Good Job! How did you get the city names on the fighter profile?

Joe Welling

Welling was a Chicago Jewish lightweight and welterweight who lost three title shots--twice to Jack Britton for the welterweight crown and then finally to Benny Leonard for the lightweight championship.

Thanks for the welcome back, mh! Except for Welling, though, these are old ratings jobs. Still, it's good to get back into the swing.

As for the city names in place of nationalities. First, go to Cornerwork here and download the New Flags. Install them in Images --> Flags.

Then on a fighter's screen, click on the triangle next to the Nationality drop-down box. Under the list of available nationalities, click on New. Then type in the city. I've used old style abbreviations in the New Flags archive: e.g., "Chicago, Ill."

And there you have it!

Thank you for the rating David! The photo of Welling was cropped from the picture below that I found on the National Library of Australia's website. It was taken in 1914 on the steps of Sydney stadium and contains a number of US, Aussie, New Zealand and Welsh boxers.

Sitters named from left to right in each row. Front row: Al Lippe, Tommy Burns, Fritz Holland, Tommy Lee. Second row: Larnie Lichtenstein, Jeff Smith, Jimmy Clabby, Joe Welling. Third row: Joe Brookes, Johnny Schiff, Joe Shugrue. Back row: Dave Smith, Frank Ellis, Bob Moore.

I'll be back in action tomorrow rating some of these guys. I've been without power for four days due to some bad weather here in SE Kansas. Looks like I'll have to spend about two days downloading what I've missed in the last 4 days.

Young Beau Jack

Real name: Elwood Thornton
Hometown: Boston, Mass.
Record: 21-9-0 (6)

Began his career as a middleweight, but after being knocked out in the first by George Benton in February 1959, he moved up to light heavy. Thornton (a.k.a. Young Beau Jack) then lost five of his last ten fights.

Freddy Boylstein

A difficult fighter to rate. A Pittsburgh welterweight, Boylstein was undefeated in six career bouts between 1925 and 1927.

I tried to compensate for his lack of experience by giving him a proficiency rating of 8, and setting his control factors pretty low, but he still came out with an overall rating of 6.

Testing him against 600 welterweights in my Master DB, he ended up with a 175-389-34 (79) record. Against my Tomato Can DB, Boylstein fared much better, finishing 349-233-17 (275).
