They could hand out pumpkin pie and a bobble head doll of Alcee Hasting to every paying customer and they still will have a ton of empty seats. South Florida loves Spring baseball, but it's not a Major League area.

You being a Cleveland fan should know that all the Marlins need to fill the seats is a good team. And with a new stadium, they should be able to afford to spend some money.

They should have graphically added the marlins playing in there to give it a more realistic feel

They've had good teams, and scrapped them every time because they couldn't afford them.

I think the biggest problem will be solved with the new stadium: the heat. I've only been to Miami a couple of times, but I know that summers can be miserable. Having a retractable roof will almost double the number of fans that show up (so they might top 10,000!).

Which is precisely why they'd want a new stadium. A new, up-to-date stadium generates much more revenue than an older stadium. The Marlins' current park was openend in 1987.

Interesting.

You've got the "we've got an MLB team" expansion rush in the early going, and respectable numbers even in the immediate post-strike era, and then good crowds for the 1997 champs. The Marlins have never really recovered from that crass 1998 fire sale. The trend up after the surprising 2003 championship was quickly erased by yet another movement towards rebuilding.

Frankly, I think the 'Spring Training' reputation that is tagged on Florida's fan base is unfair. It is a lot like the popular myth that Montreal had no dedicated fan base (the Expos drew plenty of fans when they were competitive and MLB wasn't threatening to execute or move them.) There is a legit fan base in South Florida/Miami so long as the Marlins don't do everything in their power to alienate it (as they and MLB have done for the better part of a decade.)

This new stadium should help. We'll see. On one hand there is the revenue windfall in the short term. On the other, and perhaps more importantly, there is the promise of stability that has been lacking in Miami for years. As long as the Marlins play in good faith (and try to build and actually maintain a contender) they'll draw fans.

Marlins are about 4,000 to 8,000 fans a game. If they are lucky...I went to four of them, but thats because they played my SF Giants! Besides that I wouldnt go...weather sucks in the summer, there just not that good to me, and their fans are arogant assh*les. I havent been to one game in 5 years (Giants play 4 games every year in florida) so it 20 games Ive seen 15 fans get thrown out for random stupid things. Id rather drive 4 hours and go to the rays tropicanna or there new stadium in 2012 which is 1 mile east of the trop on the edge on the tampa bay harbor.

PS - For who cares. How many teams will have a new stadium in the future? Marlins (2012), Devil Rays (2012), San Francisco 49ers (in Santa Clara, CA 2014), New York Jets (2012), Dallas Cowboys (2010), Minnesota Golden Gophers Football (Sept 12, 2010), Oregon State Baseball, couple cities for soccer. Those were just some I have known.

Maybe if they kept the same team around for more than one year. They should have a great fan base for the success they have had. It is hard when you go from a championship team to a AAA team.

The official attendance figures cite paid attendance, not how many show up at the ballpark. And paid attendance is what really matters, since that's money in the bank for the club, whether or not the ticket holder shows up (though, of course, if they show up, additional revenue can be had via concessions sales).

Through Aug. 1st, 2009, Florida's attendance is actually ahead of what it was at this point last year. In 2008, after 54 home games, the Marlins' per game average was 15,497; in 2009, it's 17,965. That's an improvement of 16%.

this is key. by not having any players for a long term, fans feel detached from the team. they are afraid of becoming attached to any one player, or even a group of players, because they never know when the team will trade them away for more prospects. having some continuity within the roster will help keep the fans coming out for more

The new Cowboys Stadium opens this Fall (2009).

The City of San Jose has a stadium proposal all ready to go for the A's. It is a matter of taking away territorial rights from the Giants. The proposal is rock solid, in that it pretty much highlights San Jose as the largest city in the region and that the territorial rights unfairly keep it from having a team of its own.

Of course, if the Niners move to Santa Clara, will they still be called the San Francisco 49ers? Or, will they go with San Jose 49ers?

Santa Clara is a city in the south part of the bay, from what I remember. Thats where there training facilties are. So it will still be called San Francisco 49ers with there 937 million dollar stadium...stepping up there with them Yankees!!! Will have some sort of strip mall on one sideline on the outside. Also about 12,000 SQ FT off office spaces behind the seats in the north endzone. So they can make extra revenue for both the niners, city of san francisco, and the state of california. This and the strip mall is the big reason why this is going down. only two entrances from the southwest and northwest side...you walk up into the stadium. The largest bowl stadium to be made. Post to hold around 68,500 or so people and will accomandate roughly 78,000 for super bowl in 2012!!!! Be the biggest crowd in History. Solar panels and a 27,000 sq feet of plants over the west wall to help cool the press boxes and luxury boxes. Apparently will help with the AC and wasting eletricity....not sure myself

I didnt know the twins and golden gophers...stupid site i looked at dated it wrong too.
