Woolf Bendoff

I've got some problems with Bendoff's rating in the game. It is based on what is available in boxrec and doesn't do his career justice.

Woolf Bendoff
Global ID 129431
sex male
birth date 1860-00-00
division heavyweight
nationality United Kingdom
residence
won 0 (KO 0) + lost 6 (KO 5) + drawn 1 = 7

1898-01-24 vs Gus Ruhlin L TKO 2
1889-11-29 vs Peter Jackson L TKO 2
Record indicates Jackson fought Bendoff and White on the same day.
1889-07-26 vs James Robertson Couper L TKO 27
~ referee: Clem.D. Webb ~
~ South African heavyweight title ~
The Star July 27, 1889

The Sportsman November 5, 1888
1884-12-17 vs Jem Smith L TKO 13

Fought under Queensberry rules / Stopped when police intervened
1882-12-01 vs John Knifton L PTS 3

Additional Personal info for Bendoff
5' 11" 175-190 lbs residence London

Bendoff learned pugilism from his uncle, prize ring professional. When diamond king Barney Barnato had a falling out with Professor James Robertson Couper he sought to give Couper a comeupence. An experienced fighter was found and brought to South Africa for the purpose of beating Couper. Bendoff was young, bigger, and more experienced than the 38 year old Couper, who had retired. Couper was lured out of retirement with the most lucrative stakes ever offered, to date, for a prize ring bout, 4,500 pounds. ($22,500 according to the Chicago Tribune 8-31-1989) The Couper-Bendoff bout was the first fight, of international notice, ever held in South Africa.
Chris Greyvenstein, in The Fighters, tells us that prior to the bout Bendoff's record was published in local papers. Bendoff had 11 bouts prior
to his fight with Knifton. Looks like he was 9-3-3 with at least 3 KO wins going into the bout with Couper.

W vs. Jem Gfiffith in 2 hrs with a purse of 190 quid.
W KO 8 vs. Jim Hickey, champion of Lancashire
W Ko 16 vs. Pat harrigan
3 wins in a single night in a tournament vs. unnamed opponents
W vs. Jim Young 6 minutes
these successes in England led Bendoff to an American tour
D vs. Jerry Murphy at Windsor Theatre in Boston
W KO 4 Mick Dyer at Windsor Theatre in Boston
W 4 Nat Langham in Texas (an eponymous Nat Langham, not the noted prize ring middlewight
D vs Johnson (billed as coloured champion of America)

Barneto wagered 1,000 pounds on Bendoff outside of the stakes.
2,300 people paind 5 quid for admission. Couper also received 3,000 pounds from the divided gatemoney. The 27 rounds were spread over 1 hour 27 minutes.
Chicago Tribune reported Bendoff's weight at 175. Bendoff-Couper was the Holmes-Cooney of its day in south Africa, and put boxing on the map in that country.

Bendoff is purported to have had a 1904 exhibition with Jem Mace

I'll be tweaking Woolf's record and post my suggested changes in the Early Years thread. His KD-KO-Rec #'s are way too high. Since Couper is only rated a 2 Woolf should probably be a 1 rather than a 0. He was popular and known and will have more gate appeal. With a few KO's under his belt his HP should be a tad higher. My

He was described as no beauty in the local papers prior to the Couper bout.

Chris
Couper's drawing power should probably be increased to about a 4 or 5.
He was the only big draw in his country.
