Looks like the Marlins are trying to lock up that wildcard race in the NL....I hope they can make the playoffs

They gave up two prospects for one months of a $4.25mil .290/.338/.460 1B-3B-LF-RF, while they could have a whole year of a $2mil .282/.355/.487 1B-3B-LF-RF.

And they are gonna rework Conine's contract through 2005?!? He's really old. Isn't Derek Lee better, much younger, and about the same price? Or one Hollandsworth is not enough?

I think Lee is arbitration eligibile after this season. That said, I still don't understand picking up Conine.

Yup, the Marlins are definitely trying to win the wildcard. Unfortunately, they have no idea how to maximize their chances of doing so. Picking up Conine is a negative, not a positive, no matter what they gave up for him.

This is going to sound like a joke, but it is important to have someone like Conine who understands the playoffs, and the push for the wild card. He has been an MVP of an allstar game, he has a world series ring, he knows how to win. He brings leadership other intangibles to his team. Marlins have Talent. But how many players on their roster have world series rings?

You are right, that did sound like a joke.

They have Gerald Williams, who knows what it is like to lose a world series.

Quick trivia: How many players who appeared in the Marlins first ever opening day lineup are still active in the majors?

Without looking it up, I will say, just Jeff Conine, or it could be Conine and Sheffield.

Sheff was not there during their expansion season. Conine is one, Benito Santiago is another. Im not sure about others.

Eagle Eye, Gary Sheffield was in Florida during their Expansion year, but he didn't start with the team. That year he started with San Diego, so I will say that Sheffield was not one of the correct answers. I had to go look and see when he came to the team.

I think EagleEye 0 got it. Since it's opening day lineup not opening day roster. Otherwise there might be some others. Chris Hammond? Trevor Hoffman? Dave Weathers?

So Conine and Santiago. Wow, Marlins need to stage a reunion.

They could have brought in Doug Glanville but his greatness was probably unavailable.
