Tony Almeida

Mark,

Info on Tony Almeida from the March, 1943 edition of Ring magazine (p.28)

Professional boxing suffered another loss when Anthony C. Almeida of Bristol, R.I., a Portuguese-American middleweight with an excellent record was killed in action in the Pacific arena. Word was received from the navy department on December 15th that the young boxer, who started his career in 1940, was a marine casualty. Though his parents were not notified on what battlefield he was killed presumed it was in the Solomon Islands where Tony was stationed as a member of the Leatherneck Division.

Almeida started his ring career on April 22, 1940 with a four round loss to Eddie Ardourian and from that point until his enlistment on January 22, 1942, he dropped only one contest, to Jackie Caprell in eight rounds and scored 11 victories, five by knockouts. He fought as an amateur around New Bedford and Fall river the year before turning pro.

Smile More thanks!

Boxscribe;

I appreciate the Almeida information and pic. Will add the factoids to his bio in the fighter file I completed last night.

Also, many thanks for the wealth of photos you are contributing to my 1940s universe and the TBCB community in general. Your efforts are much appreciated. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Harry! One of the many noble souls who gave their life during WWII.

Note: Before I go on with the want list, I'm going to finish the second 1940s update and ship it to CornerWork.com, so it may be a week or so before I continue with letters M-Z. Thanks for all the help, guys.

Also, I'm off for the next week so it would be good time for me to look through my photos if you want to go through your M-Z wanted list Mark.

I think there may be some repeats or alternates.

I have also posted Johnny Addie (announcer).

I think these two guys must be brothers. Anyone know for sure?

That's it for the Referee and Redhead mags. I will start on the Knockout mags I have tomorrow and then maybe the Ring magazines.
