Dempsey lines up against Baker again
I a rather dull Middleweight division, World Champion Jack Dempsey will meet Billy Baker for the third time, it will be his second defence of the title.
Baker won a WBF final eliminator bout against Tom Barry when the latter broke his hand in the 7th round. |

10th December 1885 – New Orleans
Inaugural USBA Lightweight Title.
Jimmy Carroll (10-2-1) became the first holder of the USBA Lightweight crown on the Myer V McAuliffe world title undercard. Both fighters suffered knockdowns during an entertaining battle. The fight ended in the 10th round when Gilmore was unable to get to his feet after being dropped by a right hand to the body. The scorecards at the end of round 9 were all 85-84 in favour of Gilmore. |

10th December 1885 – New Orleans
WBF Lightweight Title
Billy Myer (12-2) V Jack McAuliffe (11-2-1) 15 Rounds The two met previously 18 months ago when Myer won a wide margin points victory against a 'out of condition' McAuliffe. Both fighters enter the ring in excellent condition. Round 1 - In a sensational start McAuliffe drops the champion with his first punch, a right to the body. Myer gets up immediately and evades the challenger for the rest of the round. Round 3 - With McAuliffe continuing to dominate behind his jab and with his left eye swelling, things are looking bleak for the champion, then with a minute left in the round he floors the challenger with a right cross. Round 4 - McAuliffe is back onn track, once again he dominates the round. Myer is going for the KO, he must figure his eye won't last the 15. 38/36 McAuliffe. Round 6 - At the end of the round Myer trudges back to his corner, apart from the flash knockdown in the 3rd the fight has been one sided. Round 9 - Extraordinary round. Myer, as if going for broke, comes out and lands four big shots before McAuliffe hammers a right cross on the oncoming Myer's chin. The champion goes to the canvas and rises at the 5 count. The champion's chance could have gone. Round 11 - McAuliffe dominates but has a point deducted for use of his elbows. Round 13 - After a barrage of punches, the referee steps in and takes a look at Myer's eye, he has seen enough. McAuliffe is the new World Lightweight Champion at the age of 19. The scorecards at the end of round 12 were (114-112),(115-109) and (115-109) all in favour of McAuliffe. ________________________________________ |

WBF World Boxing – The year ahead
The WBF are in the process of formulating rules governing title defences and their regularity. Champions are likely to be encouraged to defend their titles on a more regular basis, voluntary defences against top 10 ranked opponents could become a regular feature.
Australian Peter Jackson has voiced his intentions to defend his Heavyweight crown on home soil whenever possible. Now that Jackson has the title in his hands it could remain there for some time. The Middleweight and Welterweight divisions are somewhat dull, although there are rumours that both Jem Carney and Billy Myer could go up a weight and challenge the ageing Tom McCalpine for his Welterweight title. The Lightweight division is full of interest, McAuliffe's victory in December has raised the chances of a divisional KO tournament to establish a new no. 1 contender. Whether or not ex world champs Myer and Carney throw their hat in the ring is another matter. |

WBF Champions Gala - 15th May 1886
Madison Square Garden – New York
In a night designed to increase the exposure of the WBF, all four of its Champions made successful defences of their titles. Lightweight – Jack McAuliffe TKO Joe Heiser (7th Round) Welterweight – Tom McAlpine KO Paddy Carey (12th Round) Middleweight – Jack Dempsey TKO W C McClelllan (10th Round) Heavyweight – Peter Jackson KO Frank Slavin (1st Round) All four champions were heavy favourites and none of them ever looked like disappointing the capacity crowd. Fitzsimmons continues to impress
The prolific Bob Fitzsimmons continued his winning run with a one sided points victory over Jim Dunn. The victory has set up a World Title final eliminator bout against the winner of the forthcoming John L Sullivan V George Godfrey bout.

Inaugural USBA Middleweight Title
George LaBlanche (8-4) V Jack Fogarty (5-2)
In an excellent scrap, rejuvenated Canadian George LaBlanche became the first holder of the USBA Middleweight Title when stopping Jack Fogarty at the end of the 8th of a scheduled 12 rounder. The scorecards were even at the start of round 8 when LaBlanche upped the tempo and pinned Fogarty against the ropes with a barrage of punches. |

29th July 1886
USBA Heavyweight Title – Madison Square Garden
George Godfrey (9-6) V John L Sullivan (11-4) Godfrey enters the ring in tip top shape whilst the ‘Boston Strongboy’ appears to have made the same mistake as before, by undertraining for the fight. Sullivan started brightly and in the second round landed a wild overhand right which put Godfrey down for a count of 4. In the third and fourth stanza Godfrey found his rhythm and outboxed Sullivan, he then managed to level the knockdown count by putting Sullivan down momentarily in the fifth round after a right hand combination. The momentum in he fight swung again in the sixth when Sullivan put Godfrey on the canvas again, the Canadian barely made it to his feet but bravely boxed out the rest of the round. That was to be the last knockdown of the fight. Godfrey took charged and outjabbed his tiring and patently unfit opponent. Godfrey hung on to his crown by way of split decision. The judges had (113-112)(112-113)(115-110) in favour of the Canadian. After the fight Sullivan ‘cried foul’ and demanded a rematch, he would be better advised to spend more time in the gym for such an important bout. Godfrey is now 3-0 against Sullivan. |

20th August 1886 - Chicago
USBA Lightweight Title, WBF Lightweight Final Eliminator
Jimmy Carroll (USBA Champ)(10-2-1) V Andy Bowen (8-2) 12 rounds The pair met once before in April of 1884 when Carroll won a split decision. Bowen enters the ring in fine condition whilst Carroll looks bone dry. After dominating the first round Carroll threw a left hook at the start of round 2 which caused a large gash over Bowen's right eye, thirty seconds later the referee stepped in and ended the fight. This was a first defence of his USBA title by Carroll who will now get a crack at the world crown later this year. |

WBF Lightweight Title - Chicago - 20th Aug 1886
Jack McAuliffe (13-2-1)(Holder) V Jack Keenan (7-4-1)
This is the first meeting between the pair. Pre fight rumours of a 'difference of opinion' between McAuliffe and his handlers were doing the rounds pre fight. Keenan looks toned considering he took the fight on short notice. Rd 1 - McAuliffe splits Keenan's nose with the first punch of the fight. Rd 3 - With McAuliffe dominating, and with a swollen right eye and bleeding from the nose, things are not looking good for the challenger. 30/27 McAuliffe Rd 4 - With Keenan being outclassed and bleeding profusely, the referee calls an end to this mis-match. Yet another dominating performance from McAuliffe in his second defence of the title. |

17th September 1886 - MSG
WBF Heavyweight Final Eliminator
Bob Fitzsimmons (13-1) V George Godfrey (10-6) The fighters met for the fourth time. It was 3-0 to Fitzsimmons, two by KO and one by stoppage. Both entered the ring in excellent condition with strong rumours that if Fitz lost he would drop down to the middleweight division. The prolific Fitzsimmons KO'd George Godfrey for the third time after 2:28 of round 3. Fitzsimmons once again dominated the fight with his harder punching before landing a right hand combination which ended the bout. Fitzsimmons will now get a chance to regain his World Heavyweight title before year end. |
