The purpose of 2 & 3pt.

I dont know if this is in the correct area of the forum. But how would you go about explaining the difference between the 2pt and 3pt punches? Would it take away from the gameplay to just allow 2pt punches only? I thought I was told or read they were for display purpose only during the fight that they held no extra value in scoring points for the punch type?

The 'type' of punch is window dressing. 2 and 3 point punches relate to how hard of a punch lands.

2 and 3 pt punches

This is something that is explained perhaps in the documentation but I know it was part of the original boardgame. The 3 pt punches reflect stronger, crisper blows more likely to impress the judges than just the regular two point punches -- they do not require a higher level of "power" rating for the boxer to score them. The next level up is 4 and 5 point punches (not shown in the individual fighter ratings) which come into effect when a boxer's power rating is called upon. In the TBCB commentary, you will see for a 4-point punch something like "What a strong shot -- wow, Tommy Bruno was staggered by that blow!" Then, for the next level, a 5-point punch, a fighter's killer instinct is triggered, and the "Cover Up" option appears for the hurt fighter, assuming that guy has cover up options available (you only get so many during each fight-- good defensive boxers get more.) Finally, if a fighter is knocked down but not out, the points awarded range from 6 to 10 depending on how long he was down.

Keeping track of these points not only determines the scoring for the round, but it can have an effect on whether or not the ref will stop the bout and you will have a TKO. Since the 3-point blows each count 50% more than just regular 2-point punches, it's important to count them as such as all these numbers add up.

Hope this helps. If anything is unclear, just ask a follow-up question.

One Other Thing ...

The total number of points scored by a boxer in any one round has an impact of how quickly his opponent will tire out, so landing more 3 point blows will have a bigger effect than just landing 2-point blows. (Boxers with nothing in the 3 point column can be generally thought of as more light hitters, although some might have knockout capability as indicated by a high "HP" or hitting power rating.)
