The Beantown Bambino: An alternate History
Hello all!
I have no Idea if this has been done here, and it really doesn’t matter. Don’t expect extravagant articles about this dynasty as I got a c- in creative writing in school. But I fully intend to have fun with this, my 1st OOTP Dynasty! The settings are pretty much out of the box, I imported Baseball History up to the start date. Initiated the OOTP development system. I changed the ratings to 1-100. Checked the rating boxes. . That’s all the changes I made. Now onto the Dynasty. ![]() Will The “Babe” Make a new and better history? This is an alternate Dynasty of “What If” Did you ever wonder what would have happened if the Red Sox kept Babe Ruth? Even more Bizzare if he’d stayed a Pitcher his whole Career? This Dynasty will begin in a very crucial year in the Babe’s career 1918. IRL in 1918 Ruth had arguably the most impressive single year in Baseball History. Not only did he pitch in 20 games with 19 starts getting 18 CG, 166.1 IP with a 2.22 ERA and a 13-7 record BUT he played 59 games in the OF hitting .300 with a league leading 11 HR’s, 66 RBI and .555 SLG in only 317 AB’s also scoring 50 runs,58 walks and a .411 OBP. ![]() Ruth will not only be in the new 5 man rotation ![]() But he’ll be in leftfield Think about this fact, let it sink in. In 1916 Babe Ruth led the League in ERA, GS and SHO. In 1917 he led the League in CG, In 1918 he played both Pitcher and Left field and did it very well. He then went on to become one of the greatest offensive forces Baseball has ever known! Is there really any debate about who was and IS the greatest Player to ever step on the field? I think not! In this world Ruth starts playing both Pitcher and Left Fielder in 1918 and continues his double Duty for the Rex Sox throughout his career! And most importantly he STAYS in BOSTON! It will take total hands on approach to pull this off which will include playing out each and every game to get the most possible production from “The Sultan of Swat and Strikes” while keeping him off the Disabled list. Our Primary goal is to win World Series with a secondary goal of getting the most production from the Greatest Player ever to play. And hopefully get him an award or two along the way! Ruth's 1918 stats are HERE Ruth's 1919 Stats are HERE Ruth's 1920 Stats are HERE To be continued…… Last edited by Painmantle; 05-17-2013 at 07:49 PM. |

January 1918
Hack Wilson seems to be a hot commodity and is being put on the untouchable list! Jan 1st-Jan 15th We’ve received 5 trade proposals in the first 2 weeks, Cleveland has made us 3 different offers that involve 27yr old SS Al Halt for 24 year old Hack Miller, a promising Left Fielder, and another player on our roster. The most laughable offer included 1B Dick Hobilzell…we wouldn’t trade Miller for Halt even up so all offers were rejected. Pittsburgh offered 40yr old SS Tommy Leach for the same pair of players , a very laughable offer. In other news: Chicago MR Roy G Sanders fell down a flight of stairs and dislocated his sholder and will be out for 2 months. Jan 16-31: Boston Braves made 3 different pitches for Hack Wilson, St Louis Browns and Cleveland also made one and Washington tried to entice us into dealing them Hoblitzell. Brooklyn sent LF Jimmy Johnston to the Browns for CF Earl L Smith Saturday, January 12th, 1918 Pittsburgh Pirates: MR Roy G Sanders was injured . The Diagnosis: dislocated shoulder, bruised ribs, lacerated finger. He's expected to miss about 2-3 months. (fell down some stairs) January Transactions: |

With Hack Miller “untouchable” only one offer came in,it was a lame offer for 1B Dick Hoblitzell and was rejected. Only one transaction this month: As Pittsburgh makes another deal sending 30yr old C Walter Schmidt to the Phillies for 28yr old MR Milt Watson. Let’s have a look at how the Bambinos ratings got rolled for this Dynasty: |

