Help needed - Game crashing

Can anyone help please?? I just got the game thru download. It worked fine initially when I was using the preset database

Then I decided to use Chris' thread to create my own boxing universe. As soon as I start deleting fighters, the next time I load the game it crashes with the following message:

Fatal error. Error reading .dat-file. Program terminated.

I have tried re-installing the game, I have been into the config.ini file to revert to a different database but this happens every single time I start to delete fighters.

I am using Windows Vista operating system.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated as this problem is driving me mad!!!!

Are you certain that you downloaded the Vista compatible version?

TB 2.0.28 beta available - It's MS Vista compatible!

It was released just recently, I do not know if the main download version was ever updated for this.

Thanks for your quick reply, Chris. I think that the version I downloaded is the Vista one but I can't say for sure. I'm at work at the minute so I will check this tonight and let you know how I get on.

Just downloaded the Vista version - and I thought for a moment that it had worked. It was ok when I deleted all the heavyweights, came out of the game then went back in. BUT when I deleted all but one boxer and tried to go back into the game the same error message as before came up!!!!!
Any ideas - anybody - please

That did not happen with the pre-Vista version so you may have unfortunately found a new bug.

The programmer is on vacation for another week or so, until then, try this:

Create a new throw away group called 'junk' or some such thing. Mass change all fighters into that group. (option is in the menu at the right of the screen. Then build up the database that you want under whatever group heading you want. After getting the fighters that you want in, mass-select everyone in the 'junk' group and delete them.

I'd test this first, load in a few dozen files, then mass delete the junk just to see if it works before you spend a lot of time with it.

Sorry about all that!

I've just given that a try. I put all the active fighters into a 'junk' group, leaving the retired ones in a separate group. When I delete the junk group, then go out of the game and come back in, it crashes with the same error message as before

If I can't get any further until Andreas gets back, would I be able to set up a universe keeping the current boxers in the game but putting them out of the way somewhere in a separate group that would not otherwise affect the universe that I want???

That would work just fine. I really am sorry about the trouble. The Vista version was released as a free upgrade recently and was not put through much in the way of beta testing. Now that the next version is in development, this issue could get addressed in the beta testing going on for that given that is is also Vista compatible.

What a lousy way to be introduced to such a great sim - Welcome and I hope that you will not be dissuaded from continuing.

Thanks for trying to help anyway, Chris. I'll trying doing it that way then see if Andreas has any ideas when he returns. And I daresay I'll be asking you other questions as I was using your thread for setting up a universe and I'm sure I'll get stuck somewhere along the line

AAAAAGHHHH. Just put all the fighters into a group which I named 'unused' and when I went back in, guess whhat?? The same error message. So it isn't when I delete fighters, it seems to be when I make adjustments to them

Nuts.

I am going to send this to Andreas in an email. Hopefully, he can get right to you when he gets back.

You wouldn't happen to have a non-Vista PC would you?

No I don't. I've had this computer installed with Vista for about 3 months and was thinking I'd managed to get away without any problems on any application...... I spoke too soon.

Can you mention to Andreas that I'm on holiday myself from 2nd to 16th August so if he does ask me for any further details and I don't reply immediately, I'm not being ignorant and I do still need help

Thanks again, Chris

Sorry to add further but the file seems to corrupt whenever I alter anything. Just auto-scheduled a number of bouts and when I go back into the game there is only one fighter record present. The bouts are still registered in History but with a string of letters and symbols rather than names. Think I'll just have to leave the game until Andreas comes back and see if he can suggest anything

Man, this is not a good start at all. I sent Andreas a link to this and am truly sorry that this is beyond my technological grasp.

All I can say at this point is install / re-install / try again.

I wish that I knew more.

Sorry for the problems. I'll check it out ASAP. Which Vista are you using? 32bit or 64bit? Does it also happen when you run the game as Admin?

mine is doing something simlar except mine started when i created another database now when i shut down and start up it states that fighters dont have any rating files it starts at the A's fighter has no rating file will create a blank record. one time i started clicking went throughthe whole list.then it let you go to the fighter file but only about 90 HW out of 500 had any rating the rest had all 0 so i deleted all the 0 then at worked fine had some fights used the auto sch. that worked good had about 500 fights turn it off then back on same thing the only way i could get out was hit alt+ctrl+del.than i went to my old computer sent my self one whold database file by email down load from email changed the name to the same as my new computer database deleted the files then loaded the new files thin started up TBCB2 it did fine had fights anyway i wanted to single fights, card fights and sch fights quit the game then restarted TBCB2 back to sq one no rating records i uninstalled the game started all over again same thing so then i deleted ever thing that had anything to do with TBCB.download the game again from the site reinstalled it started it up same thing when i looked in the program files under DATA the only date files listed there was default and myDB but when i started the game again and went thur all the clicking no ratings file and create a blank file thing i looked in the game database and guess what there was myDB AND webdateDB the one that i created when i loaded the game the first time where it came from i don.t know but it don't show up in the program file so you can.t get rid of it so i just give up on the new computer and play it on the old one.Mine new one has vista on it.Bill

All should work fine when you run the game as admin (right click on the icon and click on "Run as admin...")

Sorry, that's because TB2 saves all files in the program directory. Vista doesn't like that. This will be fixed in TB3.

Andreas,

Austin wanted me to thank you. I walked him through the procedure last night and had him change the compatabilty mode from "VITSA" to "XP" and the game finally ran. To say the least.... he is one happy camper!!
