The Softer They Fall

"Hogan's Heroes"
The Softer They Fall (1970)
Episode Cast (in credits order)
Bob Crane ... Col. Robert E. Hogan
Werner Klemperer ... Col. Wilhelm Klink
John Banner ... Sgt. Hans Georg Schultz
Robert Clary ... Cpl. Louis LeBeau
Richard Dawson ... Cpl. Peter Newkirk
Ivan Dixon ... Sgt. James 'Kinch' Kinchloe
Larry Hovis ... Sgt. Andrew Carter
Leon Askin ... General der Infantrie Albert Burkhalter
rest of cast listed alphabetically:
Jon Cedar ... Second Corporal
Chuck Hicks ... Bruno
Lev Mailer
James Savett ... First Corporal
John Stephenson ... Major Rudel
Frankie Van ... Referee

Battling Bruno, a guard a Stalag 13 has reached the finals of a boxing tournament. He has 13 straight KO wins. He can't counter punch, has bad footwork, timing, and breathing. Kinch serves as his sparring patner and decks him. This sets up a bout between Bruno and Kinch that serves to cover Hogan's activities. The unconscious Bruno wins the match because Hogan threw the towel before a count was started. (Klink would have been sent to the Russian Front had Bruno lost.) Bruno's Gloves were loaded for the fight with Kinch. Frankie Van, the ubiquitous referee of boxing films served in this role as a Nazi named Schmeltzer. If I heard correctly, Bruno's scheduled opponent in the tourney was named Joe Kandinsky. Kinch had been a former Golden Glover. Judges for the fight were Wilhelm Klink, Major Rudel and Captain Stahl.

Sgt. James Kinchloe HW either 2
Battling Bruno HW slugger 0
Joseph Kandinsky HW slugger 0

Rodney Stone

Rodney Stone
by Arthur conan Doyle
1896
Smith Elder and Co., London

Set in England in 1800 Rodney Stone is a novel of the prize ring set in the Napoleonic era. I used Christopher's prize ring templates as a starting point for most of these fighters.

Champion Harrison: James Harrison, The Friar's Oak Smithy, earned the mom de guerre Champion in a bout with then title holder, Gentleman Jackson. Most thought that interference by the Berkshire
beaks that resulted in a draw prevented Harrison from taking the title.
Nearly killed Black Baruk with a punch. Baruk hoverd on death's door for three weeks. Never lost a prize ring bout. Retired at request of wife. Made a single fight comeback vs. Crab Wilson in 1803. A grat glutton and finishing hitter, but slow of foot and short-armed. Patrons were Edward Barrington, Lord Avon and Sir Charles "Buck" Tregellis.
Uncle of Boy Jim Harrison.

Boy Jim Harrison: Assumed to be the nephew of Champion Harrison, who raised him. At age 16 beat Gypsy Lee in an impromptu battle. Challenges all at a coach house occupied by Corinthians. Challenge answered by a belligerant Joe Berks (6' 196). Ko's the intoxicated Berks in 4 rounds. Punishing hitter. Sir charles "Buck" Tregellis selects him initially to fight Crab Wilson. Replaced in bout by Champion Harrison. Real identity revealed to be James Barrington, don of Edward Barrington, Lord of Avon.

Crab Wilson: The guard he assumed earned him his nickname, Crab. Known to be good at sparring. Little experience in the prize ring but beat Noah James in a bye battle. Patron is Sir Lothian Hume. Fights Champion Harrison earns a draw when the ring is cut. Saved from losing bout. Trained by Capt. Barclay.

Noah James: The Guardsman. Tough, game, bottom fighter from Cheshire. Once fought 50 rounds with his jaw cracked in three places. Lost to Crab Wilson.

Gipsy Lee: Hailed from Burgess Hill. Lost to 16 year old Boy Jim Harrison in an impromtu bout.
