Joey Parsons Rating 1 England
Heavyweight 1951-57
16 wins / 9 losses / 1 draw / 4 KO

Hometown: Ilford, England

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Parsons won his first two fights against a Jack Curran(1-10-2) then lost three straight, the first a 6 rounder to Harry Painter. He then reeled out 11 straight wins including a couple over Wally Curtis, one over Dave Elmes(11-3-0,1 who had a short but somewhat interesting career), and LHW Ted Mason(20-13-1,16KO).

After that, Parsons career tailed off going 3-5-1 over the last couple years. He lost fights to Vic Phayer, Brian Anders, and Arthur Howard, with a win against George Walker and cruiserweight Dennis Fewkes(16-16-1,8KO). After loosing to Howard in February 1954, Parsons retired from the ring until he staged a 1 fight comeback in October 1957 loosing a 5th round TKO to Colin Strauch.

Irish HW Tomato Cans

I decided to take a little different track for awhile with fighter rating and look at making some record padders and create some real life tomoto can fighters starting with some Heavyweights(of course you know me and my love for the heavies), from different nationalities. I took some of the gread tomato can fighters posted on cornerwork to act as some quick templates to do this. I'll modify ratings around to what I think looks good for the particular fighter. I'm not going to play test any of these guys, the ratings speak for themselves. These guys are only going to beat up on each other and not much else.

Here's the first few......

Patrick Michael Barry
2 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 2 KO

Hometown: Dublin, Ireland

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

He fought and was KO'd in the 1st round in December 1936 at Chicago Stadium by Buddy Baer.

Joe Christle
6 wins / 2 losses / 1 draw / 2 KO

Hometown: Dublin, Ireland

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

Chris Cole
1 win / 7 losses / 0 draws / 1 KO

Hometown: Mullingar, Co Westmeath

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

His one win was a 1st round TKO over Jack Doyle in June 1943. Lost fights to Jack Smith, Al Robinson twice, Ben Valentine, Carl Nielsen a John Nilsson from Sweden and lasty in November 1947 was KO'd in 5 by Paddy Slavin in Slavin's first professional bout.

Irish HW Tomato Cans

Andy Cunningham
0 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

One loss a KO.

Paul Douglas
1 win / 4 losses / 1 draw / 0 KO

Hometown: Belfast, Ireland

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

Lost 5th round TKO to Kevin McBride in June 1997 for the vacant All-Ireland HW Title.

Jim Dowling
10 wins / 16 losses / 0 draws / 9 KO

Hometown: New York, NY

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

Maybe not a Tomato Can in the purest sense. This guy apparently had some punch with 9 KO's in his 10 wins, but he also couldn't take a punch being KO'd in 13 losses, TKO'd in 2 and the 16th loss, actually his first career loss was a 4th round disqualification.

He started out 6-1 with 6 KO's then the opponents started finding thier mark, most likely his glass chin. He lost fights to Ralph Ficucello, Abe Simon(his first career fight) and Al McCoy.

Pat Haywood
1 win / 0 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

Won a 6 round decision over Umberto Torriani.

Jimmy Healy
2 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 2 KO

Charles Patrick Henry
Not really a Tomato Can in the class of the rest of these guys.
16 wins / 17 losses / 3 draws / 14 KO

Hometown: County Mayo, Ireland

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

BoxRec lists Henry as a heavyweight and that's what I'll make him as but he appeared to fight up and down between Light Heavies and Heavyweights throughout his career.

Biggest name opponents were three fights(a loss and 2 draws) against Frank Hough(61-26-4,42) a hard puncher from Ipswich, England who also move up and down between Middleweight on up to Heavies in his career, Henry beat Vic Brooks a couple times, lost to Reg Andrews, Len Bennet, Gerry McDermott and Dolph Quijano.

Henry also fought and lost three times to a George Dawson(16-9-0,12), won one and lost one to Frank Ronan(17-8-1,11), lost to American LHWs Reuben Jones (40-19-2,8), Harold Sampson(16-9-4,10) and Frank Favaro(11-2-0,8) and German MW Dietrich Hucks(28-11-10,22).

Pat Keane
0 wins / 2 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO

Hometown: Lambeth, England

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

Two TKO losses in 1 and 2 rounds.

Dom Lydon
6 wins / 6 losses / 0 draws / 6 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

Won his first two fights in late 1937 by TKO then lost a 10 round decision to Tony Shucco in August 1938, a 10 round decision to Jim Wilde in October 1938 and a 7th round TKO to Al Robinson in July 1939.

In March 1940 he fought Ernie Simmons for the Irish Heavyweight Title. Lydon had to retire from the fight in the 10th round with an injured hand after having quite a good lead on points. AFter that Lydon fought only a couple times in 1941 winning both fights, including a 2nd round KO of Charlie Collett. He then retired from the ring until Decmeber 1944 at which over the next 6 months he won 2 fights and lost 2.

Then Marrinan didn't fight again until he lost decisions in early 1938 to Eddie Wenstob and Larry Gains.

Martin Thornton? He wasn't by any chance related to big Sean Thornton who fought in the States and killed a man, forcing him to leave and return to the land of his birth. He was a quiet sort of man, I think.

Jack Phoenix
3 wins / 11 losses / 0 draws / 2 KO

Hometown: Dublin, Ireland

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Phoenix fought infrequently from 1924 to 28 climbing into the ring only 6 times loosing all 6 bouts. He first lost a 15 round decision to Len Johnson in June 1924. Next fight was February 1925 loosing by 7th round TKO to Noel McCormick. Then October of 25 he lost by 4th round TKO to Con O'Kelly. It was then over 2 years before he fought again, loosing another 15 round decision, this time to Harry Reeve. He followed that In February 1928 being stopped in the 6th round by George CooK. A month later he took on middleweight Andy Newton who had a very impressive career record of 138-36-9,76KO. Much of that though was against guys like Jack Phoenix. Newton KO'd Phoenix in the 10th round.

