1956 Topps Baseball Card (sort of)

Well, I'm not entirely happy with the way this turned out, but right now I'm a bit stuck as to whether or not it can really be improved upon, so I'm not going to continue working on it. As such, I'm just going to go ahead and throw it out there for people to use if they like, and if anyone can figure out how to fix the border (I suppose you can go ahead and just remove it if you like), then maybe I'll do the card back someday. In the meantime, here are the files.

Get files here: 1956 Topps

Sample:

There are 10 different backgrounds that will show up behind the player.

I think you're being a bit rough on yourself, they look great to me. Wish they had backs, though!

The issue is that the border around the player disappears completely in areas where the FaceGen is black. I see it the most with very dark or black caps, which end up having no border around them even though there's a border around the face and shoulders. It looks incomplete.

How's it look without the border? Not as historically accurate, I know, but just curious.

Since I'm progressing to the 1956-57 season in my Braeland dynasty, I want to use this 1956 Topps template originally created by fhomess. So I went ahead and completed the back and added some simple award images that I've used on other card sets. I'm adding a link here should anyone want to use it as well.

Thanks to fhomess for creating the basic template!

Zip file Link: 1956 Topps - v2.0

7zip Link: 1956 Topps - v2.1

Hi The Game - sorry about that. It's been downloaded 13 times today, or so it says on MediaFire, but I'm having trouble downloading it just now as well. I tested a couple of my other files and they downloaded no problem, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with this one.

I've created a 7zip file to download and added it to my original post. It's exactly the same set as the v2.0 file, just in a different compressed file format. Here it is again so you don't have to go back up to find it:

1956 Topps-v2.1

I've tested this link and it appears to work just fine.

Here is a direct link to the zipfile as well, which I didn't know I could attach:
Attached Files
File Type: zip 1956_Topps_v2.0.zip (2.90 MB, 41 views)

Updated the repository. I also updated the first post with a direct link to the repository, so anyone seeing that can get the latest version.

Thanks for finishing these up!

Thanks fhomess. I felt a little hesitant at first as I didn't want to step on you toes (and appear that I was taking this set over), but since I was going to do it anyway for my personal use, I thought I would share it.

And I played around with the white background behind the player image but couldn't get it work properly, so I eliminated it.

Regarding you excellent template instructions, I have a question on the naming convention. I understand the need to give unique names to the xml files so that there's no overlapping with other sets. But I was under the impression that in order for OOTP to automatically generate cards (such as the all star cards for example), the xml file needs to be rendered as "all_star", not "1987_topps_all_star". Is that correct?

So the user would have to rename them before using them in their current game if I'm understanding this correctly (which is what I gather from the "Template Documentation" section of your template page).

You are correct, but the easiest way to install is to unzip into the folder and then adjust for the files you want. I like having the year/manufacturer at the start of the file name because it's easy to group things together that way when sorting by filename. However, see below...

Yes, they do, but they have to do something either way. Typically, that requirement is to go and backup the original files so they're not lost. With this approach, they won't automatically overwrite anything, and they can then clearly see what's new and make adjustments that way.

All that said, I've updated the naming recommendation as I realized that OOTP's year-by-year update algorithm is looking for files in a different name format. If you name it with <template>_<year(s)>.xml, the game will pick up the file for the year in question. The new recommendation will maintain the ability to not overwrite what you've already got in place and still accommodate the year-by-year updates. All a user would need to do is adjust the year(s) they want the card to apply to.

I ran a quick test, and while the instructions suggest you need to name the card <template>_<year(s)>.xml, if you name it <template>_<year>_<manufacturer>.xml, it'll still pick up the card for that year. So you don't even need to remove stuff after the year.

FWIW, another test suggests that if you have multiple templates for a given year, it'll use the first one, alphabetically.

Thanks fhomess! I wonder how this would work with oddball leagues such as mine that start in one calendar year and end in another. Perhaps that's what the multiple years are for? (i.e.. <template>_<year(s)>.xml)

At any rate, I just checked my league and even though the awards were handed out in April 1956, the year generated in the various texts of the xml files is 1955, so I guess it works for overlapping years.

I think OOTP has a concept of season year. I'm not sure if that's typically the year that it starts in or the year it ends in for leagues that cross the calendar, but I suspect it's the start year. I would assume that the card template chosen matches the season year.

The multiple year option (e.g. default_1901-1902.xml) is to allow the same template to be used multiple seasons in a row without having to duplicate the template for each year in the span.
