20th February 1895, Madison Square Garden
Middleweight
Tommy Ryan (26-1-0)(19)(#1) KO9 Frank Craig (18-2-0)(9)(#16) Craig (right) lost nothing in defeat. He was putting up an admirable fight against the Welterweight World Champion when he fealt the power of a Tommy Ryan uppercut. At the start of the ninth stanza Ryan held a marginal advantage on the cards and Craig was giving him plenty to think about. Halfway through the round Ryan landed a big right uppercut which sent Craig to the deck, the underdog didn't back off but Ryan pummelled him until finishing him off with another right uppercut. |

22nd February 1895, Madison Square Garden
A six fight card
Middleweight Young Mitchell (30-4-1)(25)(#9) KO5 Black Pearl (14-3-0)(11)(#8) Mitchell (left) has got his career right back on track. With an entertaining bout nicely balanced, Mitchell exploded. He landed blow after blow to chin of the Pearl and polished him off with a rasping shot to the body. There was talk post fight of a match with Tommy Ryan, it would sell tickets. Middleweight Kid McCoy (22-1-1)(19)(#12) UD10 Billy Leedam (13-0-1)(3)(#5) McCoy tarnished Leedam's unbeaten record and set himself up with a potential big payday against veteran ex World Champ Jack Dempsey. McCoy was in control throughout and used his jab to great effect. Bantamweight Johnny Murphy (29-5-1)(24)(#3) TKO5 Joe Bertrand (10-5-0)(6)(#14) Bertrand could not deal with Murphys' power. The veteran had his foe on the canvas three times before referee Goddard had seen enough. Bantamweight Jimmy Gorman (11-2-0)(7)(#7) UD10 Eddie Avery (12-8-0)(7)(#10) Avery was on the deck on five seperate occassions and did well to survive. Gorman is slowly entering the World title scene in a weak division. Welterweight Young Corbett (27-3-1)(13)(#6) TKO9(cuts) Rube Ferns (25-1-1)(13)(#2) Tough luck on Ferns. The ex American Champ was on top throughout and had seemingly dealt with a cut he had received in the second stanza. Ferns dominated from the outside landing jabs and right crosses with great effect. The end came with thirty seconds left in the penuiltimate round, Corbett (centre) landed a right cross which reopened Ferns cut and the claret flowed. American Welterweight Title Joe Walcott (Holder)(26-1-0)(23)(#1) KO10 Mysterious Billy Smith (20-1-1)(20)(#8) It took ten rounds for Walcott (right) to dispatch the brave Smith. Walcott was on top for much of the fight but Smith enjoy some good moments and managed to outwork Walcott inside. The champ employed a defensive strategy until the tenth round when he smelt blood. Smith had already heaved himself off the canvas when he walked into a right cross from Walcott which ended the bout. |
