Cube,

I thank Mederos should have a higher rating. He was a solid pro who put forth a good effort in losing. He was very strong and had a good defense. He was very slow even by HW standards. He would expose any fighter who had a winning record built up against dead bodies.

Maderos is an important part of 1950's boxing history and lore. He was Harold Johnson's opponent in the 1955 "orange" incident, a bout that nearly resulted in the termination of Johnson's career. Harold claimed to have been drugged or suffering from the effects of a spiked orange. This placed a huge cloud over his career. He was investigated by the Pennsylvania boxing commision and possibly suspended, which explains the near to a year gap in his ring activity.

The problem with rating him higher is that he lost 2 of 3 to Satterfield. Satterfield's ratings are really low, and his other notable win came against a shot Roland LaStarza.

TUFFY DIAL LHW

Hometown - Phoenix, Arizona, USA

2(0)-14-4

Dial's career was not as utterly unimpressive as his record might lead you to believe. He only won 2 fights, but given the quality of his opponents it is interesting to note that he was only stopped on four occasions. He suffered losses to Lee Savold, Johnny Romero, Tiger Jack Fox, Maxie Rosenbloom (twice) and John Henry Lewis. He also managed to battle to a draw with Bearcat Wright.

PAT COWDELL FW

Hometown - Warley, England

36(18)-6-0

Cowdell put together an impressive featherweight resume. He won the British Featherweight Title in 1979 on a 15 round decision over Dave Needham, he went on to defend the title twice and later won the Brittish Junior Lightweight title. He also won the European Junior Lightweight title, defending it twice as well. Pat had two shots at the WBC belt. The first came in 1981 that was a 15 round war with the split decision awarded to Salvador Sanchez at the Astrodome in Houston Texas. The second chance came four years later against the hard hitting Azumah Nelson who scored a first round knockout. Cowdell also holds wins over Carlos Hernandez, Roberto Castanon, Jean-Marc Renard, Kevin Pritchard, Salvatore Melluzzo and Jimmy Flint.

ARTHUR DOUGLAS LW

Hometown - Cape Town, South Africa

68(36)-27-14; 11 NC

Douglas fought in his native South Africa through 1908 winning and defending the South African Featherweight Title six times before moving his base of operation to Australia where he fought for the bulk of his career. Douglas won the Australian Lightweight Title, defending three times before dropping a 20 round decision to Hughie Mehegan. Although he fought for the Aussie Belt several more times, he was unable to regain it. In 1912, he won the lesser Queensland Lightweight belt which he defended once. During his stint in Australia, Douglas defeated Hock Keys, George Johns, Frank Thorn and Monty Andrews. He lost to Bob Whitelaw, Thorn, Ray Bronson, Johnny Summers and Hughie Mehegan. His record in Australia was a respectable 41-12-9; 10NC. In 1920, Douglas went back to South Africa and posted a 2-2-1 record against unimpressive competition prior to his retirement from the ring.