That followed another layoff of over two years before coming back to the ring in July 1930 getting KO'd in 7 by Eddie Benson. Phoenix then fought 7 more times through 1931 winning 3 and loosing 4 to guys of his caliber. Did fight and got KO'd in 3 by Jimmy Tarante (also fought as James Rodgers 25-9-3,14KO).

Martin Thornton
7 wins / 5 losses / 0 draws / 6 KO

Hometown: Spiddal

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto (Altered Tomato Can from Cornerwork)

Thorton's first career bout on Feb 22nd 1942 turned out to be the last career bout for a pretty fair middleweight for from England, Jack Casey. Thornton stopped Casey in the 6th round by TKO. Thornton then did not fight again until a year later and then in 1943 and early 1944 won 3 fights first including a 5th round DQ win over a George Muir(15-9-1,10KO) then lost to Ben Valentine in June 1943 being DQ'd in the 7th round. After an 8 round points loss to Ken Shaw who was 3-0-1 in an early career out of Scotland that would end in a 23-13-4 record for him, Thornton then beat Ben Valentine in November 1943 knocking out Ben in the 3rd round.

Eight days after KOing Valentine, Thornton took on undefeated(11-0 at the time) Bruce Woodcock. Woodcock stopped Thornton in the 2nd round. After defeating Al Robinson in January 1944, Thornton then had his fight against Paddy O'Sullivan for the Irish HW Title, knocking out Paddy in the 3rd round. That was in February 1944 afterwhich Thornton fought only 2 more times according to the BoxRec records, loosing again to Bruce Woodcock in August 1945 and then loosing to Ray Wilding in April 1949 after a 4 year layoff.

Last Irish Heavyweight

Ran across this guy and even discovered I had a photo that someone obviously posted. It surprised me he'd not been rated before or at least he was not in my DB if someone has.

Toner ends it for the heavies from Ireland. Next up I'm going to look at Scotland heavies. There's that Ken Shaw I saw I want to do and there was expressed on another thread some interest in guys from Scotland.

Tom Toner Rating 3
HW 1928-32
17 wins / 6 losses / 1 draw / 9 KO

Hometown: Philadlephia & Belfast
Birthplace: Ireland
Trainer: Ray Pelkey

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

An 8-0-0 start to his career included a 6 round decision over Al Friedman. Toner then went through a 2-4-1 spell from 1929 to mid 1930 including losses to Tony Talarico, Joe Banovic and in May 1930 he was KO'd in the 7th round by Max Baer. Toner followed that defeat three weeks later with a 4th round KO of Tillie Taverria. After 5 more wins after that including 2 over middlewieght Joe Racehorse Roberts(64-27-26,11KO), Toner then lost a 4 round decision to Ted Jernigan(3-6-1) and finished 1930 with a 3rd round TKO over MW Les Saunders(12-15-2,4KO).
Toner then was absent from the ring until making a 1 fight comeback in May 1932 when he was DQ'd in the 5th round in a fight against Jack Petersen.

Found some more Irish HW

When I did a "match" search in BoxRec and picked British for the nationality to search, by then scrolling down and looking at Hometown listings I found a few morth heavies listed as Ireland or Northern Ireland for hometown.

BTW...Paul Douglas and Pat Marrinan whom I posted just recently, I had thier Nationality set as Ireland, but being thier hometown is Belfast, you might want to set them at Northern Ireland, that is of course if your splitting the UK fighters up by Enland, Wales, Ireland etc...

Herman Weiner

"The Baltimore Banger." A hard-hitting Jewish heavyweight of the thirties, Herman Weiner made a name for himself when he TKO'd Battling Levinsky in the first round in a January 1929 bout, flooring the ex-champ three times in the first 37 seconds. "You can tell the world I'm through," Levinsky told the press after the fight.

Weiner himself finished with 13 knockouts in 16 wins, although he was also stopped eight times. The attached fighter does well against tomato cans, occasionally surprising a better fighter.

No photo of him, unfortunately.

Bob Tow

Another mediocre heavy of the thirties.

Bob Tow was a native of Birmingham, Ala., who compiled a record of 18-15-1 (6) between 1930 and 1940. He was Corn Griffin's first professional opponent (their fight ended in a no contest). His biggest win was over Tony Galento in July 1934, although Tow lost a rematch four months later. He also lost to Jersey Joe Walcott, Natie Brown, Buddy Knox, and Jorge Brescia among others.

Better than a tomato can.

Thanks, Chris! (But where is Herman Weiner's pic?) Sometimes I think that you and Jofre should just post a list of the photos-without-fighters that you've got lying around.

David:

I just did some checking and neither of these photos are ones that I dredged up myself.

Tow was posted by Cap back in June and Weiner was posted by Tosti two months ago. The search function seems to be working well these days (I think the board got a software upgrade after the crash).

Thanks again for the ratings!

Christopher

CORDELL "The Emperor" JONES - HW (1949-1960) Overall Rating = 1

Hometown - Reno, Nevada

9(6)-32-5

Jones ranged from middleweight to heavyweight and fought mostly young or local boxers in the Bay area, Nevada and the Northwest. He had a little power as 6 of his 9 wins came via KO (and usualy early). One win over a fighter named Bull Brown came via DQ; apparently Bull was fond of kicking. He was stopped by JT Ross, Neal Rivers (In a Nevada State MW bout) and 17 others.
