They should be coming soon, Austin. I'll concentrate on the movie version and rate the characters as heavies and post them here. The Diggs character in the book didn't figure into things very much and was a black light-heavy. In the film he is a white ex-heavyweight and is more involved in the plot. I won't look at your rating til I finish mine. We can get some grounds for comparison of how we rate guys. I'll also do my version of the book characters so we can get a comparitive handle on how we rate guys and exchange some thoughts about that. Carry on from out converstaions at Canastota.

From the Book Poor Nigger by Orio Vergani

This piece of boxing fiction is loosely based on the life of Battling Siki. Considering the time of publication 1930, the adultery and interracial sex must have caused the book to be banned in Boston. For the most part the book was a narrative told in the 3rd person with a sad ending!

George Boykin, his character was based on Battling Siki

Martin Bouttier, lhw, trained in the same gym as George Boykin when Boykin first came to France.

Gilbert Faber(207); fw the Parisian pugilist, fair-haired and handsome, swift and light-footed.

Stephane Francois, lhw champion based on George Carpentier

Marcel Leroux (181), lhw champion of France, who had lost big fight in England

From the Book Boxing Stories by Robert E. Howard

Sailor Steve Costigan a tough game man who, though never rated better than a second-class man, yet gave some first-raters terrific battles. This is Howard's main character in most of his stories. Very difficult to rate as he's dropped often but never KO'd.

From the story The Pit of the Serpent

One-Round Grannigan, former champion of the Sea Girl, lost to both Costigan & Slade by KO

Battling Slade—HW champion of the Dauntless, an overgrown Young Griffo. The dastardly villain of this tale.

Mike Leary of the Blue Whale who once beat Costigan.

Boatswain Hagney, HW champion of the British Asiatic naval fleet, who once KO’d Slade.

Bear,

When I saw your post I was so excited. When I opened it there were no new boxers. What are you working on? I hope it includes some FW's are there only 9 in the Universe.

I have loads of films on tap as well as some short stories. I've been muddling along. Had a bit of a health scare recently. Medical tests put me on the border line for some serious problems. I've have been getting at least a half hour of exercise a day (mostly wallking) and being very careful with my diet. In the past month I've gained two notches on my belt and no longer look like a stunt double for James Toney. I've got an October 1st deadline for a work related project looming over my shoulder and I've got to teach myself cascading style sheets in order to complete it.
I went cold turkey on caffeine, which is something I never thought possible. Strangely I don't feel the need to be jump started every morning.
The walking has given me some increased flexibility and my arthritis seems a little less cranky.
I don't see many feathers on the immediate horizen but I'll keep the class in mind. As far as film fiction goes the Dead End Kids fight related films could provide some lower weight classes. Gorcy, Hall, and Jordan as well as Frankie Darrow would be lower weight group types. Darro played a feather in the 1938 film born to fight. I don't recall if I done that one yet but I can push it up.

Ryan "Mister Unstopable" Taherne MW 3 slugger

Little given on the latter guy in the story, not even a weight class so I gave him one and made him a tomato can. Making best guess at ages and career dates and years of birth

Corner men: Trainers and Cutmen include the following if anyone wishes to create some fictional trainers.

Big Jim Duvall
Trainer. migrated to Los Angeles after working in Texas and louisiana. Took Harlan Tucker on as apprentice 20 yrs earlier.

Kirby Daniels
Trainer good at honing a fighter that knows what he is doing. thin on patience. Rants and raves if he has to work on fundamentals.

Frankie Preston
Trainer solid works with men of any age and builds on what's there.

Tito Carvell
Trainer one of the best. Breaks down every fighter and starts over. insists on a new foundation. Veterans don't like him.

Frank Tanner
Trainer and cut man. Often worked with Harlan Tucker as cutman.

Manny gonzalez
Trainer of Zakharov. Zak doesn't listen to his advice concerning fast boxers.

Conrad Volker
Cornerman cutman woking with Manny and Tucker for Zakharov.
