Game Problem

Technical HowTo

Technical Problem

The game cannot be started, computer freezes up or crashes

Please check first that you have DirectX installed. DirectX9 is recommended. You'll get it at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/.

If your game runs with DirectX 8.1, it's OK, but if not, install the latest version please.

The second possible solution is to start the game without using the Direct3D hardware mode. You can do this by using the icon named "Start TB without 3D hardware". The game will have no transparency effects, and the graphics will probably be slow. If this helped you to start the game, and you want to be able to start it in full hardware-supported D3D mode, you will need another graphic card, or probably just an updated driver for your card.

I want to install the game on 2 computers, at home and in the office :) Is this possible?

You've got two licenses for your personal use on up to 2 computers at the same time.

My laptop doesn't have access to the internet, how can I install the game?

Order it on CD in our webstore, or just download it and burn it on a CD. Then install it on the laptop. Start it and click on "Off-Line Installation" in the Purchase Screen. Follow the dialog.
If you don't have access to any computer connected to the internet, call Viatech, they will help you to get and to install a license through the phone.

Game just won't start after Installation

If nothing happens when you start the programm after the installation, it's surely NO graphic error like missing DirectX or something. There should at least come an error message or the purchase screen. If not, this might help you:

First check whether you're having an internet connection. Open your browser, and open any website. Works? Great. Now close all programs which might use the internet: streaming audio/video, email client, browser, online games and so on. Does TB start now? Yes? Fine, that's it. If not, probably the eLicense control is disabled on your PC.

Do the following to enable it again:

- Open the Windows Start menu, and click on Run
- Type msconfig and press the Enter key
- Once that pops up, click on the Services tab
- Scroll down and find the Service tab licctrl
- Make sure there is a check mark by that box!
- Click apply, and restart your computer

Another issue which has been reported is that the game will work after any other software which uses DirectX has been started and closed again.

Game crashes during runtime

If the game crashes during playing, the reason might be the RAM. It's possible to schedule 999 bouts. Each bout is an object using a little bit of that RAM. Each bout contains other objects: fighters, cornermen and so on... So when you're running the game on a computer with 128 MB RAM, you should be careful with high numbers of bouts.

Generally, when a program crashes, restart the PC, and don't start any other program. Then test the game again. Probably it's not compatible with a specific other program which you're using.

When the scheduler or tournament or whatever is closed again, all the used RAM will be set free again. So you can start the scheduler and close it again a hundred times, it won't flood your RAM. But if you schedule 1000 bouts, and are running other big programs at the same time, it might be too much for your computer. As mentioned above: Close all other programs. Don't schedule a high number of bouts. Or purchase RAM :-)

Games always started fine, but now it crashes during starting

Probably your TB database is damaged! This can happen when the computer crashes or is switched off for any reason during playing. You need to use a new database. There are two ways to do this:

- Re-Install the game. This is the easiest way, but you will loose all your TB data which you probably created meanwhile, and if the reason for the crash wasn't the database, you lost it for nothing.

- Create a new database:
Locate the file config.ini in your Title Bout program folder.
Double click on it to open it and locate the line which starts with Database=
Change the name behind the = to any new name like this:
Database=NEWDB1

Save and close the file, and restart the game. The new database will be created based on the "Default" database, which is never used itself by the program.

eLicense FAQ and Troubleshooting

eLicense makes it possible to purchase a game and to pay using the credit card, or using money order, licensing the game online or manually through telephone or email and much more. It is in use on many, many computers with OOTP and TBCB and a lot of other products. Though it's easy to use, you might have some questions, for example regarding the un-licensing procedure which you have to go before you give your computer away or before you re-install your Windows.

A lot of information is available at Viatech's eLicense support page at http://www.elicense.com/usersupport/el_faq.htm

In case of problems with the eLicense, please contact Viatech using their support form at http://www.elicense.com/usersupport/supportreq.htm

How to switch off the sound

If you're still having problems to run the game, it's a good idea to switch off the sound just to make sure whether this is the reason or not. If you can start the game, just toggle the three settings regarding the sound in the Game Options screen.

If you cannot start the game, open the config.ini file, which is located in the TB program folder. Find the three lines with the sound settings and edit them to get this:

PlayMusic=0
PlayCrowdNoises=0
PlayAnySounds=0

Save and close the file, then start the game.

