The Early Years

The fighters I'm going to post on here are from the 'pioneer' era. They are all fighters which have little or no documented fights but who were part of the scene in there era.

As an example the first file will be Patsy Kerrigan who has only two bouts on Boxrec, but who apparently gave as good as he got against Jack McAuliffe. Obviously the ratings are highly speculative but help pad out any early universes.

Any comments or research help would be appreciated.

Please post any files that you think would be relevant.

Once again, these files are speculative so use them at your peril!

Kerrigan, Patsy - 234212/LW/Prime5

Original file source - unsure.

Only two fights on Boxrec. Little other data to go on. He was part of John L Sullivans 'travelling circus'. According to the 'Legendary Boxers' book by Billy Edwards he 'held his own' during a ten round draw with Jack McAuliffe.

Any additional information would be appreciated.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Jack Fogarty - 68559/MW/Prime7

Only a couple of fights against database opponents.

The stand out was a 27 round KO loss to Jack 'NP' Dempsey. He apparently received a terrible beating but impressed his opponent with his bravery. Dempsey refused to give Fogarty a rematch.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Cushing, Mike - 100470/FW/Prime1

Three fights on Boxrec.

IBRO -- Mike Cushing

The IBRO article gives a lot better outline, although he only met a handful of fighters that are in the database.

He was disqualified for holding when he fought Jack McAuliffe in the final of the Billy Madden tournament.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

I had two of three.

I've added a fair bit to the 'front page' and messed with the ratings.

As we go along they will mainly be fighters that aren't in my uni but who I have a photo for.

BTW I bought a book on the history of South African boxers, it has a load of good mugshots. I'll get round to posting them soon. In the meantime if there are any you are 'desperate' for let me know and I'll see if they are in the book.

Seeing how I haven't even transferred over my picture file from 2.0 to 2.5, I'm not sure how much pics matter to me LOL

Foley, Larry - 40389/HW/Prime6

Cyber Boxing Zone -- Larry Foley

Foley was a pioneer in early boxing styles and techniques and trained many fighters in Australia. His school of boxing in Sydney was famous and produced such fighters as Peter Jackson, Frank "Paddy" Slavin, Tom Lees, Mick Dooley and Jim Hall.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Davis, Charley - 130322/MW/Prime3

His only fight in Boxrec was a disqualification loss to Tom Allen. He had come out of retirement for the fight and was in bad condition. He died not long after the fight from 'alcoholic excesses'.

Previously he had won a couple of open weight competitions, once beating Bat Mullins in the final.

He was also English Middleweight Champion.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Elliot, Jimmy - 32576/HW/Prime3

His only 'Boxrec' contest was a third round stoppage loss to John L Sullivan, he was 44 years of age when he stepped through the ropes.

'Legendary Boxers of the Golden Age' lists the following bouts.

25th May 1861 W Pts Nobby Clark 34 rounds
6th Jan 1862 D Hen Winkle 2 hours 15 minutes
April 1863 LDISQ Jim Dunn.

Elliot spent two years in prison.

W Pts Bill Davis 11 rounds.
W Pts Charley Gallagher 23 rounds.
L Pts John J Dwyer 12 rounds

4th July 1882 LKO3 John L Sullivan

Elliot was shot dead a year later.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Campbell, Dave - 26502/MW/Prime1

IBRO -- Dave Campbell

Only 4 fights on Boxrec, but much more detail at above link.

In probably his most famous bout he managed to go the distance in 10 one sided rounds against Jim Corbett.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

White, Ted - 57891/MW/Prime5

3 fights in Boxrec, icluding a standout points win over Kid McCoy.

'English Boxing Champions' - Bill Matthews

Much more 'flesh' in this book.

Won ABA (Amateur) Heavyweight Title in 1887
Turned Pro in 1888
Pts victory over Bat Mullins in 1889
Stoppage loss to Billy McCarthy in 1892
Pts victory over George Chrisp to win the English title.
Pts win over Kid McCoy in 1895 (it appeared that McCoy 'looked after himself' in this contest)
Last fight in 1896, stopping Dido Plumb whilst defending his English Middleweight Title.

This file is speculative and not part of the database.

I think I had rated and posted Charlie Davis some time ago along with Denny Harrington.
Bill Mathews' book was a major source for me. Glad to see that someone else has a copy. I did a few of the Bow cup winners. It was right before the website meltdown a few years ago. The meltdown got me sidetracked and I never picked the ball back up.

Hi Bear

I picked up a copy on ebay.

Any fighters you fancy posting on here who have no or little Boxrec 'form' would be great.

Also if you think any I am posting are garbage let me know

Causer, Tom - 61826/FW/Prime2

Tom Causer

Held 5 bouts against database opposition.

WPts Tom Ireland(twice)
LKO1 Dick Burge
WTKO7 Dick Burge (Recorded elsewhere as a foul disq)
LKO5 Eddie Connolly

His 'English Boxing Champions' record of W31/L3/D2 is made up of relative unknowns(to me anyway) leaving him very difficult to rate.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Spurden, Harry - 99993/FW/Prime3

Harry Spurden

Another tricky one!

Only info I could find on him comes from 'English Boxing Champions', where he has a W19/L7/D1 record.

It is difficult to glean how many stopage victories he had.

He was the English Featherweight Champion and held the English '9 stone' title.

He had 4 database opponents.

LPts4 Stanton Abbot
L10 Tom Ireland
W3 Fred Johnson
WKO2 Fred Johnson

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.
