre opposition Dobbs has since struggled. When connections announced he was to take on once beaten Frank Erne (right) there was a run on the Swiss born fighters odds, the backers were proved correct. After an intense but even first half of the fight Erne let rip. He had already opened a cut over Dobbs right eye when a right hook form Erne sent Dobbs flying. He got to his feet but was back down immediately when he caught a right cross. Dobbs survived the round but was evidently out of gas as he returned to his stool. His experience got him through the next six minutes, but Erne then upped the ante in the ninth and had his man in trouble after heavy blows to the body. The end came with less than a minute left in the round when a right hook reopened the cut over the right eye. The referee had seen enough, as had Dobbs local support. |

26th May 1894, Coney Island AC
Welterweight
Young Corbett (23-2-1)(11) MDraw10 Mysterious Billy Smith (18-0-1)(18) Smith (left) has finally lost his perfect record after a sterile performance against Young Corbett. The step up in class was too much for Smith who was lucky to get away with a draw. It was a dull and dirty affair with Smith unable to force his way inside, Corbett appeared to have built up a decent lead but was deducted a point in the eighth round which proved crucial. If post fight rumours are correct Corbett will unbeaten Joe Walcott in the near future. Last edited by Tosti; 01-19-2010 at 04:12 AM. |

28th May, National Sporting Club, London
World Bantamweight Title
George Dixon (33-3-0)(16)(Holder) V George Corfield (12-1-2)(6) Dixon makes the fifth defence of his title. Dixon stopped Corfield (left) in three rounds when they fought for the title a year ago. Both apparently enjoyed good training camps leading up to the bout. Round 1 - Dixon lands well with the jab before finding Corfield with a sharp right cross. Dixon 10 - 9. Round 2 - Dixon lands heavily with both hands before apparently head butting his opponent, the referee doesn't like and Dixon is deducted a point. Dixon 19 - 18 Round 3 - A scrappy round which allows Corfield to land a couple of mediocre right hooks and nick the point. 28 Even Round 4 - Dixon hammers Corfield, who for the first time looks in trouble. Dixon 38 - 37 Round 5 - Dixon lands two big right hands, sending the Englishman to the ropes. Corfield looks tired as he returns to his stall. Dixon 48 - 46 Round 6 - Dixon lets Corfield nick the point again. The Canadian takes his foot off the pedal and Corfield jabs his way through the three minutes. Dixon 57 - 56 Round 7 - Dixon ducks inside a hook from his opponent and smashes a right hook below the belt of Corfield. The Englishman is done, Curtis waits for him to get to his feet and raises his hand. Dixon has been disqualified! The crowd in Covent Garden can't believe what they have seen. This could jeopardise Dixon's proposed meeting with Dick Hollywood for the Featherweight World Title. One things for sure, Dixon won't be holding two World belts at the end of June.