End Unnecessary Background Tasks

Processes take up resources such as memory and processing power. One of the most common reasons for a game to crash, have slow performance, or just not start are processes running in the background, also known as background tasks. You should be logged in with an account that has administrator privileges to perform these steps. WARNING: Do NOT End Process on explorer.exe or processes with "SYSTEM" or "SERVICE" in the username. Ending these processes may prevent Windows from running correctly. Also, ending another user's process will cause all of their open programs to close, which may result in a loss of all unsaved work.

User Switching in Windows XP

One of the features of Windows XP is the ability to switch users while leaving all your programs open and running. This will take up resources such as memory, processing power and possibly network resources that the game may need. This may cause games to have poor performance, crash, or just not start correctly. If you are logged in as an account with Administrator privileges, you can logoff other users.

Update your Drivers

It is recommended to check with your hardware manufacturer to make sure you have the latest and most compatible drivers installed on your system. As far as games are concerned, the drivers for your video card and sound card are two of the most important.

Use Windows Update

Microsoft will often release updates to improve the performance and compatibility of Windows along with various other items. Open www.windowsupdate.com in your browser and follow the instructions that appear closely.

Make Sure Your Version of DirectX is Up To Date

The latest version of Microsoft's DirectX is always available at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/. Make sure it meets the system requirements for this game.

Run ScanDisk and Defrag

ScanDisk is a Windows utility that will check the files and folders in your computer for any errors such as lost clusters, incorrect file size and cross-linked files. Defrag searches your drive(s) for fragmented files which can cause slow performance and an increase in the chance of disk errors.

Enable Virtual Memory

Windows has the ability to use virtual memory. If a program's memory needs exceed how much free physical RAM you have, it will use Virtual Memory. Virtual memory also goes by the names Disk Cache and Swap File. Virtual memory is created on the hard drive and takes up space. Since it is on the hard drive, it will take longer to load than physical RAM. A game can use between 50 MB and 300 MB of virtual memory. You will need this much free space on your hard drive so that the program can run correctly. If you don't have enough virtual memory space, a game can run slowly, or not run at all.

I'm using two computers and want to transfer my universe back and forth. Which files shall I copy?

Most important is the fighters.dat, but you'll also need the history.dat.

If you edited any fighter's biography, you'll need to copy the files in the folder \Data\myDB\FightersBiography\ Same for venue history: the name of that folder is \Data\myDB\VenuesHistory.

And if you want to take the current settings with you, you'll need to copy the config.ini file.

And you'll need the saved bouts from the \Bouts\History\ folder if you want to look into a bout log.

We were using GUIDs in the whole program. Also for naming the files, for example {0254DA49-476D-4E02-881B-A61FE3A4B62D}.html. These names are unique on one computer, and even unique world wide if you're having a network card built in in that computer. SO, if you don't want to copy the bout history files from computer to computer each time, it doesn't matter, you can do it anytime later without overwriting anything.

How do I transfer the TBCB software over to a new computer?

You need to "Unlicense" the game to "upload" your license from your old computer to the eLicense server. To do so, go to the Windows System Control Panel, open "eLicense Control", right click on the game, and choose "Unlicense". Then follow the dialog. On the new computer, install the game using the setup file, copy the saved game files from your old PC over the installed files if you want to, and then start the game. On the Purchase Screen, click on "License" to enter your order ID. Then the license will be "downloaded" from the eLicense server and you're ready to play again. The link to boxrec.com doesn't work in TB anymore

Probably boxrec.com changed the "address" (URL) of the fighter pages. Each fighter's page has an URL which is for example http://www.boxrec.com/record043884.html for Victorio Abadia's record. When the URL changes, an adjustment needs to be made to the settings in TB.
TB has an "open interface" to boxrec.com and each TB user can make the adjustment himself. Do the following please:

- Open the Game Options screen in TB
- Locate the field named "External data source link"
- Enter this:

http://www.boxrec.com/record$$ID$$.html

Click on Save, and that's it.
If this URL doesn't work, open a fighter record page at boxrec.com and have a look into the address bar of your browser. There you will find the URL. Copy/Paste it (Ctrl+C/Ctrl-V) into the text box in TB. Then replace the six digits representing the boxer's boxrec.com ID with $$ID$$.
