Billy Hill (14-0-0)(9)(#2) KO2 George Lavigne (34-8-1)(19)(#12) There were 'pundits' before this contest who questioned Hill's lofty ranking. They were made to eat their words. Hill (below) started brightly in the first round, but blasted his way onto the world title scene at the start of the second. He landed a crushing right hand to the jaw of Lavigne and that was that. |

Frank Erne (19-1-0)(13)(#3) UD10 'Elbows' McFadden (17-3-0)(10)(#11) Erne (left) saved his best work til the last two rounds, it was just enough. There were rumours pre fight that the Swiss born stylist had suffered an interrupted training camp and that McFadden was in good condition. The fight was generally uneventful but the last round proved pivotal, with Erne landing some crisp right crosses as McFadden tried to burrow inside. Erne will now meet Billy Hill in an American Title final eliminator. |

American Lightweight Title
George Taylor (21-2-0)(9)(#5) SD12 Billy Ernst (Holder)(21-2-0)(9)(#5) This one stunk the Garden out. The fight itself was poor enough, but it appeared to nearly everyone at ringside that Ernst had done enough to retain his crown. When the result was announced there was a scuffle in the ring between the fighters cornermen. During the bout itself, the end of most rounds were met with a chorus of boos, directed mainly at Taylor. The challenger appeared to be way out of condition as he entered the ring and it showed in the fight. Taylor will likely be ordered to make a swift first defence of his title. The only obvious danger will be George Dixon, who is somewhat accident prone in my uni! There is every chance that Barry could retire undefeated. |

12th August 1894, New York
American Welterweight Title
Rube Ferns (22-0-1)(11)(Holder)(#2) SD12 Owen Ziegler (18-3-2)(10)(#4) Ferns did just enough to hang on to his title. Ziegler started well enough, causing Ferns to cover up on the ropes in the first round, but continuously took his foot off the pedal during the bout. Ferns threw more leather in the second half of the fight particularly in the last round. Ferns is unlikely to have to 'look' for his opponent in his next bout. He'll be facing the winner of the forthcoming Walcott versus West scrap, the bout will hold World Title Final Eliminator status. |

14th August 1894, National Sporting Club, London
European and Commonwealth Bantamweight Title
Billy Plimmer (25-2-2)(14)(#2)(Holder) UD12 Ike Weir (9-10-0)(5)(#5) Plimmer coasted home against the outclassed Weir. Plimmer fought a very defensive but measured fight against the Irishman, scoring with his left jab and right hand counters. The Birmingham born fighter will next fight in a World Title Final Eliminator. His opponent will be either Jimmy Barry or Johnny Murphy, the only man to have defeated Plimmer. |

24th August 1894, L Street Boxing Auditorium
American Featherweight Title
World Title Final Eliminator Johnny T Griffin (22-6-2)(14)(#1)(Challenger) UD12 Sammy Kelly (18-5-0)(2)(#2) Griffin batters Kelly to wear the belt! 1894 has been a good year for Kelly but it ended this evening. A crushing right hook from Griffin (left) in the first minute of the fight sent the Champion to the deck, it certainly gave a taste of things to come. Griffin dominated for the rest of the bout, pounding Kelly with right hands' to both head and body. Kelly was a mile behind on the scorecards and by the tenth round he had thrown caution to the winds sometime earlier. As he moved in to follow up some nice inside work he was a caught with a vicious right cross which sent him down for the second round. Although he got to his feet and enjoyed a good final stanza, Griffin won by a mile. The new American Champ will now get a chance to avenge his last defeat against Irishman Dick Hollywood, the World Title will be at stake. |

27th August 1894, Royal Albert Hall, London
Welterweight
Joe Walcott (23-0-0)(21)(#1) TKO8 Tommy West (20-3-0)(16)(#5) Ferns up next for the 'Barbados demon' Brave Welshman Tommy West knows only one way to fight, unfortunately he was tailor made for Walcott. By the time the referee had stopped the bout, West had taken a severe beating at the hands of the Walcott. West had pulled himself off the canvas twice and taken so many heavy blows most at ringside had lost count. West was brave but totally outgunned by Walcott, who will now travel back over the Atlantic to challenge Rube Ferns for the American Title. The winner of the bout will challenge Tommy Ryan for World honours. |

27th August 1894, Madison Square Garden
American Bantamweight Title
Jimmy Barry (23-0-0)(22)(#1)(Challenger) KO10 Johnny Murphy (24-4-1)(21)(#4) Barry sails to England! After a stunning knockout victory, the new American Bantamweight Champion will travel to London to cross swords with the European and Commonwealth Champ Billy Plimmer. The winner of that contest will be guaranteed a crack at George Corfield. The current World Champion, who holds the belt courtesy of a disqualification win over George Dixon, has much to fear. Barry and Murphy provided an enteraining contest with neither man giving way. It was Barry though who held all the aces, scoring heavily with right hands to both head and body. The end came via knockout. Murphy had already been on the deck before Batty unleashed a right uppercut at the end of the round, the holder was knocked cold. In a seperate, if not unconnected story, Canadian George Dixon stated that he will be campaigning at Featherweight forthwith. |

8th September 1894, California AC
World Middleweight Final Eliminator
Mike Lucie (15-1-0)(14)(#2) UD12 Billy McCarthy (26-5-3)(12)(#1) Lucie to meet LaBlanche For much of the contest Billy McCarthy rolled back the years. He dominated the middle part of the fight, letting Lucie (left) come on to him before picking him off with his left jab and right cross. It appeared to most at ringside that McCarthy was in the box seat before the start of the 10th stanza. But then disaster struck for the Australian. He walked into a heavy combination from Lucie and took the fights first knockdown, he got to his feet readily enough but was dumped again immediately after fielding a right hook. McCarthy had navigated the rest of the round well and boxed superbly through the last 3 minutes until, with a second left in the fight, Lucie landed another heavy right hook to the jaw of McCarthy and down he went for the third time. The final knockdown caused a three point swing on the judges scorecards and cost McCarthy a crack at the World Title. |

Lightweight
Frank Erne (20-1-0)(13)(#2) UD10 Billy Hill (14-1-0)(9)(#1) Hill loses his perfect record! A right cross from Erne in the eighth round was the turning point in this bout. Once again the crwod at the garden had to endure a dissapointing contest at Lightweight. Erne boxed well and it was only in the last three minutes that Hill got to him, pummeling the Swiss born man on the ropes, but it was too little too late and Erne deserved the decision. |

American Lightweight Title
Jack Everhardt (22-2-0)(13)(#4)(Challenger) UD12 George Taylor (21-3-0)(9)(#3) Everhardt takes the belt! Jack Everhardt (left) outbrawled George Taylor to lift the American Lightweight Belt. The fight was there for the taking in the seventh round when Everhardt became only the second man to deck Taylor. Taylor's last bout at the Garden was a farce, but this time the hometown boy turned up to fight. He enjoyed some early success until walking into a right cross from Everhardt. The Challenger remained on top for the rest of the contest and secured a unanimous decision. Everhardt will return to the Garden to make his first defence against Frank Erne, the bout will also hold World Title final eliminator status. |

American Welterweight Title
World Welterweight Final Eliminator Walcott marches on Joe Walcott (24-0-0)(21)(#1) UD12 Rube Ferns (22-1-1)(#2)(Holder) Rube Ferns lost his American crown and his unbeaten record with it. But He didn't go down without a fight and on occassion appeared to have 'the Barbados Demon' in trouble. However it was the two handed power of Walcott who held sway and came a away from the bout as a comfortable winner. Walcott will now have a month to prepare for a crack at Tommy Ryans' World Title. |
