BOBBY COURCHESNE LW

Hometown - Holyoke, MA, USA

51(22)-9-2

Courchesne packed 62 bouts into his short five year career, collecting the New England Lightweight title along the way. He had victories over Johnny Busso and Russell Tague. In his final bout (with Bobby Bell) he was ahead on two cards when he suffered a convulsion between rounds that the doctor felt was caused by the heat. I do not know if his health was the reason for Courchesne's retirement from the ring, but he did not fight again.

Another from the list, Albert "Buck" Crouse - MW. I do not know the source.

Conn,

Bobby Courchesne was another fighter I followed much like Andre Tessier.
To my amazement, I marked him lower than you. He had some nice wins. His attack was his defense. You were correct regarding his retirement, he had health problems. He died just last year.

Do you have any knowledge of Nick Stato, a featherweight from Springfield, who did most of his boxing in the 40's out of Hartford. I knew him when I was a little boy and he had retired. At that time my knowledge was limited regarding boxing.

Thanks,

Austin

Unfortunately, none. I began following bxing with my Grandfather around 74/75. It was shortly thereafter that "Grampy" started taking me now and then to watch Marlon Starling run and work out at F. Mac Buckley's farm in Marlborough (Grandfather's hometown).

I saw my first amature fights at the San Juan Center (although it had a different name then - can't recall what) around 75/76, so Stato is a bit before me. He may have known Lawrence Clay-Bey's dad though; he was a MW or LHW amature in Hartford back then.

EDIT:

By the way Austin, the San Juan Center is actually putting on an amature card open to the public this February! They haven't firmed up a date yet, but if you have any interest I can post their phone number tomorrow morning (its in my desk at work) because they do not have a web site, nor do they advertise. Calling or dropping in as I did a few weeks back are the only ways to find out when fights are scheduled.

GARY YOUNG - WW

Hometown: Edinburgh, Scotland

Active WW, current record 11-0-0 (6). Best guess at the rating, no one to compare him with. He has not fought anyone rated in the game.

Thanks SAL - here's a little write-up from a hometown paper on Gary, I had been hanging onto it in case I rated him.

DAN MUSICO SMW

Hometown - Paterson, New Jersey, USA

8(8)-2-0; 1 NC (Musico claims to have a 22-2 record; he may be including amature or exhibition bouts in that total)

Musico knocked out 8 stiffs and was stopped by 2 fighters in their pro debuts. His only bout against a boxer with more than one win ended in a no contest.

STEVE CUNNINGHAM CW

Hometown - Philadelphia, PA, USA

16(9)-0-0

Cunningham is on the cusp of becomming a top cruiserweight contender. The WBC and WBA have ranked the former National Gold Gloves Champ (178 lbs) in their top 15. In November of 2004, he was called on to be a fill-in for a no show against Wyane Braithwaite. When Braithwaite's people learned who the fill-in was, they backed out for "undisclosed" reasons. That may be an indication of what the top cruisers think of Mr. Cunningham.

Julio Mederos HW 1951-58 (20-19-3, 13KO)

Wins against Roland LaStarza, Bob Satterfield.
Losses against Satterfield (twice), John Holman, Harold Johnson, Bob Baker, Harold Carter, Wayne Bethea, Eddie Machen (twice), Tommy Jackson, Alex Miteff, George Chuvalo and Sonny Liston.
One no contest against Johnson, apparently Johnson took a dive but the KO in 2 was changed to a no contest.

High number of rated fighters on Mederos' resume made him a fairly easy rating assignment.
