Jem Williams (142965)

Note * Boxrec has 'Jim', most of the stuff I have dug up about Williams has 'Jem', the picture is named Jem.

Career Record: Boxrec; W9(KO 3)/L11(KO 5)/D0
The English Champions (Bill Matthews); W36(KO 3)/L11(KO 5)/D0

Williams held the following domestic titles;

English 6st 8lbs Title
English 8st 2lbs - 8st 4lbs Title
English 8st 4lbs Title
English Bantamweight Title

Williams fought 8 fights against official TB database men and 3 more contests against fighters rated in this thread.

Whilst reporting on the June 1899 points defeat against Harry Ware, the 'Mirror of Life' described Williams as a 'clever two handed fighter'. It would appear that after Williams defeated Pedlar Palmer, lifting the British Bantamweight belt at the NSC, great things were expected of him by the members of the club. His career actually tailed off after this win.

Four of the five stoppage losses incurred by Williams took place at the end of his 14 year career. These heavy losses were suffered against the likes of Kid McFadden, Johnny Summers and the brilliant if aging George Dixon.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.
Here's another pick of McCarthy, along with a little writeup from the Salt Lake City Tribune - 08/03/02 - prior to his fight against "Chicago" Jack Daly. Daly was DQ'ed for repeated head butting in the contest.

I also have picks of Roy Condie and Tommy Markham. Markham won by KO in 7.

Jack McClelland (64565)

Boxrec: W28(KO 15)/L12(KO 5)/D20

A fighter I would love to see some footage of.

His 15 round points victory over Abe Attell is a head scrtacher. Attell was World Featherweight Champion at the time.

His career also boasts a disqualification win over Willie Fitzgerald and a KO victory over Brooklyn Tommy Sullivan.

Any thoughts or input on McClelland would be appreciated.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Kid Herman (73556)

Herman had 18 bouts against TB database opponents.

In the twilight of his career he drew over 20 rounds with Abe Attell for the World Featherweight Title and was knocked out by Joe Gans in the eighth round of a World Lightweight title bout.

The Gans fight can be seen here.

YouTube - Joe Gans vs. Kid Herman

Herman was 'put' into retirement after a gruelling 15 round beating from Packey McFarland.

His two stoppage losses in 65 bouts bear testament to his durability, though Gans did knock him cold.

Wins over Benny Yanger, Austin Rice and Brooklyn Tommy Sullivan were the highlights of Herman's career.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

I wonder what the author would have thought of the current knife crime issue and the high speed rail link to the South of France!

Hi

Good list!

I will make sure I stick them on my to-do list. I tend to do them when I need them for my uni ie. on a career start date basis, so it could be a long way off!

Are you running a uni?

Yeah. I started in 1900 and I've made it to 1908. It's not a complicated uni, just something basic to get a feel for the game. 800 or so guys, 600 or so from the db and 200 or so that I've found on the forum or at cornerwork. But I'm always looking for all the files I can get right now, as I guess everyone else is too. Unfortunately I can't be useful in making files since I know very little about boxing!

Eddie Curry (100007)

Boxrec W8(KO 3)/L4(KO 1)/D5;nc 1

According to boxrec Curry fought over a five year period at Featherweight.

His last recorded bout was against the 'darling' of London's national Sporting Club Ben Jordan. He lost the contest by disqualification, the bout was for the British version of the World Featherweight title.

He dropped points verdicts to Young Griffo and Tommy White whilst gaining two decisions against Ulsterman Billy Whistler.

As ever, any input or comment on the ratings posted in this thread would be appreciated. In most cases evidence is thin on the ground!

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Jack Downey (10568)

Boxrec W28(KO 9)/L12(KO 5)/D19;2 nc's

According to boxrec Downey fought over a 16 year period at Lightweight, though there was a 6 year gap between his penultimate and last fight.

Although Downey has a 56 fight career on boxrec information on him is rather sketchy. He appears to have somewhat of a swarming and 'dirty' style and wasn't shy when it came to fouling.

At the peak of his career he fought George Dixon to a twenty round draw and held his own on a number of occassions with Frank Erne.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Charley Holcombe (125277)

Boxrec: W17(KO 9)/L9(KO 2)/D6; 4 nc's

Holcombe fought for a nine year career mainly at Welterweight.

In 1894 he squared up to a young Joe Walcott and after surviving four rounds received $50 for his troubles.

He kept on the go but never met the likes of Walcott again.

In 1895 he fought an exhibition bout against Stanton Abbott, whilst at the end of his career he lost three times to Kid Carter.

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.

Larry McDonald (45210)

Boxrec W7(KO 2) / L1(KO 1)/ D1

Not much to go on with McDonald, any assistance would be appreciated!

His boxrec record has a nine year span at Welterweight.

He managed a disqualification victory against Charley Johnson before being knocked out by Battling Nelson.

His first recorded fight was a 10 round points verdict over Charley Holcombe (see above)

This rating is speculative and not part of the database.
