Austin--My Father's Fighter

Austin is still having trouble posting fighter files to this thread so here are a few more of his cobtributions. He wrote:

Here are 3 fighters from My Father's Fighter by Ronald K. Fried. Josiha
"Nightstick" Johnson I based on Roy Jones, Jr.; Mickey Davis as a weaker
version of Yvon Durelle; and Nestor Vasquez on Leonardo Rogers but as a
boxer not a slugger. I could have rated to other fighters, but I feel that
every fictional fighter should be based on something substantial to be
realistic. Rating a boxer because his name was used in a sentence is the
same as creating a fighter out of your head. As I keep reading I'll look
for more fighter with 1 or 2 ratings for the game. My trip to the library
created a list of over a dozen books to hunt down.

This will be my last post to this thread until I return from Canastota.

I watched my tape of Diggstown and want to reread the novel even more now.

Thanks. Having fun there is a given. Wish everybody could make it there. My first visit was a couple of years ago after years of hoping to get there. It was like going on a HAJ to Mecca. The HOF itself, as a building, didn't impress me overly much. I was expecting there to be a large boxing research library, and was disappointed on that score, but the aura surrounding induction weekend, the total immersion with the sport, and the approachability of the fighters and ex-fighters combine into an awesome experience. The fighters are all generally happy to be there and really appreciative of the boxing fans who come. Wereinto collecting autographs I could have gathered scores of them without working up a sweat. It's just an incredible time.

Sounds like a real great time. I would love to go one day and meet up with some of the TB loyalists. They should have a boxing library. I know some of the other sport HOF do. I wonder why?

They do have a research collection of materials, such as a complete run of The Ring. Ice Tea has, I know, used their materials. Much New York Commission stuff. They aren't a prominant feature at the hall, however. As a librarian, I was hoping for more.

could someone post a picture of Pat Comiskey as Gus Dundee so I might try to down load it. Any other suggestions??

Thanks to my daughter Rhiannon, I'm finally able to post boxers to this site. She figured what was wrong with my pop-up menu. These 3 boxers are from the novel The Tomato Can by Ron Ross.

Thanks for the contributions. I'm currently reading Diggstown. The book is a bit different from the film.

Bear,

In the short story The Croxley Master by A. Conan Doyle, Silas Craggs fights the who's who of English boxing. He wins most of these bouts, as a result I gave him a 6 rating. If the author says his main character is a wonderful fighter and fails to support it he's not getting a 10 rating from me! The Croxley Master was an excellent short story by the way!!
