BZ 1536: Incomplete backup

I don't think my league is backing up correctly.

I am playing the ABA Quickstart, just a week into the season. I moved the game folder back and forth from home over the weekend, and upon restoring the backup I had made (via the in-game backup function) yesterday, found it was far from complete.

So I ditched the backup folder and tried to make a new one. The new backup is 18 MB in size; original league is 74.4 MB.

This can't be right.

The in-game backup only backs up the .dat files, not any of the text directories.

If you want to move games between computers, it's best to copy the entire .lg directory.

So if everything were to go kablooey, you wouldn't be able to get your entire league back intact, just the way it was, even if you used the in-game backup function religiously?

That's not much of a backup function. I'll take your suggestion and copy the entire .lg directory instead (and keep copies in a couple different places while I'm at it).

Hmm... actually the in-game backup does back up everything (this must have got past me in beta)

I've just backuped the ABA quickstart and the backup is the same size as the original league.

I noticed that if I delete the backup and try again, I still get the incremental backup message (i.e. that x number of files had changed since the last backup).

Maybe there's some logfile that keeps track of what's been backed up when, that I need to delete along with the backup .lg folder in order to start fresh.

I've just tried it with the patched version, and same result as before. Here's what I did:

1) Played at least one game since last saving or backing up

2) Opened "backups" directory in Windows and deleted .lg folder

3) Emptied Recycle Bin

4) Executed "Save Game" command

5) Executed "Make Backup" command

6) Got message reporting:
"Successfully updated the database backup.
"Total number of files: 3439
"Number of changed or new files: 165"

7) Backup .lg folder is 21.0 MB. Original .lg folder is 76.1 MB.

8) Comparing original and backup shows that:

a) description.txt exists in original but not in backup
b) "ballcaps" directory has 84 files in original, is empty in backup
c) "import_export" and "temp" directories are empty for both
d) "jerseys" directoy has 139 files in original, is empty in backup
e) "messages" folder contains 54 files in original, but just 3 (the most recent) in backup
f) "page_links" and "settings" folders have identical contents (2 and 1 files respectively)
g) "replays" folder contains 9 files in original, but just 1 (the most recent) in backup

The "news" folder is similar to e) and g) above--I can go into detail if needed, but there's a lot of subfolders containing a whole lot of files there.

The backup saves all files, but incrementally. It saves the file date of the "youngest" saved file in the database (world.dat) - and that's the problem. I need to add a button to the backup dialog like "Force save all files". BZ 1536

The problem I'm getting with the "backup game" function is that it's backing up everything, not just the .dats. With HTML and images and everything, my backups are 5 GB or larger.

This issue was claimed fixed for the upcoming patch. If you still have trouble with this matter after patching, please post a link to this thread along with a detailed explanation of what happened and we will re-open this report. Thanks.
