OOTP 15's 4th Update is Now Available!

We've released the 4th update to OOTP 15 (version number 15.4.19), which current customers can find in this post on our forum. It includes some new features and improves many other areas of the game, including 3D ball flight. Here's what's new:

  • Improved 3D ball flight engine, using realistic physics-based calculations
  • Improved 3D ballpark importer / editor
  • Improved memory management resulting in increased stability and speed, especially with large games
  • Free agent compensation / arbitration is now more realistic. OOTP correctly assigns FA comp status to all free agent-eligible players who stayed on the team the entire year, and compensation draft picks are only given when the user/AI offered arbitration to this player.
  • Draft picks with signability of "impossible" no longer state their demand. You have just one shot to convince the player with a great offer.
  • Added the option to hide player nicknames (in the player personality section of the game setup)
  • Improved the league events editor. When in commish mode, users can edit the dates of existing events and also create events using the internal event types. That way experienced users may fix problems with events caused by league scheduling errors.
  • Improved in-game AI for several situations
  • Improved in-game play-by-play commentary
  • Moved the "Force Start / Position" section in the player strategy screen from the depth chart strategy to the pitching strategy for pitchers and renamed it "Force Role."
  • Re-ordered the items in the team menu to match the order of tabs on the team screen
  • Fixed issues with touchpads on Macs
  • Fixed several bugs and rare crashes

The Business of Baseball With OOTP

Justin Lander, a teacher at Great Neck South Middle School in New York state, used this past school year to run what he called "The Business of Baseball," an after-school club in which students ran their own teams in OOTP. They used the 2006 season and opened the proceedings with a fantasy draft before getting down to the business of being General Managers.

Lander says one of the most memorable moments came in Game 7 of the World Series between San Diego and Toronto, with the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth. "Jeremy Burnitz hit a walk-off home run for San Diego and all the kids went nuts," he remembers.

You can read more about the club in the latest article on our site. And if you're a teacher who would like to use OOTP for a school club, we can set you up with free copies of OOTP 14. See the email address on our web site to get in touch.

OOTP 15 Tips and Tricks:
Differentiating Late-Round Draft Picks

Just like in real life, drafting in OOTP can be daunting. Sure, it's easy in the first couple rounds, when you can find plenty of guys with big league potential, but in the later rounds, it's tempting to let the AI auto-complete the draft.

Here's a trick to make the draft more interesting, courtesy of BIG17EASY on our forum: "After the first 3 or 4 rounds, change the relative ratings to Triple-A, and then after another 3 or 4 rounds, change them to Double-A, and so on. That will help you differentiate between the players. At least for me, that makes it feel like if I find a guy with high minor league potential and good work ethic, maybe there's a chance he'll exceed those expectations and make it to the big leagues," BIG17EASY says. Users can enable the new relative ratings system of OOTP in the game setup, 'Global' tab, 'Player ratings' section.

Have fun with OOTP 15 and enjoy the All-Star Game!
