Pitcher stamina/Recommended MLB role
Here's one thing I haven't quite grasped in this game. There seems to be a lot of arbitrary labeling of pitchers in this game by the CPU. Even in the draft pool, lots of guys with low stamina listed as SPs and high stamina guys as MR or even closers.
For example, drafted a guy listed as MR yet he had a 100 stamina rating. Recommended MLB role: middle relief. HUH? I can't say that I've paid much attention to this, but do stamina ratings change up or down as a player develops? I've also noticed that when you ask the manager to fill out your pitching rotation, he chooses low stamina guys and reassigns them as SPs and takes MR guys and makes them starters. I guess I never understood the game logic in that regard, especially the recommended MLB role on the players profile. It almost never fits with what their ratings indicate. |

One thing to look at is how many types of pitches the guy can throw. If he only has 2 quality pitches the computer is more likely to put him in the bullpen regardless of stamina. For the most part that is how it is in real life.

Good point. I hadn't really considered that. At the same time, I can recall a few SPs who only really threw 2 pitches most of the time. i.e. Randy Johnson's Fastball/Slider. But, if a guy throws 4-5 different pitches, but only has 20s stamina, does he develop more stamina over time? I haven't really noticed that. I know in real baseball guys develop a starter/reliever routine but I can't say I've seen the same in this game.

Also on the topic of stamina - I had a problem develop in OOTP 12 and now again in OOTP 13 where somehow the stamina of starting pitchers in historical play is routinely 17 or higher, resulting in stats where a guy like Aaron Sele of the 2000 Mariners, for example, had 14 complete games. Everyone else in the rotation had a stamina of 17 or higher and also had a bunch of complete games. I adjust the strategy settings to try and compensate, but they keep throwing 150+ pitches in a game and get complete games all the time. HELP!!! This is so absurd.
The strategy settings by the way are also completely out of whack. Most recent example - 1998 Dodgers - for innings 7 & 8, trailing by 2 runs - the default strategy setting for hooking starting pitchers is all the way to the right on SLOW. Come on, now... I find this on every team in every year I've tried so far. I don't get it nor do I get how to change it. Last edited by bjenglert77; 04-08-2012 at 02:25 AM. |

Stuff (and repertoire) is and should be much more important when it comes to determining starting pitchers than stamina. The way to look at stamina is that if this guy has good stuff and high stamina he is a horse, while if he has good stuff and lower stamina he is a more fragile guy whose pitch count needs to be watched (i.e Pedro Martinez).

often in the lower levels, usually rookie and S A lvl the ai managers will put 2 pitch pitchers with high stamina in to the rotation. In this case if he is smart works and both you and him prey to the right deities he might just learn a 3rd pitch.

Does anyone else have starting pitchers in historical leagues with jacked up stamina? I'm trying to play seasons in the 90's and 2000's and 3 or 4 out of 5 starting pitchers on each staff have stamina of 17 or higher. And the strategy settings are weird too so that starting pitchers never get yanked. Anybody, anybody? Bueller?
