Exclamation Reading .dat-file Fatal Error

Dear Andreas,

HELP!

I may have done a bad thing:

As you may be aware, the commentaries associated with the bout logs probably were written by a German who speaks English as a second language and not by a native speaker. The English is understandable but still full of errors I see right away.

So, I opened the program and tried to correct some of this, using wordpad and making only grammatical and syntactical changes to the commentaries.

Now, when I try to load a saved game, when "Loading commentaries..." appears at the very bottom, the program aborts, serving up an error message:

"Fatal Error! Error reading .dat-file! Program terminated."

Click the "OK" button, and the error message repeats; click on "Quit," and the message goes away, but the game program freezes itself and the entire computer.

I did take the precaution of buying a restoration disk with my license, so I suppose I could just rip everything out and start over; however, this game is being used in a fantasy sports league, and there are massive amounts of special entries made to the currently installed games.

My System Restore will not make the needed changes (I already have tried). Any ideas re how to fix this?

Arbie

Question Addendum

The problem definitely is in the commentaries data base (I switched the game over to German, and now it runs fine, aber nun kann ich nicht die Spiele verstehen!).

Re the FAQ suggestion to restore the data base by directing the config.ini file, I opened the program folder but found no such file. All I have are a folder labeled Data, a folder labeled Uninstall, and a bunch of geary things the computer won't open.

Are you looking in the right place? The meat of the program is in C:\My Documents\Out of the Park Developments\

What you are describing sounds like the shell that gets created in the Programs folder.

Cool Fixed!

The fix is in! (No, we're not cheating.)

I was looking in the other location, but it was not necessary to go further. I've an Aussie friend who also has a game; he sent me a copy of the English commentary file, and I just substituted it, sending the altered one to La La Land.

So, the problem is solved; but, for anyone else:

DON'T DO THIS!

The commentaries apparently cannot be altered that easily, even to make them better.
