Out of the Park Baseball ("OOTP") is the most sophisticated baseball simulation game on the market. The series has improved continuously since its inception in 1999, winning countless awards along the way, including multiple Sports Game of the Year awards. Now in its 14th incarnation, OOTP offers everything a baseball fan can ask for in a computer baseball game.
One of the strengths of OOTP is that it offers multiple ways to play the game. You can create your league and simply watch it evolve by simulating long periods of time. Maybe you want to act as a general manager and build your franchise via trades, contract negotiations, or through the first-year player draft. Or you can dive deep into managing and call the strategy for every pitch and at-bat from the dugout. And of course, you can tailor all of this to your individual style of play.
There are three different types of leagues you can play in OOTP:
Each version of OOTP comes with a roster set featuring the current season's Major League rosters, including accurately rated real players from the majors right down to the rookie leagues! Take over your favorite baseball franchise and guide it to glory!
You can create your own historical league, based on any real-world season from 1871 through the most recently completed season, without having to purchase additional seasons! You can use historical leagues to "replay" seasons from history, or you can simulate them into the future, with real players entering the league automatically in the correct years. OOTP even automatically adds expansion teams at the appropriate teams. You can create your own alternate baseball history!
OOTP gives you the ability to create your own fictional baseball universe. You choose the league setup, the rules, the schedule, and the desired statistical output. OOTP creates a brand new baseball universe which begs to be discovered. Want a 40-team league with 3 minor league levels in Canada? No problem! A small 8-team independent league with an age-limit located in South Dakota? No problem either. The possibilities are endless; the only limit is your imagination.
But it doesn't stop there! You can combine any of the modes to truly turn your baseball dreams into reality. For example, import the 1927 Yankees and 1969 Orioles into the 2010 Major League and see how The Babe does against Josh Beckett. Or set up a league with the greatest teams from the US and Japan, competing for the ultimate championship. Or import individual historical players into your current fictional league - how would Ty Cobb do in your fictional world? OOTP is truly remarkable when it comes to fulfilling your baseball fantasies.
OOTP is a solo player's dream. You can get sucked into the game for endless hours. But there's no challenge quite as great as trying to fleece another human GM in a trade deadline deal! OOTP supports online leagues, many of which have been running for years now! OOTP also generates a vast quantity of HTML reports that the league commissioner can post online for all to see. See here for a sample of the output that OOTP provides. Come visit our online league forum and see if there are any interesting openings!
No baseball game would be any good without a highly accurate simulation engine. OOTP Developments has created the most advanced and most realistic simulation engine available, incorporating modern statistical analysis and research such as the DIPS theory. The game engine and in-game artificial intelligence form a tandem that produces highly realistic statistical output, both on a micro-level (individual at-bats) and on the macro-level (league-wide statistical totals). OOTP isn't like many console or other baseball games where the league leaders hit 120 home runs, or bat .495!
But this is not the only place where OOTP's realism shines. The player development and aging routines have been carefully designed and improved over the years, resulting in very realistic and believable, yet unpredictable player career curves.
Out of the Park Baseball tracks the most statistics of any sports simulation game on the planet. All the information is available at your fingertips and can be used to evaluate your players and help you to make the right management decisions.
On a player level, OOTP tracks thousands of statistics for each player. How does your shortstop hit in a 2-strike count with the bases loaded? Who led the league in triples in 1972? How many runs did that star free agent center fielder save the past three years compared to league average? It's all there.
On a league level, OOTP keeps a complete history available for you at any time. Which teams scored the most runs in a season? Who won the fielding awards ten years ago? Which franchise has won the most pennants? The game features an entire baseball encyclopedia, whether you're using the Major League roster or your own fictional world!
Out of the Park Baseball puts you in the driver's seat of the franchise of your choice. As the general manager, you're responsible for everything that a real-world GM has to deal with. You assign the scouting budget, make roster moves, sign free agents, offer contract extensions, sign personnel, make trades, handle drafts, and keep an eye on your finances. All modern rules are available, including 40-man rosters, waivers, disabled lists, expanded rosters, and more.
These features let you experience what it is like to be a general manager of a big league team. Do you negotiate a contract extension with your salary-arbitration eligible young star? Will you break the bank to sign a top-of-the-rotation starter in free agency? Will you accept a trade offer for one of your favorite players? Who will you pick first in the first-year player draft, and will he sign for a reasonable bonus? Will you let that aging veteran go to free agency? Will you offer him arbitration so that you get a compensation draft pick if he signs somewhere else? Will you keep that young catcher on the roster after Spring Training, or will you send him through waivers, and risk losing him, because he's out of minor league options?
OOTP is as easy or as complex as you want it to be. All of these rules and options can be disabled or tweaked to your heart's content. It's your game, play it your way!
In addition to your role as a GM, in OOTP you also optionally choose to play out games individually. As the manager, you can call all of the shots from the dugout, including decisions about in-game strategy. You also get control over the baserunners in cricial situation, basically putting you in the role of a base coach as well. You control defensive positioning, such as guarding the corners, or playing in when a bunt is expected. When pitching, you can pitch around hitters, pitch out, try a pickoff, and more. When at bat, you can bunt, execute a hit-and-run, steal a base, and more.
Of course, late in the game it is important to make the right calls as well. When do you warm up your closer? Do you use your best pinch hitter in the 7th inning, or save him for later? Do you make defensive replacements late?
Once your choices have been made, the play unfolds before your eyes with a text play-by-play description and animated ball graphics. There are tens of thousands of individual text lines which present the game almost like a radio broadcast. No graphic could ever replace the power of imagination!
OOTP will truly immerse you into your baseball world. Your game generates a wide variety of news articles and communications on the fly, so expect to hear about it when that slugger pounds four homers in a game, or when you shut out your opponent. Of course, this is also customizable, so write your own game recaps and articles if you wish. They'll be stored in the history of the league!
Players have their own personalities. That veteran reliever you've been using in the 7th innning may let you know he expects to be a closer. Your veteran outfielder may complain that he wants to play for a winner when you're playing .400 ball in August. Players in OOTP are not just numbers - they are baseball players who will make you feel like you're a manager of a real baseball team!
On top of that, OOTP features the FaceGen engine, which creates player photos for your fictional players on the fly! These fictional faces change as they age, and when their moods change. Their caps and jerseys change as well when players switch teams.
All of this information sounds overwhelming at first, but the sophisticated user interface of OOTP will never leave you in the dark. Interactive help is available on every screen, and we have video tutorials as well. There is also a searchable online manual that is second-to-none in the gaming world in its thoroughness!
Above all, OOTP is highly customizable. You have great flexibility in how you want your baseball experience to play out, and our OOTP community has created many custom modifications (logos, player photos, special roster sets, player jerseys and ballcaps, etc.) that will amaze you can make your baseball experience that much more enjoyable!
