KID BLACK LW

Hometown - New York, New York, USA

17(6)-27-6

Black had a few impressive decision wins over Fighting Zunner, a young Benny Leonard and Young Wagner; the balance of his victories came at the expense of rather unimpressive competition. He suffered decision losses to Panama Joe Gans and KO Chaney. Black was knocked out by Rocky Kansas and battled to a draw with Kid Locke. He did not fight for any titles during his 19 year career.

DAVID BRAXTON JMM

Hometown - Detroit, Michigan, USA

35(24)-3-0

Braxton was the NABF Jr. Middleweight Title holder and was TKO'd by Mike McCallum in a bid for the WBA title for the only stoppage loss of his career. He defeated Kenny Snow, Reggie Miller, James Green, Gonzalo Montes and Bruce "The Mouse" Strauss during his 8 years in the ring.

HAROLD BLACKSHEAR HW

Hometown - San Francisco, California, USA

32(27)-22-1; 1 NC

Blackshear was a powerful journeyman that fought on the West Coast. He was decisioned twice by Tiger Jack Fox, once by Buddy Knox and was KO'd by Buddy Baer. Harold held wins over Newsboy Millich, Freddie Fiducia and most impressively, a sixth round knockout over Al Delaney in Blackshear's third pro bout. Delaney was 40-11-5 at the time of their meeting. Despite a better than average record, Blackshear was never given a shot at any of the Western State titles.

SAILOR BURKE (Charles Prasser) MW

Hometown - New York, New York, USA

24(12)-15-2; 2 NC

Burke fought Billy Papke for the World Middleweight Title, although Burke reportedly out-slugged Papke, the title remained with Papke (probably a pre-arrangement whereby the title would only change hands on a knockout). Burke fought two 6 round decision losses against heavyweights Jess Willard and Jack Johnson, had a pair of NC bouts with Tom McMahon, lost twice to welterweight Willie Lewis and decisioned heavyweight whipping boy Joe Grim.

Dencio twice fought for the Hawaiian Middleweight Title, winning it on a DQ by Johnny Dias the second time around. Thank you, I also appreciate all the photographs you folks are digging up.

MIKE "The Ithaca Giant" CONLEY HW

Hometown - Ithaca, New York, USA

2(1)-3-0; 1 NC

Conley stood six feet tall and was an imposing figure in the ring (for his day). He had an odd career, fighting only 6 bouts over eight years in far flung venues. He took bouts in New York, San Francisco, Wisconsin and New Orleans. It is likely that these locals simply were the places his travels looking for work took him and boxing was just a way to make a few bucks from time-to-time. He did knock John P Clow out however Mike also dropped early round KOs to Frank Herold and Billy Woods. Conley likely lacked boxing skills but found that his size could be an occasional ticket to a payday in the ring.

BARTLEY CONNOLLY WW

Born - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
Hometown - Portland, Maine, USA

4(1)-4-6

Connolly had an unimpressive 14 bout career until you examine his opponents. He began his pro career in 1904 battling to two ten round draws with the more experienced Blink McCloskey in Portland, Maine. Connolly then defeated Patsy Sweeney (49-16-20) via eighth round TKO and drew with Terry Martin. His first loss came against the then undefeated Billy Papke who TKO'd him in round four. Then came a truly remarkable year for Bartley.

In 1908, Connolly decisioned Fred Bradley who was 9-6-3 at the time. He then impressively won against the 23-5-2 Charley Hitte. In September, the legendary Joe Walcott brought his 95-27-21 record to Portland Maine and was decisioned in six rounds by Connolly! Barley finished 1908 with a six round draw against George Gunther (5-8-3 at the time)

With year like that, one would think that Connolly was destined for greatness. For reasons unknown to me, Connolly only fought on five more occasions amassing a 0-3-2 record with bouts in England, Ireland and back in the USA. Two of the losses came against Terry Martin and Eddie McGoorty who were 23-17-8 and 28-1-8 respectively at the time of their meetings.

Connolly's was an odd career, he fought some of the best competition available at his weight and performed well, yet his career never really got off the ground.

JACK FOGARTY MW

Hometown - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

10(9)-1-1

Fogarty strung together eight knockout victories and perhaps as many as eleven other unrecorded victories before facing Jack Non Pareil Dempsey of Ireland for the American version of the World Middleweight Title in 1886. The two battled twenty-six rounds before Fogarty succumbed to a KO in the 27th. Jack fought two more bouts in 1886 with Joe Ellingsworth comming away with a win and a draw. After an absence of twelve years, Fogarty stepped back into the ring one final time in 1898 to KO the inexperienced Evan Davis in Wheeling, West Virginia.

TOMMY DIXON FW

Hometown - Kansas City, Missouri, USA

3(0)-10-6; 4 NC

Dixon's only wins came against three inexperienced boxers, he did however fight rather well against a number of big names in the early twentieth century. He lost on points to Johnny Dundee, Yankee Schwartz and Charley White. Dixon drew with Monte Attell and Frankie Conley and had two NC bouts with Tommy Sullivan. He fought Johnny Kilbane for the World Featherweight title twice, with both bouts ending as no contest matches. He was also stopped by Harry Pierce and Phinney Boyle late in his pro career.

ROBERT "Bobby" DOBBS LW

Birthplace - Cartersville, Georgia, USA

109(67)-36-32; 9 NC (Dobbs claimed to have fought over 1,000 bouts)

Bobby Dobbs began as a wrestler and boxer with a traveling health and fitness show while he was in his teens. He was known to be a popular draw on the boxing circuit and was described as quick, agile and clever. At 26, He fought for his first official title, the Massachusetts Middleweight Crown. Dick O'Brien won on a TKO in the 18th round of a bout that lasted one hour and nineteen minutes.

The two years following the Massachusetts title fight saw Bobby defeat Charley Johnson and a young Philadelphia Jack O'Brien as well as battle to a NC with Joe Walcott and a draw in a second bout with O'Brien. In 1897, the crowning moment of Dobbs career came as he defeated Joe Gans to claim the World Colored Lightweight Title. Although he never again fought for a major title, Dobbs had an impressive career, drawing with Charley Johnson and fighting well in losing battles with Gans, Walcott, Rube Ferns and Matty Matthews. In 1901, Dobbs and Young Peter Jackson staged a three bout series that saw Dobbs win the first and draw in the second two. The third bout between the two was held in Hot Springs, AR and was refereed by Bat Masterson of OK Coral fame.

While in his forties, Dobbs went on a brief tour of Europe facing mostly local talent but did battle in two 20 round losses to well-known European lightweights Waldemar Holberg and Dick Nelson. After retiring, Dobbs kept in the game by training other fighters.

I hate to admit this, but I seem to have missplaced my photo of Maurizio Stecca. I was sure that I set right on the side table next to my keys....

Does anyone have a spare that they could lend me?
