14th September 1888 - MSG
USBA Bantamweight Title
Tommy Spider Kelly (11-0) KO5 Paddy Snow (3-6-1) LW - Bobby Dobbs (8-0) TKO8 Buck McKenna (2-7-2) WBF Middleweight Final Eliminator Jack Dempsey (13-1) KO5 Bob Fitzsimmons (17-4) The first meeting between the two ex world champions. Dempsey achieved his best career victory in a brief but exciting encounter. After being 'robbed' of his World crown it would appear that he wants it back in a hurry. Fitz started well as the pair stood 'toe to toe', but as Dempsey began to get on top in the third round Fitz appeared to totally run out of gas. Dempsey's domination was total in the fifth round as he picked off Fitz at will and with 30 seconds left in the round it appeared that his corner wanted to stop the fight, Dempsey had other ideas and landed a huge uppercut which knocked the Englishman out cold. An exceptionally impressive performance from Dempsey. Is Fitsimmons struggling to make the weight! Last edited by Tosti; 12-19-2005 at 02:12 PM. |

14th September - MSG
Main Event
WBF Middleweight Title George LaBlanche (Holder) (11-4) V Jack Fogarty (11-3) Rounds 1 to 6 - A very close and exciting affair with Fogarty holding a slim advantage. Both fighters ignore there defensive responsibilities and serve up a crowd pleaser. Round 8 - With the end of the round beckoning Fogarty lands a right hook and scores the first KD of the fight. Round 9 - Fogarty appears to be gaining control until with 30 seconds left in the round the Champion lands a huge uppercut which evens out the KD count. Fogarty barley makes it to his feet. Rounds 10 to 15 - With Fogarty's right eye virtually shut, he tries to hang on to his early rounds advantage. LaBlanche lands blow after blow but is unable to stop the challenger. The final bell goes. The judges score it 142 Even 144-142 Fogarty 144-140 LaBlanche DRAW! LaBlanche hangs on to his title in what surely will end up as the fight of the year! |

Chicago - 18th October 1888
MW - Dominic McCaffrey (13-2) UD10 Pete McCoy (8-8-2)
Good performance from McCaffrey who coasted to a wide margin points victory. McCaffrey immediately 'called out' Bob Fitzsimmons who won a controversial points victory over McCaffrey last year. MW - Irish Jack Burke (7-0) TKO5 Jack Langdon (1-7) Burke makes it 7-0 in his first year as a pro. USBA WW Final Eliminator - Tommy Ryan (12-1) TKO4 Paddy Duffy (12-5-2) Young Tommy Ryan responded brilliantly to his last fight cuts loss by destroying ex-World Champ Paddy Duffy within 4 rounds. Ryan was on top throughout and when he floored Duffy halfway through the 4 round the ref stepped in almost immediately. Ryan will now get a crack at the USBA crown before he strives to lift the World Title Belt. USBA Bantamweight Title - George Dixon (15-3) KO10 Tommy Spider Kelly (11-1)(Holder) Eighteen year old Canadian George Dixon became the USBA Bantamweight Champion and ended Tommy Kelly's unbeaten record. Dixon dominated from the openeing bell and put the exhausted Kelly on the canvas for the first time in the 7th round before ending the bout with an uppercut in the 10th. Kelly didn't win a round and fought the secon half of the fight with his right eye closing. |

Madison Square Garden - 7th November 1888
LW - Bobby Dobbs (9-0) UD10 JJ McGinty (5-9)
WBF Lightweight Final Eliminator Jack McAuliffe (20-3-1) TKO9 George Lavigne (17-3) This much anticipated bout did not fail to live up to expectations, it seems that whenever these two get into a ring there is never a lack of excitement. McAuliffe, not for the first time, did not look in the best of condition as he entered the ring, but he could not have hoped for a better start as the first punch he threw caused a bad cut over Lavigne's left eye. The bout swayed back and forth until the fourth stanza when the Irishman started to get on top and pinned Lavigne to the ropes. Lavigne game as ever fought back, but the cut he received in the first round ultimately proved to be his downfall, when after the third time it had reopened the referee called time in the ninth round. The scorecards at the time of the stoppage had it 76 even twice and 78-73 McAuliffe on the third card. USBA Lightweight Title Billy Dacey (11-7-1) KO7 Billy Frazier (7-7) In what was always going to be a bruising encounter, the thus far disappointing Dacey produced a career best performance to KO Billy Frazier and become the new USBA Lightweight Champion. In an exciting fight Frazier was counted out after a vicious combination from Dacey after already being on the canvas twice. This was Frazier's third consecutive stoppage loss and a drop in class would seem appropriate. Dacey was three points ahead on all cards at the time of the stoppage. WBF World Lightweight Title Patsy Kerrigan (5-6) (Challenger) TKO7 Jimmy Carroll (18-4-1) Unheralded Patsy Kerrigan ended the 'dream' run of Jimmy Carroll and in doing so became the new Lightweight World Champion. Unfortunately for Carroll it was a cut that ended his reign and thus deprived the public of a rematch between Carroll and McAuliffe. It would be a major surprise if Kerrigan was able to defeat the No.1 contender McAullife, although Kerrigan's camp stated that they may schedule a voluntary defence before the fight with McAuliffe. |