March 1918
March 1st –March 15th
On March 12th, 4 days before the beginning of spring training the Boston Braves offered us SS Zeb Terry (26yr old) for 3B George Cochran (29yr old). A deal we accepted for a few reasons. First: we have only one SS on our roster (someone who actually has a rating at SS) and we have 3 players who can play 3rd. Secondly: Cochran wasn’t scheduled to be a starter. Third:Zeb is a little younger with more of an upside than Cochran. We lose some speed with this deal we gain enough to make it. And from a roster standpoint it makes perfect sense. Cleveland LF Bob Bescher came to camp in shape much to the suprise of his peers! Just 3 transactions this short month: |

1918 Spring Training Game 1
Lack Luster Performance in the first Spring game by Ruth. He did manage 3 walks and a steal. And logged a couple innings in relief. Tomorrow is another day! ![]() Last edited by Painmantle; 03-19-2013 at 06:14 PM. |

1918 Spring Training Game 2
Game 2 of the preseason was against the White Sox. Ruth started and after pitching 2 innings in relief the day before, I set his limits to 75 pitches or five innings which ever came 1st. Just when I thought Babe was gonna finish his 5 innings he leaves the game after 4.1IP and 64 pitches with a sore wristLuckily he is day-to-day. (Note to self: Never EVER pitch Babe Ruth 2 days in a row again) Hack Wilson is also injured and hasn’t been diagnosed yet! . The winning runs were produced by a Harry Hooper error (One of our best fielding OF)

1918 Spring Training Game 3
Game 3 is against the St Louis Browns, With Wilson OUT and Ruth Day-to-day our OF pickings were slim. Pitcher Walt Kinney has a rating in LF/RF but we didn’t need him and it’s a good thing as he’s no Ruth with the bat. Babe was used in the 6th inning as a Pinch Hitter when the bases got loaded and reached on an error, then he was quickly removed for obvious reasons. But he got a good show from the on deck circle as right before his at bat we had a “Streaker” delay the game with his bare assed silly knee’s bent running around behavior .Boston drops to 0-3 in Spring action with their second consecutive 1 run loss!
We also received news that Hack Miller will be out for 6 weeks and with our outfield pretty shallow due to Ruth’s playing both ways it’s time to shop for a bench player. We’ve decided to shop our oldest player 37 yr old 2B Hennie Wagner, while Hennie is not much with the bat ha has all green in the running department and should bring in some offers. Only one OF offered, CF Pete Johns from the St Louis Browns all I can say about him is his range is good and he doesn’t K much so looks like a perfect necessity trade and it’s a done deal! |

1918 Spring Training Game 4
Game 4 of Spring Training saw The Red Sox get their first win 8-2 over the Tigers; Ruth was 1-2 with 3 walks, a triple, a run and 3 steals. I’ve notice that a lot of teams pitch around him when first base is empty…Imagine that! Newly acquired Pete Johns has Joined Boston’s active roster and will see action in game 5 at the Philly A’s. Frank Truesdale got his first hit of the spring in this one a bases clearing double in the 8th.
Around the league, Cincinnati and the ChiSox are both 4-0. Senators CF Clyde Milan is 9-16 so far. ChiSox Pitcher Frank Shellenback has 3 appearances, 11.1 innings and has yet to allow a run. |

Game 5 of Spring training
Yet another loss to drop The Sox to 1-4 in spring. It’s pretty fun playing out the spring games as it allows me to really get to know the team and players on my roster. Ruth was 0-2 this game with 3 walks a run and a SB. If he comes to the plate with first base free and runners on it’s almost a guaranteed walk. He’s only hitting .222 right now so I expect some good things soon enough from him! Spring News Reds and Chisox are still undefeated (5-0), A’s and Cubs both put 2B on the 15-day DL today. Chi Sox Pitcher Shellenback throws 2.1 more scoreless innings. Reds pitcher Mike Regan has 4 appearances, 8.2IP and 3 saves in the 5 reds games. ![]() ![]() Next up is Cleveland and Tris Speaker, who is hitting .400 this spring |

1918 Spring Training Game 6
Game 6 saw Ruth finally go yard! A game tying solo shot in the 4th inning to counter Tris Speakers manufactured run in the 1st inning after he reached on a fielder’s choice, stole 2nd second and scored on a short single to left Ruth just didn’t have the gun to get the speedy Speaker. But once again Sox Relief Pitching can’t hang In Other News Reds and White Sox keep rolling, both are 6-0. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here are today’s scores ![]() Next up Frank “Home Run” Baker, Wally Pipp and the Hated Yankee’s!

