Unhappy The dreaded "installed but cannot proceed" scenario!

Assembled Cogniscenti:

I decided to take the plunge and get back into the Trunzo world of boxing after enjoying each iteration of the empire since the board game days, and even surviving the 'programmer from hell' era that nearly finished the game (and, I believe, the designer).

OK!

With a dreadfully slow dial-up, I downloaded the program, and ran the installation. Had to change the resolution of my screen, but that's alright.

Double click on the icon, the intro panel comes up. Click on 'purchase', the gray screen providing choice of payment options comes up. So far so good.

I CAN GET NO FARTHER, however! No matter what I choose, the computer locks up. Mouse arrow is movable across the screen, but that's it. The TBCB icon is highlighted, but nothing is happening. Alt Ctrl Del helps not a whit, you have to reboot and get the delay while the system is checked for shutting down Windows incorrectly. I never get any farther than this.

I checked my DirectX software, find that it's like version 6.1 from 1999, and figure from the board postings AH HAH! That's got to be it.

Another dreadfully slow download later, I've got version 9.0b or something loaded and ready. I read several places that TBCB seems, for some unfathomable reason, to need DirectX to be initialized by some other program first, but I've got nothing else loaded (I'm 44 for God's sake!) graphically intense game wise. I open up a version of "Everest", a David Brashears moutain climbing sim hoping that might do the trick.

Nope. Try to fire up TBCB from the icon (I tried both the 'regular' and the 'graphics lite') and get a wonderful view of my desk top with nothing happening and no ability to get anything happening short of a reboot.

I've got DirectX latest, and still am unable to get to the point where I can buy the game, play the trial version, or ANYTHING ELSE beyond the intro screen.

Man, do I want to BUY THIS GAME and play it! But I can't. I'm running Windows 98 on a decent Dell and somehow I'm stuck without being able to play the only boxing sim worth a damn.

Couple of things that come to mind, although I'm WAY grasping at this point:

Is there a way to 'initialize' DirectX for TBCB without booting up another game first?

I think the game manual is a pdf file. I don't (think I) have Adobe Reader on my machine and I think I must have at one point told my machine to try and open pdf's with Word, which was admittedly stupid. When I look in the OOTP Dev folder on my c drive the manual as a result shows up as a Word file. I'll load Adobe Reader tonight (is it necessary to tell my computer that it should open pdf's with Reader instead of Word or will that happen automatically?). That couldn't really be the source of the trouble, could it?

Would it make any difference to buy the damn thing on CD?

I 've got two simming passions in my life. One is Action PC Football which has never presented much of a problem. I can jump back into football in a moment's notice.

The other is boxing. The universes (The Global Prizefighting Union was being run successfully on the '2001' program) that I have set up over the years have been BETTER than the real thing and I have had a blast. Like I've said, I've been with Jim and Tom forever and would LOVE to fully enjoy the latest and greatest iteration of the most accurate sim engine for boxing I've ever seen, with all of the 2004 bells and whistles from Andreas and company, but I am stymied.

CAN ANY OF YOU FAITHFUL FANATICS HELP THIS LOST SOUL?

Thank You!

I got this too, so I can't be bothered to buy the game. Even when the game does come up you get errors all the time, such as after a fight it will come up with an error message saying the game has to be closed immediately. It seems completely random as to when the game even starts up, couldn't possibly buy a game for this price without a guarantee that it would work.