20th November 1888 - California AC
MW - Dominic McCaffrey (14-2) KO2 Mike Boden (2-6-2)
MW - Irish Jack Burke (8-0) MD10 Jim McHugh (2-9) Only a strong finish preserves Burke's unbeaten record. WW - Jack C McGee (13-4) TKO2 Jem Carney (14-6) Scintillating performance from McGee against an ageing Carney. WBF World Welterweight Title Jack McGinty (Holder)(10-2-1) KO14 Billy Myer (18-6) Jack McGinty made a successful first defence of his World crown when Billy Myer was counted out in the penultimate round after a bodyshot from the Champion. The odds had the fight firmly in Myer's favour, but he was never able to dominate and was put down in the 10th round after a right uppercut from McGinty. At the time of the stoppage the cards were (125-121)(126-121) and (122-124) in favour of McGinty. |

Madison Square Garden - WBF World Middleweight Title George LaBlanche (11-4-1) V Jack Dempsey (13-1) Dempsey out to gain revenge for his only defeat against 'The Marine'. 12th December 1888 - Madison Square Garden
HW - Dick Matthews (7-1) TKO1 James Dalton (2-4)
MW - Young Mitchell (9-0) TKO10 Young Billy Manning (3-10) MW - Dominic McCaffrey (15-2) UD10 Paddy Norton (0-11) LW - Andy Bowen (12-7) TKO3 Jack Hanley (1-7) MW - Jack Fogarty (12-3-1) KO5 Paddy Norton (0-11) Main Event WBF World Middleweight Title George LaBlanche (Holder)(11-4-1) V Jack Dempsey (13-1)(USBA) Dempsey lost the World title by a disputed split decision in the pair's only previous meeting. Both fighters enter the ring in excellent condition with Dempsey the 2/1 fav. The referee for the contest is Jem Mace. Round 1 - The Champion starts well and is able to land his punches with surprising ease. Round 2 - LaBlanche lands a huge bodyshot and Dempsey hits the canvas. He struggles to his feet at the 8 count and manages to survive until the bell, however he returns to his stool with bad swelling around his right eye. Round 4 - Dempsey stands his ground and edges his first round, surely he will have to get behind his jab if he is to see out the 15 rounds. Round 6 - Dempsey continues to be drawn into a war, his eye is closing. Ringside has it 59/54 LaBlanche. Round 8 - Dempsey thinks his eye won't last the fight, he goes for the KO as LaBlanche waves him in. Dempsey's tactics work as he lands blow after blow before putting LaBlanche down for a flash knockdown. The Champ gets to his feet with 3 seconds left in the round. Ringside has it 77/74 LaBlanche. Round 9 - Great comeback round from LaBlanche, Dempsey trudges back to his stool with his eye damage worsening. Round 11 - At the bell there are 4 rounds left, both fighters are tired but Dempsey's eye is still on the brink of causing a premature end to proceedings. Round 13 - It is testament to Dempsey's corner, that the pre fight favourite is still in with a chance. At the end of the round LaBlanche lands another knockdown blow which Dempsey gets straight up from. Dempsey needs a KO, ringside has it 126/119 LaBlanche. Round 15 - Big right from LaBlanche and Dempsey is down for the third time, he rises at the eight count but has two and a half minutes left in the fight to survive. A left hook and Dempsey is down again, could this be his first stoppage loss. The ex champ survives but is battered and bruised. Dempsey will take some time to get over this fight. LaBlanche is a shock wide margin points winner. The judges had it (144-136)(145-135) and (143-137) Last edited by Tosti; 01-04-2006 at 03:50 AM. |

New Titles
The WBF has announced that by the end of 1889 there will be two additional World Championship belts awarded at Featherweight and Bantamweight.
It is likely that the WBF will organise elimination tournaments in both divisions to determine who will fight for the respective titles. British and Commonwealth The WBF has also sanctioned a British and Commonwealth belt to be awarded in each of the weight divisions. Last edited by Tosti; 01-07-2006 at 05:43 AM. |

28th December 1888 - Rushcutters Bay
Main Support Bout
FW - Young Griffo (17-2) UD10 Eugene Hornbacher (2-11) Another straightforward points victory for Griffo who will have his sights firmly set on a World Title next year. Main Event WBF World Heavyweight Title Peter Jackson (Holder)(16-1) V James Corbett (USBA)(14-0) The first meeting between the pair. Both enter the ring in top order. Round 1 - Corbett fires a jab for the first punch of the fight but Jackson counters and catches the American 'cold', his knee touches the canvas and he springs up after taking a 1 count, a disasterous start for the challenger. Round 2 - The fight goes from bad to worse for Corbett, now he is cut inside his left eyebrow. Round 4 - Two good recovery rounds from Corbett, boxing well he is able to defend his eye injury. Round 6 - Two quiet rounds, Jackson has gone into his shell. Ringside has it even. Round 9 - Jackson reacts to the crowds urgings and lands his best shot since the first round, a big right cross followed up with a wicked bodyshot which puts Corbett down for the second time in the fight. A tough round for the challenger, all his hard work has been undone by the two knockdowns. Round 12 - Corbett's cut from the second stanza has reopened and blood is trickling over his left eye, the fight is tight. Ringside has it 116/115 Jackson. Styles make fights, and this has been no classic. With two rounds left Ringside has it even, both fighters appear relatively fresh. Round 14 - Corbett is bleeding again, the referee consults the doctor who lets Corbett continue. Good round for Jackson who appears to be edging it. Round 15 - A big right from Jackson and Corbett's face is awash with blood, hte referee pulls him to the corner and the doctor has seen enough, its over! Jackson hangs on to his title. Corbett feels hard done by after losing his unbeaten record, however he was behind on all three cards going into the last round. For the record the scorecards read (136-132)(135-132) and (134-133).