1918 Spring Training Game 7
![]() Frank "Home Run" Baker led an assault on Boston and Babe Ruth with a Homer and a Triple. Ruth was horrible in his 2nd spring start allowing 7ER in 6 IP and giving up 8 hits while walking 5, throwing 3 wild Pitches and hitting a batter! ![]() ![]() Shellenback has yet to give up a run in 17.2 IP ![]() ![]() |

1918 Spring Training Game 8
Ruth Takes a day off and the Boston bats go wild! ![]() ![]() George Whiteman played in LF while Ruth took a day off and had 4 RBI but was injured running out a bases loaded triple! He’ll miss 3 weeks with a strained oblique. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Up Next we play the only undefeated team left in Spring Season, The Chicago White Sox (8-0) sporting one of the best lineups ever with Chick Gandil, Buck Weaver, Eddie Collins and “Shoeless Joe” Jackson..The White Sox will have Lefty Williams on the Hill. Should be interesting! |

1918 Spring Training Game 9
![]() Happy Felsch "Stole" The Game The White Sox showed why they are 9-0 so far, savvy play, impeccable base running and good defense were the key in a 3-0 win over Boston today! Happy Felsch hit the first pitch of the bottom of the first for a double, stole third and then scored on a Sac-Fly. In the 3rd inning Felsch with a single, stole 2nd,stole 3rd then scored on a 2 out single by Eddie Murphy. In the 8th we walk the bases loaded with one out, then with 2 outs we hit their #8 Batter with a pitch to force in a run. Manufacturing runs is Chicago’s speciality and it was showcased in this game! ![]() ![]() Shellenback now has 20.1 scorless spring innings ![]() |

Red Sox Make an offer for a Bat to protect Ruth!
Boston has offered a player for player swap to the Philadelphia Athletics to exchange Center Fielders in an attempt to get another Power Bat to Protect Babe Ruth in the lineup The offer is Amos Strunk for Tillie Walker. Athletics GM Jose Lopez is mulling over the deal and we won’t know the answer until tomorrow at the earliest. Here is a Player comparison: Strunk is on the left/Walker on the right ![]() But First things First as Ty Cobb and his Detroit Tigers come to town. Combine that with Tiger Ace Hooks Dauss being on the mound it looks like The Sox and Baseball fans are in for a whale of a game today! ![]() |

It would be curious to see how he'll performed as a dual (LF/P) role ... If having him on my team, I may be tempted in sitting him out day before his pitching ... but hey, they were more durable than today players but not equivalent in conditioning and finesse ...
BTW, nice spread you have here ... easier to read and all ... looking forward to this dynasty ... Tomas ![]()

1918 Spring Training Game 11
Boston won consecutive games for the first time this spring beating Ty Cobb and his Detroit Tigers 5-3, but this victory came at a grave cost as Babe Ruth strained a hamstring catching a line drive off the bat of Harry Heilman in the 4th inning. Diagnosis is: ![]() ![]() Adding insult to injury not only are every one of our LF’s injured right now, but our offer has been declined. And getting Tillie Walker is now a priority so looks like we’ll have to add a player. We have 3 catchers so it looks like Agnew is the most expendable. ![]() ![]() Boston will be working with a makeshift OF for most of the month of April, This is a situation I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy! Up Next the Ruth'less Sox take on the A's, Who will play LF? Only time will tell!
