Owen,

Right now I am sticking with the fifties, because that's where my boxing universe is stuck. And there are a lot of European fighters from that era who deserve to be rated.

Fighters like. . . .

Yes, thnk you very much. I was looking to add some more Europeans to my universe so this is perfect. Here is one I just added myself.

Renato Tontino - Italian who lost in bid for European LHW title twice in early 50's.

Renato Tontini

Note that Tontini lost to Hairabedian (rated above) for the vacant EBU light heavy title in 1953.

Earlier he lost an EBU light heavy title bout to Albert Levy. Oops, sorry, Levy must not have wanted anyone to know that he was a Jew. He fought under the name Yvel. (That'll fool 'em!)

Mark Elwood rated Yvel some time ago.

Saw that. thanks.

Here are a couple of more Europeans from this era

HW Gabriel Bigotte of France and Belguim's Robert Eugene. Both were losers in the second round or quarterfinals of a European Heavyweight tournament in 1948. In the finals Aaron Wilson, who despite being born in Nashville, won the event by defeating Stephane Olek on points. With the addition of Bigotte and Eugene all 8 quarterfinalists are now rated.

Johnny Van Rensburg

Okay, he wasn't European. He was South African. Still, Van Rensburg held two Commonwealth titles--lightweight, 1955-1956, and welterweight, 1958. He gave Willie Toweel his first career loss, and beat George Barnes twice.

Pat Ford

Another British Commonwealth champion who wasn't a European and probably doesn't belong on this thread. An Aussie from New South Wales, Ford was Commonwealth lightweight champ from 1953 to 1954.

Charlie Hill

A Scottish feather. Won British featherweight title from Billy (Spider) Kelly in February 1956, despite being floored twice. According to a note at Boxrec, "A riot ensues after the decision is announced. . . ." Hill fought Percy Lewis for the vacant Commonwealth featherweight championship in December 1957, but was TKO'd in the tenth. He lost his British title 16 months later to Bobby Neill on a TKO--Hill's last fight.

Missing EBU and Commonwealth contenders

I am slowly putting together a pack of EBU and British Commonwealth champions and contenders from 1945 to 1970. (Dean J. Day has a similar pack for Commonwealth champs and contenders through 1945. It is available at Cornerwork.)

About some of these fighters there won't be much information, and so their ratings will be speculative. Such as. . . .
