Tony Martin - MW
1936-1946
Rating 7
Milwaukee, WI

Antonio Cianciola(real name)
Record: 49-9-7 (24 KOs)

Known to the boxing world as "Tony Martin" because his given name, Antonio Cianciola was difficult for ring announcers to pronounce.

He won the Wisconsin Golden Gloves, turned professional in 1936 and knocked out many fighters with what sportswriters of the time described as a flashing right hook. In three years, he lost only one of 33 bouts. In 1939, he moved to Newark, N.J., to train with the legendary Ray Arcel. It was Arcel who gave him the new ring name. A year later, the newly named Martin came home to fight Toots Bernstein for the Wisconsin middleweight title. It turned into a rocking three-fight series, with Bernstein winning the first fight by decision, and Martin winning twice by knockout.

Martin was never given the opportunity to fight for the world title. He fought middleweight champ Tony Zale in a non-title fight on New Year's Day 1941 at the Auditorium. Martin was ahead on points when, according to news reports, Zale butted him and closed his left eye, stopping the fight. Martin never got a rematch with Zale. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, Martin fought a few more times, and then quit the ring.

Next two ...

... from the 1940s are Paul "Tennessee" Lee and Al Reid. The latter was posted at CornerWork in an earlier batch, but Boxrec has recently updated his record and a pic has been found, so I updated the file.

Also from ...

... the 1940s are Luigi Valentini and Johnny Marino. Sorry, no pic on Marino, and the Valentini is Romultiltus' pic, I think.

Last two for now ...

... are two of my favorites from the 1980s whom I thought I had rated and posted quite a while back, but couldn't find in my database (apologies if someone else posted them and I missed them) -- Pat Clinton and Shawn O'Sullivan.

Does anyone have a picture or rating of Dick Wagner, LHW 1945-53, who just passed away. He had wins over Artie Levine, Dan Bucceroni, Joey DeJohn and Billy Fox. Wagner also gave Floyd Patterson life and death in their 1st bout!

Thanks,

Austin

Austin, here's a pic that I have when he was a middleweight. I don't have a file though.

Sal,

Thanks for the photo of Dick Wagner. If no one has a rating, I might be forced to make one up on my own. Always a dangerous undertaking!

Joe McAuliffe - HW
1886-1897
Rating 5
San Francisco, CA

Joe McAuliffe
(the "Mission Boy") (the 'Frisco Giant)
BORN November 2 1864; San Francisco, California.
HEIGHT 6-3
WEIGHT 200-225 lbs
MANAGER Barney Farley

McAuliffe was a big and powerful man who threw sledge-hammer blows; He was not a good boxer but had size and strength on his side. Joe worked at a tannery near San Francisco and often went to the Athletic Club at the "Mission" in 'Frisco; After his boxing career ended, he went back to working at a tannery.
During his career, McAuliffe defeated such men as Dick Matthews, Mike Brennan, Paddy Ryan, Frank Glover, Mike Conley, Tom Lees, Pat Killen, and Patsy Cardiff. Perhaps, the best fight of his career came in 1888 in a losing effort against the great Peter Jackson over 24 rounds.
